Re: Moving to Texas - [Request for clothes, car window tint] recommendations
I'm in Louisiana, so similar, but more humid climate. Clothing will depend on the corporate culture of your company. Most everyone is going towards "business casual", a golf shirt made of any performance fabric is low maintenance and comfortable, cotton khakis, etc. I actually wear boots (polished) half of the time because I find them comfortable and functional. They also should last longer for the price than most "dress" shoes. And I guess get used to these stupid stereo types. I live in an area with over 7 million people, can't remember the last time I saw a cowboy hat or gun rack. x2 (though the Austin area is quite a bit smaller than 7 million). I've never seen a gun rack in ANY vehicle here, and I'm on the outskirts...

Re: Move 11 month Ally CD (1.5%) to Ally Savings (1.6%)?
The only thing that the No Penalty 11 Month Cd (currently) has to offer over the Savings account is that the rate is guaranteed.
In my opinion, which could be wrong and is worth less than what you are paying for it, we are in a rising interest rate environment. I would cancel the 11 month CD and put the funds in Savings if that is the only alternative being considered.

Highly dependent on your region.
My parents have tried plum trees, they were terrible because of the flowers and bugs they attracted.
Currently they have a lemon and a Satsuma (orange variety), we are southern so citrus does well. The lemon tree has some nasty thorns, not the most pleasant feeling to get poked by it.

I assume she was not physically hurt? If there is any suspicion that an injury occurred do not sign any settlement that includes personal injury (they should be different settlements anyway). Moving past that, once you sign over the title for the vehicle you should contact your insurance company and notify them that the vehicle has been SOLD and you are note immediately replacing it. It is not any of their business that the sale was to an insurance company, you just need it cancelled from the policy. Depending on your local laws and your policy particulars your wife may be covered while driving her friend's car either by your policy (as a listed driver) or her friend's policy. What would your opinion be for a house 2 feet above the FEMA line?
In 2016 my house took on 3 feet of water, it is 2 feet higher than the magical FEMA flood line. Yes, the record was shattered by 5 feet.
I did not have flood insurance.
In some ways it was easier to rebuild paying out of pocket, those with insurance had to wait for insurance companies to drag out the process of inspections and fight over if a contractor is required (not required in my state), etc.

Re: Learning to drive stick
After determining if you have the mechanical aptitude to understand what is happening between the engine and transmission, then I agree completely with the following: Honestly, the key to driving a manual is learning where the clutch engagement point is during the pedal travel. Every vehicle is slightly different but muscle memory will kick in shortly. Knowing when to shift; the pitch of the engine noise will make it obvious. It is a handy skill to have, and these days, a manual transmission in a vehicle is practically an anti-theft device all its own. One factor I think that makes learning to drive a manual transmission much easier is having an understanding of what is actually happening and why. I had a manual transmission for several veh...

Re: New car pickup today.
in theory... that is not an untrue statement but:
What is the purity of the nitrogen being pumped in to the tire?
Are they pumping out/ purging the ambient air that is in the tire when mounted?
As previously stated, the natural air you breath is already 78% nitrogen. What they are doing is not significant and is even less significant because modern vehicles have tire pressure monitors alerting you to a tire that has lost small amounts of pressure.
Any derived benefit is NOT worth the $200+ upsell on a new vehicle (or any upsell for that matter).

Re: New car pickup today.
I just bought a vehicle a week and a half ago.
They are now pushing "nitrogen filled tires".... you should call b.s. the air you breathe is 78% nitrogen. You are paying a couple hundred bucks for some fancy green valve stem cap.
They also wanted to sell the VIN etching. If your insurer offers a discount for this (not all do, so check), and it is significant enough to be worth the trouble then buy the kit on Amazon and do it yourself for about $20, don't pay several hundred dollars for this scam either.

Can you get the Executor of the Estate to give you an advance on the inheritance in the amount needed?
Or perhaps they can give you a low interest loan through the estate?
Another idea: if you have a vehicle with title in hand you can get a title loan.
0% Introductory APR on a credit card the charge the expenses?

