Risk and Risk Control in an Era of Confidence (or is it Greed?) By John Bogle Date: 04/06/2000 In these extraordinary and volatile markets we are facing today, its difficult for me to imagine more appropriate subjects than Risk and Risk Control to sound the keynote for an Agenda for the Futurethe perennial theme, as I understand it, for this conference. It has been "Reward, of course, that has been the keynote of the past 18 years, and most particularly for the past six years, during which the longest and strongest bull market in the history of the world has taken a new lease on life. Even as it is always darkest before the dawn, however, it may well always be brightest just before evening begins to fall. When reward is at ...

Leonard,
You said you have read the instructions for 6251 but I am not sure if you have seen the AMT Assistant available on the IRS website.
One can use this assistant to determine if they need to fill out 6251.
H&R Block has AMT Estimator. I haven't used this but have used other calculators and have found it to be accurate.
Turbo Tax also has an online Tax Estimator which calculates AMT.
Neither of these require personal information for calculation purposes.

Reminds me of what Bogle said "The enemy of a good portfolio is the search for the perfect portfolio."Bo Derek - A slang term used to describe a perfect stock or investment. In the 1979 hit movie "10", actress Bo Derek portrayed the "perfect woman", or "the perfect 10".

Indexed Investing: A Prosaic Way to Beat the Average Investor By William F. Sharpe Summary: Indexed investing is a strategy designed to match a market, not beat it. Done properly, it can be cheap and tax-efficient. After costs and taxes, an indexed investor in a market can beat the average active investor. Many investment vehicles, both mutual funds and the more recently introduced exchange-traded funds, make it possible for individuals to invest some or all of their assets in indexed strategies. This talk elaborates on these points, describes some of the more attractive funds and shows how indexed investing can be used to help obtain a globally diversified portfolio. Re: Importance of value tilt in foreign funds?
Is value tilting as important in foreign funds as in domestic funds. What are recommended ratios of EAFE to foreign value? Yes - as per Fama & French in their paper titled Value Versus Growth: The International Evidence Value stocks have higher returns than growth stocks in markets around the world. For 1975-95, the difference between the average returns on global portfolios of high and low book-to-market stocks is 7.60% per year, and value stocks outperform growth stocks in 12 of 13 major markets. An international CAPM cannot explain the value premium, but a two-factor model that includes a risk factor for relative distress captures the value premium in international returns. http://www.chicagogsb.edu/capideas/fall97/fama.htm "Va...

I agree with Phoenix. I personally would like to see other people's signatures. But the existence of excessively long ones, or ones with banners, always end up making me opt out of viewing all signatures. Are there easy ways to restrict signatures such that: - graphics are not allowed - font size is limited - bolding allowed only on small text - limited number of lines (so that someone's post doesn't make people scroll too much). I would think these restrictions would be good for the overall forum. Thanks for your consideration! I concur. As I said in another post banners/images are a distraction and take up bandwidth. I would limit the signature to one liner. Case in point - It appears fire5soon has a 5/6 line signature. (Sorry F5S) ;)

Bob/RM,
Thanks for your replies.
I currently do S&D and have value tilt (both SCV & Intl Value) but don't have any REITs (outside of TSM)
I have been following the conversation 57643 if it's a good time to invest in REIT.
Thanks to Andy (wagnerjb) I ran into the investopedia article that said we should look at FFO or AFFO rather PE ratios.
I was planning to start another post but have you seen any articles that compare REIT's on FFO(Funds from operations) multiples.

Interesting conversations regarding BRISX and microcaps in the old forum 54668 and 56237 Rick Ferri said I create asset allocations based on the returns of indexes and then decide which funds to use to track those indexes. The mandate of BRSIX was to follow the CRSP Decile 10 induce (micro cap stocks). However, over the last couple of years BRSIX has very high tracking error against that benchmark, which I am concerned about. There is nothing "wrong" with BRSIX, but I think the company has not been completely honest about the investment objectives on that fund. The return numbers don't make sense compared to the Decile 10 induce, and the median market cap numbers don't signal a Decile 10 focus either. I am seeking a long-term solu...

The Yahoo link does not work but I checked the original Market watch link I do agree with others that the article stressed simplicity. However, Yes, it does cost a minimum investment of $3,000 in each of the funds, for a total of $9,000. (Kevin was able to get those minimums waived because his father owns a lot of Vanguard funds.) But my advice to David is: You have to start somewhere, so shoot for this one. What I inferred was Kevin was able to waive the minimums and secondly the column minimum investment was not the amount invested. Portfolio allocation was 60%-VTSMX, 30%-VGTSX and 10-VBMFX and depending on the investment (5000-10000) it was allocated accordingly. But then again I think the message of the article was simplicity and asset ...

Hi John and Everyone:
Taylor and I want you to know that we're working behind the scenes to try to come up with a workable solution. It probably will take some time, so we don't want you to think that we're not working on it.
We've developed a number of scenarios and solutions, and are trying to play Solomon to select the option that works best for everyone, if that's humanly possible.
In the meantime, continue to post wherever you're most comfortable. However, that doesn't mean you have to choose to limit yourself to one site or the other. There are lots of good Diehards at both sites, and many of them post at both sites.
Best regards to all,
Mel & Taylor

Second option is copy the content you want to quote (could be from the earlier post or from another website) and in your reply hit the "Quote" button, paste the content you want to quote and then hit the Quote button.
Same goes for bold/italics/underline etc.

Folks,
I know there are other alternatives to Internet Explorer (Maxthon / Opera ) etc but I prefer Firefox and installing some add-ons makes surfing a very pleasurable experience (Not to mention ad-free surfing)
Give it a shot.

2. Install the extensions
Adblock Plus, IE Tab - To open certain links in Internet Explorer, Flash block

One forum
My vote is NOT to split the sub-forums.
But we should definitely add some sticky's. These could be in a different sub-forum just to keep the main forum simple otherwise the sticky list would be too long.
Some of the sticky's could be
1. Reading list (from diehards.org)
2. Investment gems that Taylor & others maintain
3. Tax efficiency/in-efficiency of funds
4. Free online books (Rick Ferri's, Frank Armstrong's etc)
5. First steps
I know others will chime in with better recommendations.
