Bar shenanigans

Post by Billy Pilgrim »

I was talking to a client today and the subject of holiday parties came up. For the past couple of years they had a favorite restaurant they would go to. But this year the restaurant went under new management and that is when things got weird. He heard a story that management was pushing their open bar packages onto people holding parties which were ridiculously expensive. If parties did not take the open bar packages and instead choose to pay for an open tab, the bar would treat cocktails as two separate drinks. So a Jack and Coke became one shot of Jack and one Coke. So my client's boss decided to go somewhere else instead.

Has anyone ever heard of that?

I guess the bar is free to push their open bar deal, but if they billed a drink in a "non-traditional" way, that doesn't sound right.

I think it's for the best your firm is going somewhere else.

I think all shenanigans should be barred.

The Bogleheads are a diverse group. I'm sure someone who has experience with this will stagger forward at some point.

An open bar package with the employer paying for it? In case of an accident after the party with a party goer drunk, the employer would be liable with his deep pockets.

From this forum's guidelines:
If you aren't sure if a topic you are about to post is OK, ask yourself whether it is both related to a consumer issue and actionable. By actionable, I mean whether you (or other readers) will potentially be able to use the information to better utilize your time or money.
