Hi folks,
I was contemplating purchasing a mind machine as a way to combat insomnia and get off some sleep meds. The one I'm considering is :
http://www.amazon.com/Mindplace-Procyon ... cr_pr_pb_t
Its quite expensive (for me) and so trying to do my research before the purchase. Does anyone have experience with this one or similar machines ?
Thanks,
Rex

Re: mind machine anyone ?
???? Forgive me, but where does it even say that this machine is useful for combatting insomnia? I don't see any such suggestion anywhere.
Looking at the manufacturer's own description, I do not see the word "sleep" or the word "insomnia" anywhere.
They claim it can induce an "Altered state of consciousness," and that it can "Break undesirable states, like anger," showing that they are willing to make specific claims, but nothing about its begin a sleep aid.
At the risk of trivializing a situation, my current technique, which I invented for myself is as follows. When I wake earlier than expected and have difficulty falling back to sleep, this is what I do, and all I can say is, "it works for me." I try to remember a woman's first name beginning with each letter of the alphabet in turn. Annie, Barbara, Clara, Darlene, etc. I skip Q and X, and don't worry about low-quality or repetitive answers (always using "Kathryn" for "K", for example). I don't allow myself to get stuck for long--if I truly draw a blank I just skip to the next letter. I don't worry about low-quality or outré answers. I may use mens' names or other categories for variety. Or even let myself drift from category to category if I get stuck, which is usually a sign that I'm getting sleepy. Thus, Agatha, Bonita, Carrie, Desdemona, E, E, E, uh, ok, Eeyore, Fandango, Granite, Hematite, Iridium.
I suspect "counting sheep" might really work IF you happened to be someone who had actually had enough experience, in real life, watching sheep jump over a style that you could visualize them realistically in my head.

Re: mind machine anyone ?
I've not used such a device.
What has worked for me is blackout curtains to cut out light (like in good hotels)
and a small fan that generates a lot of white noise to block out sounds.

Thanks guys !
I've already tried pitch black curtains and a rain machine - both helped quite a bit. Was looking for another device to boost my sleep ..

I had a sleep problem for a while. I made the following adjustments.
Exercise every day, not just some days. Even if it is only a quick 2-3 mile walk.
Light meals in evening.
Avoid "screen" activities in the evening (TV, computer) - the light from LED screens seems to have an effect.
I try to go to bed at approximately the same time every night.

Re: mind machine anyone ?
Mind machine, sounds interesting.
I have the Harvard Sleep Book. It says that for some people, even a single glass of wine can cause you to awaken prematurely.
I try not to caffeine caffeine after 2:00P, including so-called decaf.
Rex, I'm sure you've already tried melatonin. It works wonders for me.