Re: flood and earthquake insurance for house
My house is not in a flood zone (well, technically everything has a zone, mine is "Zone X").
My elevation was built to be 2 feet above the record flood.
In 2016 a sub-tropical low sat over my region and pounded us with rain.
The results were ~3 feet of water in my house.
Take a minute and look around to imagine how much of your house and contents is within that range.
Now imagine having to drag it all to the curb and figure out how to rebuild/ refurnish while being suddenly homeless.
Been there done that, without insurance. I now have flood insurance.
I do not have earthquake insurance. In my region it's not even offered. The soil consistency eats any seismic activity.

Title both of the cars to separate LLCs. Swap LLCs.
Actually, the best route might be to have an attorney familiar with contracts review both purchase contracts and find a solution.
Also, just because someone writes the check doesn't mean that they have their name on the title. I wrote the check for a substantial down payment on my wife's vehicle, but my name is no where on the title. Typically dealers don't care as long as they complete the sale.

Sell it now. Take the tax free capital gains.
If you are inclined to be a landlord you can go buy another rental with the proceeds (I doubt that you will, and this tells you that selling was the right choice for more reasons than just the tax free capital gains).
Paying off the student loans is a separate decision.

Re: Your favorite Florida beach??
We did Destin (area) for our honeymoon a few years back.
We actually stayed in Miramar Beach, which is a little less crowded than Destin proper, but connected seamlessly. Destin activities were a short car ride away, the free parking at the boardwalk in Destin was nice. There was an outlet mall nearby. Restaurants on the beach were available.
As for exactly where to stay, it all depends on what you desire and what you are willing to spend. There was some beach houses that were pretty cheap at the right time. We stayed in a resort across from the public beach (CHEAP). There are top notch resorts if you are willing to pay though. Beaches are beautiful, as is the water especially through polarized lenses (hence: The Emerald Coast).

Mine was easy. My local Clerk of Court office accepts them at multiple locations. They had all of the info on their website. They would do pictures and everything for a very reasonable fee, they didn't take checks for this service - cash or money order; or a credit card with an additional processing fee tacked on.
I filled out the application online following all instructions and had everything ready to go. They even did a cursory review to make sure that at least everything looked like it was filled out that was needed.

I went from a Nexus 5X -> Samsung S7 -> Essential PH1 -> Pixel 2
I loved the 5X, until it went in to the dreaded bootloop
The S7 was a nightmare. Defective out of the box restarting itself, Samsung eventually fixed it, but I never "loved" the phone. Battery life stunk.
In the interim with the S7 I did have a iPhone 7, it was very nice hardware, I just couldn't get used to the iOS environment.
I was excited about the PH1, bought it because we were switching carriers. It had touchscreen issues and would freeze up requiring a hard boot daily.
Now I have the Pixel 2 and I think I am just as satisfied as I was with the 5X, which says a lot.

It is interesting to me that people would opt out of a life insurance benefit. Dying seems like a major negative loss to me, and getting paid a huge sum of cash is a way to make a bad situation better. I would opt out if I were offered this product. I do not have any optional life insurance. For me it is a useless product at any cost. I am 39, I have no kids but I do have a wife. I have no debt and my assets include my house and healthy retirement accounts in addition to a pension. The only possible benefit would be for my wife to never have to work again. At her ripe age of 35 I am not really interested in providing that just because I am dead. My employer does provide a life insurance policy of something like $10K (so not taxable as impu...

1.) No. There is no reason to have your mother as an authorized user on your account. 2.) Get as much credit as you they can approve you for. Normally you do not get to ask for an initial limit, it is assigned. Later you can ask for increases, but if they are asking just tell them, "as much as I qualify for." 3.) This should not be your only card. You should look at having at least one other card from a different issuer. Here is what guides my answers: 1.) I was in a similar position when I first started college, within a year I had my own card. If you make an error with your mother as an authorized user then you both take the hit. If any cards have a "universal default" clause this could be an issue for a simple mistake...

