IPAD: Shared or Separate Usernames re: Apps

Postby bagelhead » Sat Dec 22, 2012 9:33 pm

We have purchased an Ipad for our parents, who often watch our kids. We would like them to have access to all of our purchased applications, many of which are children's applications.

Is there any way to do this without setting up their Ipad using our Apple ID? Is there any disadvantage to doing this? (e.g., can they otherwise use separate Mail, Calendar, etc. to maintain everyone's privacy?)

Thanks!

Looks like you can do it. Here's a link to lots of "how to" threads. https://www.google.com/#hl=en&tbo=d&out ... 36&bih=638

Here's a link to an inexpensive app that claims to do exactly what you're looking for without some of the other more complex maneuvers listed in some of the other links. https://itunes.apple.com/app/id471773203

My spouse and I use a common Apple ID so that we both have access to all of the apps and music we have purchased. We also maintain completely separate e-mail, calendars, task lists, and so forth. We've never had any trouble with it. Every once in a while, if one of us gets a new app, it will automatically show up on the other one's iPad. If it's something I don't want, I just delete it from my iPad. That doesn't affect his set up at all. It does mean, though, that we always know what the other one has downloaded. That's not a problem for us, but if you want more privacy from your parents, that could be an issue I suppose.

By the way, we use Google calendar and e-mail. They work seamlessly with the native calendar and e-mail apps. For some odd reason, Google tasks won't sync with the reminders app on the iPad. No problem there, we just use the free GoTasks app.

It's easiest if you use the same Apple ID. You can still have separate accounts for email, etc., so that you can share apps but not other things.

Under Settings, Store, the email address should be set to YOUR Apple ID on both iPads. Under Settings, iCloud, your parents should enter their OWN Apple ICloud ID, different from your Apple ID entered in the Store. You can do the same for Mail, Contacts, Calendars and Messages so everything is kept separate.

Does anyone know how to keep apps and downloads separate when you've got multiple idevices on a single account? I have no need for minecraft cheat codes and I'm really tired of having my playlist ambushed by Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry.

Under Settings, Store, turn off Automatic Downloads (there are separate selections for Music, Apps and Books).

This is critical if you are sharing with pre-teens or teens as it sounds like you are. :happy

Thanks. And actually sharing the settings did have certain benefits. Because along with Miley Cyrus I also got two apps that were not quite porn, but did give me a rather clear status report on how certain interests are progressing. "Hmmm, a couple of apps just appeared on my phone - do these belong to you?"  Sorry, mom.
