Nobel laureate Ronald Coase launching new journal

Postby bobcat2 » Sat Dec 29, 2012 8:10 pm

Economics Nobel laureate Ronald Coase is currently in discussion with university publishers about launching a new economics journal. The tentative title of the new journal is Man and the Economy. Earlier this year Coase co-authored the book, How China Became Capitalist. Coase's Nobel prize mainly rests on the basis of two famous papers he authored - The Nature of the Firm (1937), and The Problem of Social Cost (1960).

Today, December 29, Ronald Coase celebrates his 102nd birthday. So here's wishing Professor Coase a very happy birthday and also thanking him for giving the rest of us hope that we too can live not just long lives, but long productive lives.

Amen to that!

Coase's greatest accomplishment, IMO, was being the only human known to get Milton Friedman to admit he was wrong about something (the regulation/social cost issue).

Ronald Coase, who helped found the field of law and economics and won the 1991 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, died earlier this week at age 102. Coase was an active scholar from the 1930s up until his death, releasing a book and launching a new academic journal just last year. His work over those eight decades is impossible to summarize adequately, but the following link summarizes five of his important papers and gives a good taste of the problems with which he concerned himself and the way he approached them.

Speaking as a retired academic, one of the things I love most about his CV is that he didn't carpet bomb journals with articles. When he spoke and published, it mattered.

The other thing I admire is his lack of pretense.

RIP.