There is a lot of cheap bright lights such as the one mentioned above.
I have found that those cheaper lights do not seem to last / have the durability I need.
I deer hunt and absolutely must have a working light when deep in the woods. I personally use a Surefire G2X Pro. It is extremely durable, used by a lot of law enforcement, has dual brightness control, uses CR123 batteries (10 year shelf life). I trust them enough to keep a spare in my vehicle, my wife's glovebox and by my nightstand - on top of the one that stays in my hunting bag. They aren't cheap, but if you want top quality it is an option.

My "Skin in the game" was this: I moved out from Mom and Dad's house. They gave me food just about every weekend when I visited. They told me that they would pay for my liability car insurance (on a car I bought) as long as I kept a reasonable driving record and a reasonable vehicle. With the above being said: In reality my parent's surprised me and paid my tuition every Fall. It was never promised. The also surprised me and paid for my books every Spring. This was also never promised. I had skin in the game. It still took me 5 years and one Summer class to get through my bachelor degree. I worked a warehouse job 30+ hours a week but I also learned how the "other half live" and learned a lot of life lessons along the way...

I use a spreadsheet to project accounts far in to the future. I even have my checking account projected as far as a year forward. I watch as things come through, usually right around expectations, and I know what the next step is and I just can't wait to complete it. I just want it done. I have no actionable advice though. I get stuck in a loop just reevaluating the plan. The good news is that I have accomplished a few major goals, the bad news is my next major goal is about 2 years in the future and it is going to be a painful wait

Different offices will have different policies. Recognizing that:
In my office it would be appropriate to inquire about the availability of flex schedules during the interview (yes, they are available); however a new hire is not eligible to participate in the flex schedule until after the 6 month probationary period, you would be 8-5. Asking at the end of the interview expresses your interest and at the end of your probationary period you can bring it up with your supervisor who will have access to other employee schedules and can evaluate the availability (based on necessary office coverage) for what you were wanting.

Wipes would work between showers and let you go longer between. Also consider showering differently. Quick rinse, turn the water off. Soap up. Turn the water on and rinse off. Showers are typically 2 gallons per minute or less. If you can rinse in 1-2 minutes, you're not using much of your 13 gallons. Most of the wasted water when people shower is that they leave the water running while soaping up, shampooing, etc. Toilets might be a bigger impact. 1.2-1.6 gallons per flush adds up. Consider the 'if it's yellow let it mellow' rule of thumb. This is all of the advise you need. I have a remote hunting camp that we have to conserve water at and above is pretty much how it works. Shower as desired, but do it mindfully. Just wet your body first...

Perhaps move forward with your plan to list FSBO, if you receive an offer then request that they complete a simple survey before you make a decision. That survey would include the question: Where and when did you first learn about this home being available?
Require a signature on that survey. Done. You have now the information you need. If they learned about it through the Realtor's efforts then do not accept a price that allows for you to pay the appropriate commissions.
... accepting two different prices based on that is absurd, but solves the problem. A much easier answer is to just wait out the 90 days.

The best deal will only include one or two sizes in fine print, if your car uses that size it can be like hitting the lottery (not quite, but almost). The original poster obviously does not see the value of the house in the ideal location. People buying the house (the competition that sets the market rate) are either willing to tolerate the possible inadequacies of the home or are willing to invest even more in ensuring the proper upgrades are in place. If you are not willing / can not afford to do that the you are unwilling/ can't afford to live there. It's simple.

Or were the outlets added willy-nilly by someone in the past? If you don't know how to figure that out, research it and learn. Much like investing, you can learn to do it yourself or pay someone to handle it for you. To directly answer your question: Map out your breaker panel to each ending to verify the breaker (and gauge wire going in it). Pull the outlet cover and look at the wires on the back of the outlet and see what gauge they are. This will answer your question. It is not difficult, but if you are electrically ignorant you will have to take some time to learn about wir...

