Re: VMFXX or VUSXX for NC resident

I would be very surprised if a state tax in the 4%'s would make the Treasury fund a better return.
My state rate is over 9% and VMRXX / VMFXX is still the better after tax return.
Yields vary all of the time, so you would need to check in periodically.

Re: new home purchase advice... in over my head?

it seems you need to find a way to put more money down to improve the cash flow / mortgage payments for a million dollar purchase.

Kids get more expensive as they age. Vehicles need replacing. You will want to have space in the budget for those things without getting stressed out and feeling house-poor.

Increase the rental rent to help pay mortgage on new house?
Sell the rental and put that equity to lower your new mortgage?
Use inheritance cash to pay for the pool?
Sell your blue-chips for additional down payment?

Buying more leverage real estate in addition to your own highly leveraged home is going to take on risk. If housing market or rents drop, you will be left without a grip on your lever.

CAN I and SHOULD I are two different things...

I would re-check on the vanguard website, because they do. I have accounts at both VG & FIDO.
Vanguard will set up recurring withdrawals for any amount you want per month/quarter/etc.
Find 'automatic transactions' and then click to the sell tab (default is 'buy').

If your bill-pay total is fairly predictable, and you don't mind a cash cushion in your CU, this would be straight-forward without transferring everything to Fidelity.

Re: Reduce company stock holdings? Currently 20% of net worth, future rebuy not guaranteed

I know a number of people who worked at start ups and bought stock in their private employer thinking they would cash in big-time when they were acquired. Most broke even , some lost and only 1 made better than 5% annual return (not counting opportunity cost of the tied up cash).

Acquiring companies drive a hard bargain and internally generated sale growth predictions are just predictions.

my vote would be to sell all of it.

for those perusing, and possibly wondering why a teen would need a card -- many high schools have gone '100% cashless' for tickets and concessions at their events/games. It's not like they're spending a bunch of money, they just won't take cash -- at all. The days of handing your kid a $10 or $20 for the Friday night football game are over.

You are indeed overthinking this by trying to separate them into buckets of what are essentially the same low/zero-risk investments. All of it is almost certain to barely match inflation.

There wouldn't be much difference having 100% of it in VUSXX or 100% of it in BIL, other than some minor NAV fluctuation for the fund/etf.

Mom could gift it all into a Trust managed by you and your sisters for her future benefit, including optional payments for your nurse siblings to receive for her in-home care. If nursing homes are out of the question, the medicare look-back period is moot.

You would need to see a lawyer to set it up, but then the assets could be managed by her boglehead children and not EJ.

In addition, you could also elect to invest a six-figure amount with your aunt to attempt to keep the peace within the family and give mom a reason to drive into town to visit her sister over coffee. Everybody wins.

If you hold until maturity, you get your money back with the promised interest. That's it. Don't worry about what the Fed will do.
I would pick a term in the "for sure" zone, rather than the "probably" zone. Re-evaluate when it matures.
Likely that money markets will still be yielding something reasonable in 4-6 months, so you can always stash it there upon maturity.

if we are all going somewhere together, we take the Expedition, due to 3rd row space.

The point of accumulating distributions and investing them in the lagging funds is to avoid needlessly generating taxable events when you re-balance.

Wash sale is a purchase <30d before OR after a sale for loss. Under this rule, you cannot claim the loss for tax purposes.

You have purchases on Feb 20 and ~May 1. There would be a window where you could sell in late March; however, you state you are forbidden from transactions during this period. https://www.investopedia.com/terms/w/washsalerule.asp

It is up to you if the cap-loss deduction against gains is worth it in terms of dollars, or you just want to sell the shares and get out for whatever reasons and forego the tax benefits of taking the loss in June.

At some point in the future you will want to start using some of that money to improve your life and the is what I want to talk about. Currently your $2.5 million at a 3% withdrawal rate should cover $75k/yr in spending probably for the rest of your life. If you are wise on how you utilize those funds, that value can grow and so can your spending. To be honest, I think the intent is good but the advice is bad. 3% is probably too high for a perpetual withdrawal (which, effectively, for a 22 year old is that). And it encourages the original poster to use up a little of this nest egg along the way. To perhaps have an extra bedroom or drive a Lexus instead of a Toyota. It is rationalized because the market participants price those shares at those values, in what is believed to be an efficient market. Cap-weighted large cap indexes (Us & Foreign) all have this same problem, if you view it as a problem.

Reducing bubble risk is one reason why slice & dicers tilt away from Large Growth and seek out asset classes with low correlation.
