FORUM'S UPCOMING 7TH BIRTHDAY

Post by Mel Lindauer »

On Febuary 19th, the forum will celebrate its 7th birthday. What an amazing trip it's been! Founded in 2007, here are some recent forum stats to show how far we've come in this short period of time:
  • * The forum now boasts ~35,000 registered members and about 4 times that many "guests".
    * Members have made nearly two million posts.
    * The forum gets more than 1,500,000 visits per month.
    * The forum averages more than 16,500,000 page reads per month.
    * At any one time, there are between 500 and 700 people online.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to make this the Premier investing site on the Internet.

Happy Birthday!

Wouldn't this be the 2014-2007 = 7th birthday?

[edit] The rest of the numbers look really great!

Mel:

Those are AMAZING statistics, especially for a 7-year old forum with no conflict-of-interest commercialism.

It is an honor to participate in this world-wide internet forum dedicated to sharing "investing advice inspired by the wisdom of Jack Bogle."

Thank you for your leadership; your thousands of posts; and your selfless contributions behind the scene every day. And thanks also to the thousands of members who contribute their knowledge and experience helping others achieve their financial goals the Boglehead Way:

1 Develop a workable plan
2 Invest early and often
3 Never bear too much or too little risk
4 Diversify
5 Never try to time the market
6 Use index funds when possible
7 Keep costs low
8 Minimize taxes
9 Invest with simplicity
10 Stay the course

Best wishes.

You also failed to mention that the 19th is my 75th birthday - I know, no big deal around here and Taylor may think of me as simply a kid - yet thanks to BH.org and folks like Laura & Taylor & Mel the dear wife and I are much better off today than when we found this site nearly 7 years ago. May we all continue to have good fortune, Rich

Those are amazing statistics!

A big tip o' the prudent hat to the founders, those who operate the board, the mods, and the tremendous contributions of the membership. There are few opportunities to make a great impact on someone's long-term financial health, and this board achieves that.

Here's another amazing statistic, Taylor. Since we started this journey in 1998, you and I have combined for a total of nearly 85,000 posts between the old Morningstar forum and this one. We've had a good ride together in this labor of love. You've been a great partner, and I dearly value your friendship.

* At any one time, there are between 500 and 700 people online.
What does this number mean? When I look at the list of people online below the conversations there is typically 20-30 names there.
But, Happy Birthday to a most sucessful and useful forum anyway.

Those numbers become more impressive once you've tried to build an investing website, had some success with it, and then realize that the Bogleheads forum gets 90 times the traffic you do.

Thanks to everyone. The thing that makes this forum special is the people.

Hi:

Although we are three months shy of our May 9 initiation date for the 6th anniversary of the wiki, here are our current numbers:

* The wiki has 199 editors, 14 of whom have been active over the past 30 days.
* Editors have created 778 content pages, and a grand total of 3,417 pages including talk pages, redirects, etc.
* Editors have made 45,747 edits in total .
* The wiki has been viewed 11,928,236 times since founding (as of 2/12/2014) and counting.
* Currently the wiki receives 12,000 views a day; this translates to 365,000 views a month, and 4,380,000 views a year.

Our Bogleheads.org | Facebook (start-up date 10/23/2010) administators would need to fill us in on the stats from our third iteration to complete the picture.

regards,
Additional administrative tasks: Financial Page bogleheads.org. blog; finiki the Canadian wiki; The Bogle Center for Financial Literacy site; La Guía Bogleheads® España site.

It's the quality, not the quantity, of some contributors that makes this site special.

I especially enjoy those contributors who clearly listen and reflect before they respond.

The wiki is a wonderful resource.

This forum is like a shining city on a hill. I am proud to be able to contribute in any small way I can.
Advertisers must be hounding you to get their hands on this. I am so glad that I only see links to boglehead books.

This forum is a true gem born from honest, hard work. Thank you.

Is it true that 1% of the members made over half of the posts? Talk about disparity! What is our Gini coefficient?

Agree with poster Barry Barnitz on the need for stats on the forum, wiki, and Facebook for an inclusive Big Picture, and with poster Levett on the importance of quality in our postings. And thanks again to Mel, Taylor, and Laura for their leadership in providing both quality and quantity. :beer

My latest Forbes column about our upcoming 7th birthday is an expanded version of this thread and includes some important forum history. I've also quoted many of the nice things some of you have said on this thread.

Exactly. Thanks to the many users who share their wisdom. Special thanks to the select few in the 5 digit club.

To answer a version of my own question:

The top 50 posters, i.e., the top 0.143% (50/35000) of all members, have 463,451 posts or 23% of the 2 million posts. So which 1% would you rather be in?

P.S. make that 463,452.