Re: ID theft and check cashing fraud
You may want to contact the DMV to get a record of all vehicles registered to his name. You certainly don't want to start dealing with this person getting traffic tickets from speed/redlight/toll cameras or dealing with hit and run reports etc. linked back to him.madbrain wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2018 3:19 pm CarMax sent him certified mail claiming they found no evidence of identity theft and asking him to sign an affidavit. The paperwork included the last 4 numbers of 2 VINs for a contract supposedly signed on 1/6. So, it would appear the thief may actually have financed 2 cars in his name, contrary to what they told him when he first called. Since he returned the affidavit, CarMax refuses to talk to him about it.
It doesn't seem like this is such an easy fight, so far.

Looks like it is only for IRAs. I have no interest at this time to hold IRA funds in a CD.

Re: Lawn service etiquette
The information below is my opinion, but keep in mind I have never paid for such a service and do my own lawn care. What does your contract say? I am assuming there is no formal contract: I would definitely have a conversation about it to share your concerns. Be careful to not put them on the defensive, but make sure they know that this caught you by surprise. Tell them that while you are pleased with the quality of the work and not opposed to paying as billed, you would like to setup a mechanism to approve any future work that will exceed "normal weekly visits". That may be as informal as an email suggesting a service with a quote. Things like the need to add pine straw don't occur overnight and takes planning on their part to ac...

Re: Appliance Install Issues
The microwave draws too much power to put it on a partially used 15 amp kitchen line. Actually National Electric Code doesn't permit outlets do be 15 amps in a kitchen (or bathroom), it should be a 20 amp circuit. It draws too much power to leave it plugged into the refrigerator circuit. Correct. Every major kitchen appliance should be on a dedicated 20 amp circuit. Fridge, Nuke box, dish-rinser... But what to do is the question? Call an electrician. Let him (or her) evaluate the situation and give you options (multiple should be presented, although some may not be palatable). Be up front that you are willing to pay for the consultation even if the advise results in a safe solution that requires no real work from the electrician. The other...

Re: Keeping a checkbook register
I keep a Google Spreadsheet (Google Sheets) that functions as my "checkbook register". There is a tab for each of my accounts that looks pretty much exactly like a classic register. I start a new tab every year to avoid clutter and hide the prior year tab. Looking now I have been doing this since 2009. I also hide lines from two months prior and older, just to reference the immediate prior month and current, then I fill out the rest of the year to project out cashflow. My expenses and income are fairly consistent. I can easily use sort to rearrange if the dates move and and/remove lines as needed. By having it in Google Sheets / in the cloud I can access it from my home computer, work computer or even my mobile phone. I even have ...

Re: Progressive Insurance
I had Progressive for quite a while. I had several instances over the years where I had to deal with them and it was borderline pleasant to deal with them. They treated me and my problem like it was the most important thing they had to do. They were on friendly terms with the local car rental office and the local body shop which made it a breeze to get my claim resolved. I only left Progressive when they were suddenly undercut (by 1/2) on rates by Geico. After several years no one can touch Geico's rates for me, but I would certainly be willing to go back to Progressive if their rates were close. If you do go with them, memorize your log in and sign in when they have a new comunication. You know what you might find. They won’t highlight urg...

Re: State Farm Insurance, Time to Leave
For the original question: Check them all directly and check with an independent agent. My independent agent was able to get me a better rate through Progressive than I could get directly. They also know who is giving the best rates to a person in your particular position (lately...). They have access to way more companies than you. I would also recommend a GOOD independent agent. Mine has really helped me over the years.[\quote] I could not agree more with this statement. The theory is that a captive company can't give you options. If you tell a State Farm agent that their policy is not competitive, what are they going to do? Tell you about the cheaper Progressive policy? I don't think so. An independent can and will shop around. They migh...

