Free books for kindle?

Post by ruralavalon »

I love to read, and I like free things.

Can anyone suggest other resources (with links) for locating free books for kindle?

I have a regular low-cost, no-frills, wi-fi connecting kindle. I recently stumbled across -- Free Books For Kindle: Linked List of Over 1000 . . . , by Morris Rosenthal . Its very easy to use: its Table of Contents is a list of authors; clicking on an author's name takes you to a list of the author's books; and clicking on a book title takes you to an Amazon page where you can read reviews of the book and order a free copy.

Can anyone suggest other good resources for locating free books?

Your local library.

I use Overdrive via my library to download books very seamlessly to Kindle.

If you're looking for classic content, Open Library has a good selection (http://openlibrary.org/). For more modern content, Smashwords has quite a few self-published ebooks that are free (http://www.smashwords.com/). Also keep in mind that you can convert free EPUB books into Mobi using software like Calibre for use on a Kindle.

Some libraries have ebook lending. I have borrowed a couple books for my Kindle from the Boston Public Library. I think you get a week or two to read the book before ot expires. Check with your local library.

if you go to www.bookbub.com you can sign up to receive a daily email from them for low/no cost books within the categories you have chosen. I have been using it for several months with no problems, no spam, etc.

I use Calibre to manage books for my Kindle. I can maintain a library on my PC and then download books to my Kindle when I want. I just plug the Kindle in and it tells me which books are on the device. Many older free books, including Project Gutenberg's libraries are in .epub format. Calibre will convert these to .azw (kindle) or .mobi (and many other formats as needed).

Similar to the e-book from Amazon that I mentioned at the start: Free Science Fiction Books On Kindle: Linked List of over 350 . . . , by Morris Rsenthal .

Haven't read the thread, so I dunno if this has been posted yet. Works great for me! I like the category breakdown.

My tip of the day: At the free site http://www.ereaderiq.com/ you can keep a watch list and get an email notification when a book on your list drops in price. I maintain a list of about 30 books, and maybe once or twice a month I get a notification that one has dropped in price, at which point I make it my next read. :)

Same website also has a list of free books - good way to catch ones that have recently been made free for a limited time.

Thanks for nothing! I had been able to resist the instant-gratification of eBooks at, you know $9.99 and $7.19 and even $3.99 but $1.99 is a magic number for me and I am buying $1.99 books faster than I can read them. I can resist all the cheesy-looking brand-X spy thrillers, romances, and detective stories but several times a week it comes up with something really tempting.

Google the name of the book or the writer you're interested in and add .epub after the name.

Download the .epub file (if your google search was succesfull).

Use calibre free software to convert and transfer to your kindle.
