The 1.76% is the inflation adjustment. The fixed rate is 0%

Still way better than 95bps at an online bank. Plus it's tax deferred and state tax free.

There a great investment and I would dare to say mentioned daily on this site Just use search engine to find other post.I would use Ira or 401 first in most cases but besides that great for short term or mid term. As far as long term look at or compare to EE bonds

These are a great alternative to CDs of any length right now. The fed has an inflation target of 2% (I believe that was the last number I'm remembering for it). So with the tax deferral and ability to cash out after 1 year with only a 3mo penalty, these are hard to beat.

I-bonds are a great alternative to TIPS and TIPS funds for inflation protection, that is unless you expect TIPS real yields (fixed rate) to become even more negative.

The main problem with I-Bonds is the amount one is able to purchase. The limit was more generous in the past, and if you went over you might receive a scolding letter but you also would probably be allowed to keep all your purchases, including your "overages."

Once upon a time you could use a cash-back credit and enjoy an additional bonus, on top of a 3.6% fixed rate of interest.

Alas, those times are gone. :(

Still, at the end of the month when all my bills are paid and I have a couple of hundred bucks left over, I often head over to Treasury Direct and buy a I-Bond or a EE-Bond, or one of each. Both type bonds have unique characteristics that make them worthwhile of investment, even in this abysmal interest rate era.

Over a few years time you can still collect a nice chunk of I-Bonds, especially if you are married.
