457 Investment Choices

Post by hotscot »

I don't normally ask others to do my research but I'm just starting and the online system for the 457 is very cumbersome.

I'd appreciate if anyone would have a quick glance at these choices and make a couple of suggestion off the top of your head if you feel any stand out in terms of value.
Then I'll research further in detail.

Thank You.

That is one ugly list.

To do this right, you need to look up the expense ratio for each fund and also see if there is a load. Morningstar tells you straight out if there is a load. If you look elsewhere, if it says Class A, there is a load. Many (most) I looked at had loads.

I skipped all sector funds (real estate, energy). I just looked for a large cap blend (or value) with no loads and a bond fund. I didn't find much. Of the ones I looked at the Target Retirement funds were the least offensive.

If you can find a large cap blend without a load and use the PIMCO Total Return, you might be OK.

Is there a match?

But most importantly, is this a governmental or non-governmental 457b?

Thanks for the feedback..pretty new to this but I already felt the choices were poor.

You'd have to know the expense ratios and fees to make an informed choice.

The choices are poor, but deferring taxes is a good thing for most folks. If you stumble on something with lower expenses than the target funds, let us know. Good luck!

Thank you all.

We'll go with one of the Target Funds and keep it simple.
We have many other investments including Vanguard and Fidelity low cost funds that we're happy with since we tend to buy and hold rather than actively trade.

Decide on an asset allocation for this account. Than buy some TRP Capital Appreciation(a fund with a terrific record http://money.usnews.com/funds/mutual-fu ... fund/prwcx
an expense ratio of .71 and more importantly an excellent objective and approach and also some of a target fund given that CAP AP is roughly a 60-40 fund.
