This was a really funny/interesting story to read about. If you follow the NFL at all you would know that Alfred Morris had a spectacular rookie season, which earned him a ton of money. Really cool to see him staying true to his roots, at least for now.

I've been a big fan since last season after seeing how he started out (3rd string RB in a Mike Shanahan offense) and stepping up when the opportunity was given to him. I had read that he drove an old 626 and it brought back memories of the old Camry I drove in college. I hope he's able to stick with his frugal nature but if he's able to maintain his health a big pay day is coming his way and that will include all sorts of temptation.

Nice read. Hope he keeps it up.
So sad to read about the many former NFL players who are broke after making millions. Only if they would come to this forum

Everything is relative, right? Morris' great season didn't earn him much in terms of NFL pay - about $200k. That being said, when his rookie contract expires in 3-4 years then he'll get paid nicely (IF he stays healthy, not a given for a RB). $200k is a fine amount of incentive pay for anyone, but not extraordinary in the NFL.

Putting a ton of money to refurb a 20-year old car probably isn't the best financial move for the regular joe, but I wouldn't be surprised if Mazda is doing this gratis.

Either way, it says a lot about Morris. He seems to understand how quickly his NFL career could disappear, and he clearly takes pride in his thrift and wants to pass that along to his children.

He's an easy player to root for.

The guy is a tightwad and is living seriously below his means (at least we assume so from the one example given). That's not what a Bogleheads is about....it is about investing intelligently - diversifying, keeping investing costs down, managing taxes wisely, being passive, setting an appropriate AA...

You could argue and say that he's also not wasting money on a new car, just because he has the extra cash lying around... This, in principle, IS investing intelligently, no?

Either way, the point of the thread was to just show a person who is making an extraordinary amount of money not going out and spending it all on a huge pay day.

I assumed that when I read the article. Look at the publicity that Mazda is getting already.

His total compensation for the year was in excess of $750k. According to the collective bargaining agreement the minimum base salary for NFL rookies who make the active roster is currently $405k and increases every season.

Would be interesting if any famous athletes or celebrities actually do post or lurk on Bogleheads, flying under the radar. These are groups that are heavily stereotyped but, like everything else, I'm sure there are exceptions.

The average NFL career of a running back is pretty short, so he's probably not living as far below his means as you might think. If he gets four seasons in the NFL he might end up with a $2 million portfolio, or $60k a year based on a 3% rate of withdraw.

Not only they have a short career, their agents take a big cut of their pay in addition to the government.

Pro athletes really have problems handling money. They aren't experienced in that area, and are seen truthfully as easy marks. The 1% of assets per year financial advisers we deride here would be a big step up from the types that prey on these people.

Sports Illustrated did a good story on this phenomenon a few years ago.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/ ... MAG1153364

Some of the numbers are shocking. For example within 2 years of retiring 78% of pro football players are bankrupt.

It would be quite the Boglehead outreach project to help these guys out.
