Double wides are very common in the country. One was put up next to me, and it certainly doesn’t detract from the value of my stick built home. It has a steeply pitched roof and dormers, in fact. Cheaper built doubles can deteriorate in time, I’ve had tradesmen tell me. Depends on what you pay for. Tim

Re: Recommendation for good charging station to charge phones, tablets
I got a seven-port charging station from Satechi on amazon for about $45, plus extra for charging cables. It was worth it. The unit sits flat, with slots on top for phones and iPads or kindle. I had an anker and it worked, but kept falling off the tables, with my electronics in a messy array spread out everywhere. This puts everything in one spot and works like a charm. Tim

Colleges SHOULD face financial pressures. They have gone off the rails. Contributing even a mite to them only worsens the problem. Let 50 percent of them fail, save the useable math, science, tech and vocational portions, and let the "liberal arts" faculties go down the chute. Tim

An FA is pointless. Or rather, the point of an FA is not to make money for you, but for himself and his firm. I can only echo the advice above, once you know enough to realize the advice you're being given is bogus, you know enough to manage your own money. It really ain't hard and the same principles apply to $1 million as to $10,000. Tim

I watch a lot of home shows on hgtv as entertainment and I never fail to be stunned at how demanding people are now about home furnishings. I date myself of course but I remember when installing armstrong's solarian sheet vinyl was high class stuff. So I've gone to a local furniture store as well as lowes and simply put regular vinyl in our house. As I intend to leave it when I'm carried out in a box I don't care about resale. The convenience has been great. Holds up, no water problems ever. Much cheaper. Tim

Re: Kitchen knife set. Good quality - Recommendations
Before spending money on knives, first learn to sharpen a knife. I'm very serious. My niece sold cutco cutlery for a while. They have a spiel, but the real secret to their demos is that their knives are sharp while practically all their customers have very dull knives. Your wife doesn't like Chicago cutlery, but that's actually good carbon steel. I'm tempted to ask, how long has it been since she sharpened them? Not trying to be snarky, but investing in a sharpening system, or just a plain stone, might be the way to go. Tim

Also, if you are using loose tea, I've found most modern teapots are designed for teabags. If you want one with a sieve at the bottom of the spout, go on eBay and look for a hall teapot, New York or Boston style, or an English made vintage pot, such as one by ellgreaves.

There isn't any need to split your money among so many funds. The funds offered in the NC state plan by Black Rock Advisers seem to be the ones you want. Go simply with the large cap index, bond index and international index fund from black rock for a simple three fund index plan. These are very low cost funds it seems, similar to vanguard sp500, total bond index and intl funds. Keep it simple. Tim

The Mandibles by Lionel Shriver.... I dislike most modern fiction, sticking to nonfiction, particularly histories. Added... I like loose tea and finding the proper teapot, with an internal sieve at the bottom of the spout is difficult these days. I end up buying vintage teapots on eBay....you have to inquire as to the sieve in the pot. One modern teapot that doesn't seem too bad,is rsvp bought on amazon.

Island of the Lost: Shipwrecked at the Edge of the World by Joan Druett. Available in kindle format. Very well written history of two ships' crews, wrecked on Auckland Islands, south of New Zealand, in the mid 19th century. Fascinating bit of history, and a heck of a story of how one crew succeeded in surviving, and a second crew, wrecked on the opposite side of the islands, fell apart and died, with only a few remaining. Camadarie and ingenuity count for a lot. A well done story. Tim

VT...thanks for the Gavin Lyall recommendation. Just started secret servant, very good, well written.
Also have started something entirely different... A book to carry me through a long winter and into spring most likely: Republics, Ancient and Modern, by Paul A. Rahe, a professor at Hillsdale. An examination of political philosophy in Greece, early modern Europe and the young American republic. Very dense, best taken about five pages or so at a time, but I like it very much. Not in print, the hardcover used runs about 40 on Amazon, and is a real 1200 page door stopper of a book. Wish it were in kindle so it would be easier to physically handle, but it's worth the tennis elbow.

Re: Warm and Quality Blanket Recommendations
Second the idea of military blankets. However, reenactors etc have driven up the cost of American army blankets and Swiss army blankets are out of sight. Be sure to avoid Rothko type military "style" blankets which are garbage. I got about a half dozen Dutch AABE military blankets off eBay before the price started going up on those. Incredible blankets, heavy, about twice the thickness of a u.s. Army blanket.
Brands that aren't in demand, but of very good quality, such as kenwood, are probably the best value. The reason for buying used,is that a new very high quality wood blanket is really expensive. And wool, if it's taken care of, does not deteriorate.

Look for a used wool blanket on eBay. Pick a quality brand that's in really good shape. It will likely be a bargain because wool blankets are not as popular now as comforters etc. Brands such as kenmore, van wyk, orrlaskan, American woolen mills, etc are excellent. I've bought about a dozen. Hudsons bay trapper blankets are usually overpriced. Tim

Very well done, very readable, one of the best business histories I have read in a long time. Never flew an airplane, but my first flight was in an old piper in the mid fifties. Probably not in print, I found it while scanning a library bookshelf. The Lost World of the Old Ones, by David Roberts, published this year. About the Indians of the ancient southwest, very readable, a good survey of current thinking on what happened to the various Indian cultures. Reads also much like an adventure story. Two recommendations. Ian Toll's Pacific Crucible is a very well written history of the Pacific war. I think I finally understood what the battle of coral sea was about, and how the code breakers at Pearl Harbor worked to set up the victory at midway.
Marc Morris has written some wonderful works on medieval England, on the Norman conquest and king Edward. His latest on King John and the Magna Carta is now available and I am really looking forward to it. I can recommend it without having even started it, based on just how good his two previous works were.

It concerns the Dreyfus Affair, which tore France apart in the late 19th century. Well written, and sticks very close to the actual history. Makes the culture war, as it were, in France understandable, and gave me some pause for reflection on our ongoing culture war.
Worth reading.

What is usually forgotten about the "great time to buy stock" is the reason why stocks were so cheap. No one, or very few to say the least, had the cash money. Bank accounts were frozen or had collapsed along with savings. See the book by Joseph Roth about living In the Great Depression.

Re: Fidelity Donor Advised Fund
My problem with these funds is what happens to the money after I die? I get to specify (request) how the money gets allocated during my lifetime, but once I pass on, can I have left a directive on allocating money to charities? My understanding is, no, and that the director of the DAF then will donate the money as it sees fit. To me, this means it will all go to something like United way, and not to the local charities, such as our library, SPCA, etc, that I support.

Re: Local Bogleheads Groups [Looking for Central NY Chapter]
Not to my knowledge. When bogleheads groups were first formed, some years ago, about four of us met at the now defunct borders bookstore at the carousel mall. No meetings since then. Tim

Creating new income stream
The "don't buy stuff" idea has been in the inter tubes news lately. Ann althouse has a nice take on it. She notes that when her sons were in college, she created a new income steam for herself by not buying stuff.

Re: Do Super wealthy have access to different investing vehi
While I am very happy with what I do have, if I had a sufficient sum I would own my own index fund, with one share, a very large share price, and an expense ratio infinitely close to nonexistent.

Re: Pepper Spray the Best Option for Personal Protection?
I've been down this road too many times debating gun confiscation and control with advocates who pretend to be unbiased and are simply trolling. Your list is extremely biased and the supposedly non biased sources are institutions dominated by left wing ideologues. Try reading people like Gary kleck and don Kates. I'll leave it at that.
And on the OT, pepper spray is not a bad idea. Tim
