Now that my nefarious plan to take the thread OT has worked out so well....Grt2bOutdoors wrote:Does that mean I can shut the flow of natural gas you use to heat your home today? Give me your address. Same when you enter the gas station to fuel up your car - since you don't believe in the product, no need to sell it to you. Plan on going on vacation to the Caribbean islands after that extremely cold winter you experienced? The sailboat will be waiting for you by the Ben Franklin bridge, Bon Voyage - you might reach your destination by mid September if the "winds" blow the right way. I mean, after all, oil is bad for the environment, since planes fly with oil derived byproducts, the sole alternative is to harness the "wind".just frank wrote:As an environmentalist myself, I don't fear low oil prices at all. I think in 10 years, investing in oil will be about as popular/sensible as investing in coal is today.
How do you fuel up your car? Hydro? Solar? Wind? Ever take ibruprofen for pain? - where do you think it comes from? Solar, Hydro, Wind?
How about the shoes you wear? Are you the feller walking around in a sheep-fur sweater? Where do you think fleece comes from? Solar? Wind? Hydro? How about your cellphone, ipod, Ipad? Really, before anyone talks it would help if they first did the research to back up the claims, otherwise, you just wind up sounding ill-informed, maybe that's why most people tune you out. Strip away the energy tax credits and solar/wind will be as popular as drinking motor oil. Those are the facts.
I never said I didn't use any petroleum products at all, but my family of four is using maybe 75% less of them than we were, say in 2008, for home heating and transportation. Back then each year we burned 1400 gallons of heating oil for heat and hot water, 7000 kWh for electricity, 500 gallons of gasoline for the cars, and let's say a similar amount (500 gallons) of aviation fuel. Last year we used about 18,000 kWh of `wind' power from western PA for heat, DHW, appliances and 10,000 EV miles. Let's say 100 gallons of gasoline for the second car, and still 500 gallons of aviation fuel.
We went from 2400 gallons of petroleum products to 600. No decrease in lifestyle. Lower cost. If we can do it, why can't millions of other americans?