Re: CPA: The best profession if you want to make the most money + keep the most money?
Do something that you are passionate about and that interests you. I have a degree in Accounting. They changed the requisites to sit for the CPA right before I was eligible. Moving the finish line on me like that aggravated me to the point that I didn't even bother (I need another 15 hrs., of which I think it is 2-3 courses specifically). I'm not that interested. A CPA is a nice and can open certain doors, but my degree opened plenty enough and a CPA wouldn't help me in my career path (government accounting). On the side - my Accounting degree does give me an edge to more easily understand the concepts of taxation and personal investing, which in turn saves me considerable money. I do not pretend that this can not be done with someone witho...

Re: Inexpensive way to ship heavy item...
One option is, if the seller is willing to pick the item up locally instead of doorstep delivery, you can ship by Greyhound bus.
Greyhound busses accept packages/ small freight and can ship from any terminal to another. It is not a fast process and the recipient will have to go to their local terminal to pick the package up, but it is usually relatively cheap even for heavy packages. We used to ship ductile iron (HEAVY) pipe fittings like this all the time.

Re: Negotiating used car - Toyota Highlander
I have been getting that same result from multiple dealers.
I have followed up with a phone call and visited the dealer. They didn't offer quite enough for my trade and refused to budge on the price from what was listed online. The price "on the lot" window sticker was about $2,000 more.
This is looking at a used Tacoma.
They even followed up with a higher offer for my trade by email, but still would not budge on the online price.
I am kind of glad, after looking some more I think I prefer the Colorado, but might just keep my full sized truck in the end.

Re: Discover Card Change in Terms
I closed my Discover card earlier this year because of a dispute with an Amazon 3rd part seller that Discover just did not seem to get a grip on what happened. Their "fraud protection" protected and perpetuated the fraudster. I want nothing to do with a company that brags on their fraud protection and customer service and treats me how they did. I had a Discover Card for about two decades. Credit is a convenience for me, they need me much more than I need them.

Re: Buying a Home in a 500 year Flood Plain
I would buy the house, purchasing flood insurance would be a toss up. The best rating you can have is a "500 yr floodplain". Most that would fit in that category have either not had a flood determination or not paid attention to it because they were just told "flood insurance is not required". https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=4&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwigyL2cupjXAhUj5YMKHUC1AYoQFgg4MAM&url=https%3A%2F%2Fefotg.sc.egov.usda.gov%2Freferences%2Fpublic%2FNM%2FFEMA_FLD_HAZ_guide.pdf&usg=AOvVaw3JN6xWslf5lfZL4R2FTX-g There is a huge difference in "flash floods" and flooding that can occur due to elevation. Your data set includes both, which is good. ...

Re: Pay off the car or not?
This statement tells me you need to take a step back and re-think how you spend money. YOU ALREADY SPENT THIS MONEY. Any time you finance something you are spending money. You went to someone, borrowed money, then turned around and spent it. Done. At this point you are enslaved to the lender by your promise to pay them back with future earnings. By delaying that pay back you are only prolonging your agony.
I am sorry if that sounded harsh. I am not trying to be mean. I am only trying to give you something to think about as you move forward in life making purchases.

Re: Any FL residents with a dash-cam?
I had an instance where another driver thought that the rules of physics didn't apply to her and that her vehicle and my vehicle could be in the same place at the same time. She merged into my front end with her rear quarter panel. I had video for my defense when she claimed I came in to her lane.
I have caught dramatic collisions including an side impact resulting in an SUV becoming air born and landing on it's roof.
I have video of plenty of drivers running red lights with near misses, I fear one day that I might have to prove my status as I entered an intersection. The video won't lie and insurance companies tend to settle matters quicker when they know your claim is a slam dunk with video evidence.

Re: Any FL residents with a dash-cam?
I have a A119 Capacitor type model and also recommend it.
The A119 has been copied by many Chinese companies. Some are better than others, so make sure to read reviews on the particular brand.
Make sure you are looking at Capacitor models and not the battery versions. They look the same and are easily mixed up.
I also sprang for the hardwire kit and connected it to an ignition on power source, it automatically starts up when I start my vehicle and shuts down when I turn it off.
Overall I can't complain. Mine seems to handle extreme heat (S. Louisiana) just fine.
