Composition of Vanguard Institutional Total Stock Market Index Fund Institutional Plus Shares (VITPX)

Post by totalgoods »

I have a quick question and I don't know where/how to find it.

I know this fund

Vanguard Institutional Total Stock Market Index Fund Institutional Plus Shares (VITPX)

has a mix of large-, mid-, and small- cap funds. However, can anyone tell me what the breakdown is in terms of percentages?

Thank you.

Depends where you break down the delineations between large and mid, and mid and small. There is no consensus and different groups do it different ways. Basically, the fund has market cap weighting of securities, so the percentage of large, mid, and small in the fund trivially just depend on where you set the breakpoints*. If you define large caps as companies with capitalization that make up the largest 70% of the market, the fund is 70% large caps, for instance.

The index provider, CRSP, also has a description:

Morningstar is a standard enough source and may be what you're asking for.

*okay, not quite, since the fund doesn't include micro cap companies and some that don't quite meet the screening criteria, but close enough

https://personal.vanguard.com/us/FundsS ... IntExt=INT
"Seeks to track the performance of the CRSP US Total Market Index."
"Vanguard Institutional Total Stock Market Index Fund seeks to track the performance of a benchmark index that measures the investment return of the overall stock market."
"The fund employs an indexing investment approach designed to track the performance of the CRSP US Total Market Index, which represents nearly 100% of the investable U.S. Stock market covering large-, mid-, small-, and micro-cap stocks regularly traded on the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ."

It is simply a Total US Stock Market Index Fund.

The question of the breakdown in terms of percentages of large-, mid-, and small- cap funds stocks (or of growth and value styles etc) is basically a meaningless question, and is of no consequence. An answer in terms of percentages, depends on what definitions are used. But it simply doesn't matter.

Knowing that it's a Total US Stock Market Index Fund, completely answers the question.

morningstar breaks down VITPX (the total stock market) as follows:

LV 23%, LB 25%, LG 24%
MV 06%, MB 06%, MG 07%
SV 03%, SB 03%, SG 03%

might be a good starting guideline if you wanted to overweight or underweight a portion of the market.
