Postby nowmoney24 » Thu Apr 04, 2013 11:00 pm

Been looking around and I'm actually having trouble finding this,

I was hoping for a list or something but I can't seem to find one.

I believe some of the largest industries are oil and gas, insurance, automotive, food, but I can't find a definitive list or ranking can you guys help?

Well, this is just for public companies, but it's worth a try. Scroll on down to "Sector Weightings".

Any division into industries is artificial. Something like "technology" includes both Apple and Freescale. Much of Freescale's output goes into things like cars, so arguably it should be in automotive?

The division into "industry" often says more about the person doing the dividing than it does about the economy.

Energy is by far the biggest industry in the world at 15% to 30% of the world GDP. Plus it is an input into all other industries (thus why the 2 to 1 variation in how it is calculated). Look around at home many countries GDP is run on their energy output, think Russia or Venezula or Iran or half the middle east.

do you have a source for that?

in my research I found food is the biggest industry at 10% of world GDP. 15-30% is a very significant part of the pie and would mean that the energy sector has a gdp of approx 100T

Absolute $$ energy consumption is around 8% or so according to the Energy Institute data here

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=htt ... AQ&dur=228

But I am under the impression that this data does not include the $$ imbedded in every other commodity like food and wheat and copper and iron and so forth that is bought in the world. So when commodites percentages are talked about they usually say energy is around 15-30% of the commodities market. This is where I got the number.

The institutional page of Vanguard's total world fund lists sector weightings at the bottom of this page https://institutional.vanguard.com/VGApp/iip/site/institutional/investments/portfoliodetails?fundId=0826#SectorWeightings.

Financials 21.9%
Information Technology 12.0%
Industrials 11.6%
Consumer Discretionary 11.1%
Consumer Staples 10.1%
Energy 9.7%
Health Care 9.1%
Materials 7.4%
Telecommunication Services 3.7%
Utilities 3.4%

though these sectors will have several industries, like banking and insurance are both part of financials, car and doorknob making are part of industrials, etc.
