Vanguard Webinar on Actively Managed Funds

Postby ResearchMed » Thu Apr 25, 2013 10:26 am

This just in....

Dear Xxxx Y Zzzzz,

You're invited to join us on May 9, 2013, for a live video webcast about actively managed stock funds. Daniel Wallick, from Vanguard Investment Strategy Group, and Steve Holman, a leader in Vanguard Flagship Services®, will discuss the topic and answer your questions.

During the webcast, you'll:

Find out which characteristics are shared by successful actively managed funds.
Hear about Vanguard's approach to active management.
Learn how to decide if actively managed funds have a place in your portfolio.

Date: Thursday, May 9, 2013
Time: 7 p.m., Eastern time

Wonder how they define "successful"?
Better than index funds? Better than other actively managed funds? Or...?

I received that invite also and signed up for the show.

Being an indexer, I doubt if they can convince me to become active again, but VG webinars are usually very enlightening and I generally get good information from them so far.

We have to remember that the Vanguard TIPS fund is "active" as well as many bond funds that members use.

With respect to the equity side, they offer low-cost actives that provide a chance, but the spinning wheel did not turn out too favorably for U.S. Growth. It could be another one of their active funds next time.

Isn't the Wellington Fund actively managed as well? This is a solid fund with a very low ER, as is Wellesly.

Those unappreciated Vanguard active fund managers need an occasional pat on the back. How about it, Taylor?

It was a perfectly rational and responsible presentation.

Funny how some funds have been consistently "lucky."

Some of us are really quite happy to hold a combo of LLCA (Lucky Low Cost Active) and index. :happy

I just listened to this webinar and was disappointed. Not once did they address active management with respect to fixed income. Since many Vanguard fixed income funds have expense ratios around 10-11bp they deserve mention. They emphasized the bigger expected roller coaster ride of actively managed funds. IMO, one of the features of Vanguard's actively managed balanced funds such as Wellesley is the lack of the big roller coaster ride. Balanced funds received no mention. Very shallow dive IMO, especially since I believe only Flagship clients were invited. I could be wrong on that, but not the shallow part.
