When was the last time you HAD TO use your emergency fund?

Just curious how many of us have ever actually needed to tap into our emergency fund (for an actual emergency).

It's all about short-term opportunistic rebalancing due to a short-term change in one's asset allocation, uh, I mean opportunistic rebalancing, uh I mean rebalancing, uh I mean market timing.

This morning. I transferred $1,000 from my Roth IRA to my credit union checking account to cover a temporary cash flow emergency.

My entire portfolio is my emergency fund. I use it every month.

Before I was retired, I was self employed. I always had to draw out of my emergency fund during those slow winter months. I would repay what I took out when work picked up.

Every year I got into the emergency fund. That's why it was there.

During my senior year of college, my wife's transmission went out. I did not think about it then as using my emergency fund because I just had money. Looking back, it probably fits into the category of using an emergency fund.

I have always tried to live below my means, so I have always had money available for whatever came up (e.g., emergency, vacation, spontaneous spending).

I don't believe in superstition, but I refuse to answer this question. Sorry.

Ditto, except I don't really have an "emergency fund". When stuff happens I use my credit card(s) and if I can't pay it off the next month I then (reluctantly) cash out some of my portfolio.

2008. Busted heat pump that required replacement. Not a huge emergency, but sudden catastrophic failure of major appliances meet the charter for my fund.

Depends on your definition of tapping your emergency funds. Three weeks ago I tapped it to buy an international plane ticket flying out within 24 hours (actually, paid by card and immediately paid the card from the emergency cash) and pre-pay all my bills for the month. But now, three weeks later, my two paychecks have refilled my emergency fund.

So for the purposes of the poll, do I count that?

I would say no.
