Not for those easily offended, but I couldn't stop laughing for the three hours.

The Great Beauty is also a very fine film. I liked The Iceman, too, but it's not for everybody.
Re: Best Movies of 2013
I saw most of those. I am sad to say that if I did not go to a single movie this year I am not certain that my life would be any less well off. The quality just seems to get worse. I saw Wolf of Wall Street. I am no prude and have been in plenty of locker rooms. But the cursing and sex, it just bothered me. I am close to not bothering anymore, maybe getting Showtime or HBO and being done with it. What a shame.

Not award-winning material, but I would also add The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, World War Z, and perhaps Blackfish to the list. At least to my best movies list.

I saw Gravity, one of the top movie according to the critics. I just do not understand, for sure it must be me. My take: superb photography, but silly (understatement!) plot.

My Little Pony: Equestria Girls
Re: Best Movies of 2013
I also liked any movie with a 2, e.g., Despicable Me 2 and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.

I agree. I guess I know too much about orbital mechanics. The effects were great and the movie was entertaining enough, but a bit over dramatic and ridiculous. I don't see the whole "one of the best movies of the year" in this one.I saw Gravity, one of the top movie according to the critics. I just do not understand, for sure it must be me. Best movie - Saving Mr. Banks - a movie about a movie about a book.
I predict Christian Bale will get the Oscar for Best Actor in American Hustle.

The "effects" included numerous (and obvious) views of Sandra Bullock's legs. Either she has surprisingly great legs or Gravity deserves an Oscar for "special" effects!NeedToRetire wrote:I agree. I think "Lone Survivor" is pretty good, it came out last month. It is rolling out nation wide today.

I agree it was too much. I felt like the sex scenes didn't add much to the movie. Yes we get it. There was lots of hookers.
The movie was a bit long due to all those unneeded.
Re: Best Movies of 2013
wow, turns out I saw none of those and intend to watch none of them.
I do have
The Wolverine
Despicable Me 2
Monsters University
Planes
on my list of movies I would like to watch.

Or your tastes seem to change. Which is fine. Some well-regarded movies on that list, like, say, Frances Ha, which I enjoyed (and not just because she's from Sacramento, even though that's "hella" cool), probably would appeal less to me as I got older. I haven't seen all of them, but I was generally impressed with the quality of films in 2013.Calm Man wrote:I saw most of those. Catching Fire - an allegory of Obama land
Captain Philips
All is Lost
American Hustle - over rated in my opinion, but good
Wolf of Wall St - raw but entertaining
Rush - great human interest study
Mud
Dallas Byers Club
And, depending on timing definition
Zero Dark Thirty - great movie
Lone Survivor - best of the all

Wolf of Wall Street. Acting, characters, dialogue, directing, were excellent.

Having seen most the movies on the list my vote for the top movies would be (in no particular order)
American Hustle
Dallas Buyers Club
Nebraska
I had a good idea of the plots of these movies before I saw them, but Nebraska caught me by surprise with its sadness.
I wasn't impressed with Gravity , but managed to tough it out by focusing on Sandra Bullocks.. um..acting

When the only movies you see are the ones your granddaughters watch on dvd at home, the choice for best film tends to be animated and intended for the younger set.Dutch wrote:Hasscritic wrote:My Little Pony: Equestria Girls
I don't know how bogleheads can justify going to a movie theater and paying those prices. While movie theaters are good places for catching a quick nap, I can do that on my own couch without paying $6.50 for popcorn.
Added: other good places for a quick nap: Small World and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Re: Best Movies of 2013
Jobs (a/k/a Steve). Very entertaining
Re: Best Movies of 2013
Nebraska was very good and true to life. I know several octogenarians who are convinced they have won a lottery. Unfortunately, they gave money to scam artists.
American Hustle was very interesting and true to life. A boyhood friend will be getting out of state prison in July of 2018 for promising to obtain loans to troubled businessmen and charged from $5,000 to $250,000 for obtaining loans. The loans of course were never obtained. He also pulled a gun out on a Mafioso and owned multiple dry cleaners much like the leading character in the movie.

I saw "Her" last night. Not sure how long it has been out so I don't know if it qualifies for 2013. But very different type of movie and I enjoyed it

Re: Best Movies of 2013
I think you need to cut it some slack, because it's based on a true story. After we saw it, my wife and I researched it a bit, and I have concluded that all the locker room stuff was just part of the true story. Less locker room, less fidelity to the truth.Calm Man wrote:I saw most of those. It's kind of amazing, I don't feel comfortable discussing the details, but some of the grossest stuff in the movie can be sourced to actual events via multiple sources.
I think the facts gave the screenwriter license to tell a stranger than fiction story. I don't think anyone would write fiction about Wall Street that is that unbelievable and outrageous.
Re: Best Movies of 2013
Yes, you truly could not make up some of the stuff that happened.tadamsmar wrote:I think the facts gave the screenwriter license to tell a stranger than fiction story. I don't think anyone would write fiction about Wall Street that is that unbelievable and outrageous.

Star Trek! It was the only movie I watched last year, though, so I'm sure there were many more.

I enjoyed
42 The Jackie Robinson Story
Lee Daniels' The Butler
which don't seem to have been mentioned so far.
I'm still puzzling over American Hustle. I mean, I enjoyed it, but I don't know why the critics are going gaga and it's winning so many awards.
