WSJ.com is also down. Probably coincidence, but are we next?

Actually, if you go to bogleheads.org, without the www, it currently isn't working. So, we're sort of down...heartwood wrote:WSJ.com is also down. Probably coincidence, but are we next?

Re: NYSE trading halted
These are the times I LOVE being a long term, passive investor. If the market is halted for a long time it wouldn't matter.
I can only imagine what the micro, nano second traders must be doing about now.
Good luck.

I've noticed a lot of problems with the net recently, both slow downs and crashes. Traffic/router issues?

Re: NYSE trading halted
From USA Today "It’s important to note trading in stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange can continue even when the NYSE is down. Many stocks trade on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq not to mention other dedicated electronic networks. These other venues allow traders to buy and sell NYSE listed stocks – even as the NYSE itself is down. Only about 20% of trading in NYSE listed stocks actually occurs on the New York Stock Exchange, as traders have moved much of their volume to other exchanges"

Saw your post title and had a mini heart attack, then saw the follow up replies and also went straight to a news page and saw it is a technical problem, and not the end of the world. Whewwww!

Sounds like Bloomberg is handing out $5 Starbucks gift certificates to its reporters for every time they mention the words "hacker", "cyber-criminal", "hack attack" or "firewall".

NYSE, UAL, and WSJ all experiencing shutdowns at the same time but Feds say nothing to worry about. Whew, what a relief.

I remember during the London subway bombings they were calling it a power surge for several hours.
Re: NYSE trading halted
Exchanges have already been hacked before:
http://www.bloomberg.com/bw/articles/20 ... the-nasdaqIn October 2010, a Federal Bureau of Investigation system monitoring U.S. Internet traffic picked up an alert. The signal was coming from Nasdaq (NDAQ). It looked like malware had snuck into the company’s central servers. There were indications that the intruder was not a kid somewhere, but the intelligence agency of another country. More troubling still: When the U.S. experts got a better look at the malware, they realized it was attack code, designed to cause damage.

Hate to be a spoil sport about all you "not to worry" folk but if the NYSE is not up by 14:30 there is apparently going to be a problem calculating Index values.
S&P is supposed to "say something" by 14:30 per Bloomberg TV.

Warren Buffett has always advised that you should have a portfolio that you would be comfortable with if the markets suddenly shut down for five years. Maybe this is a nice reminder and an opportunity to re-evaluate your asset allocation recipe.

Re: NYSE trading halted
Anyone else watching the chatter in bitcoin communities today? Or seen the hints that NASDAQ is experimenting with pegging securities trading to the bitcoin blockchain: Nasdaq Launches Enterprise-Wide Blockchain Technology Initiative.
The Colored Coins technology mentioned in the article is about pegging ownership of securities to bitcoin. So ownership of a specific satoshi (one 100-millionth of a bitcoin) is pegged to ownership of a specific security. As the satoshi trades, so trades the pegged security. This allows security trading to be recorded on the bitcoin ledger, and facilitated by the decentralized bitcoin network. This offers considerably greater protection against "hacks" and "glitches".
Note how the article does not once mention the word "bitcoin". It's still taboo, so they instead euphemize it as "blockchain-enabled digital ledger technology".

Re: NYSE trading halted
So he suggests 5 years worth of cash?? Not sure what else you would have as an AA in that scenario, but that would be a complete collapse of the economy - an almost apocalyptic type scenario. I don't think people should follow that logic.Browser wrote:Warren Buffett has always advised that you should have a portfolio that you would be comfortable with if the markets suddenly shut down for five years. I retitled the thread. Here's the article: NYSE resumes floor trading after more than 3-hour halt
