Re: French-Fama 2x3, 10x10, mid-caps... Help?
I've been using the French-Fama data library for various projects, but er, it is a tad nebulous. http://mba.tuck.dartmouth.edu/pages/faculty/ken.french/data_library.html Thanks to a bit of advice the good Dr Bernstein posted a while ago, I figured out how to use the "6 Portfolios Formed on Size and Book-to-Market (2 x 3)", and infer the SG, SB, SV, LG, LB, LV historical returns. Now why wouldn't this matrix be 3x3 and include mid-caps, I don't know... Here is WB's post, for reference: https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2520&start=500#p1767160 So I went to the 10x10 matrix. Assuming that I could start from each of those deciles, and easily figure out how to assemble them in a 3x3 matrix of sorts, hence fill the g...

Re: What is the best way to purchase Iphone?
So I’m a Verizon customer paying $150/month for 2 lines. I get 6GB of data plus unlimited talk/text. I’m going to upgrade my phone shortly and I had assumed that the Edge program just takes the cost of the phone and divides it over 24 payments. The guy at the Verizon store told me that Verizon gives you some kind of credit towards the phone when you sign up, so the sum of the payments is lower than the cost of the phone. As I’m looking at it, that doesn’t seem to be the case at all so I’m not sure how this new program is better than the old one? I’m considering just buying the new Iphone through Apple and then being able to get the new AppleCare included at no cost, which would cover some accidental damage and problems with the phone. My c...

Re: I'd rather stick than go to cash, but.
Re-doing this post thanks to good advice to do so. I'm looking for reassurance that my investment position makes sense from a downside perspective. I'm retired and if the bottom falls out of the market, my time horizon may be inadequate for recovery. Emergency funds: probably enough for 2.5 years, when I'll have to take RMD Debt: none, and own my own home Tax filing status: now single, tax bracket 28%? Investments: everything now in VSCGX, 60/40 bonds to stocks and well diversified Yield I'll need annual in retirement starting in 2 years: $35 - 40K Question: made this transfer from mutual funds recently and have watched it plunge over 3 weeks to under $900K. I thought hard about the allocation of 60/40, bonds to stocks, and am satisfied wi...

Re: Here We Go Again: SWR 2.5% or 5.5%?
Is it a new era? Must high stock and bond valuations (low interest rates) require us to lower our SWR to 2.5%? That's what I read in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette this morning: http://www.post-gazette.com/business/money/2016/01/19/For-today-s-retirees-4-percent-rule-may-no-longer-work/stories/201601150089 "Morningstar Investment Management in Chicago found in a 2013 study that if bond rates remained at these low levels, retirees stood a 50 percent chance of running out of money in 20 years if they stuck to the 4 percent withdrawal rule. That’s assuming they had a portfolio of 60 percent bonds and 40 percent stocks. Morningstar found if retirees started with an initial withdrawal rate of around 2.5 percent, it would raise the odds of mak...

Re: How Am I Doing? 18 Years of Data
OK, how am I doing? In 1997, I finally understood that you can't time markets and pick stocks. Since then, I've had an indexed (mostly Vanguard) portfolio that was originally 60/40 and is now 52/48. I'm 56 years old and will let it drift as low as 50/50 if markets and new money make that happen. In other words, I will only buy stocks if my stock percentage goes below 50%. I have a big portfolio relative to my spending...I could live well on a 2% SWR today. But will continue to be in accumulation until age 65. My overall average annual return has been 6.36%. I've kept good records and was careful to adjust for new money and occasional withdrawals. 6.36% is actual investment return. Part of me feels like a chump...all that time and I've only...

Re: Serta iComfort / Tempurpedic - Buying a Mattress
Hi All, Did some searching and it seems the majority of Bogleheads are sleeping on Serta iComfort or Tempurpedic mattresses. My DW and I have never spent over $1k on a mattress so we're treading carefully. A few questions for those of you on latex/foam mattresses. We're planning to get a new bed because my DW has trouble sleeping, backaches, and when she's pregnant can't get comfortable. I can sleep on anything :happy Why did you pick Serta iComfort over Tempurpedic or Tempurpedic over iComfort? Did you spend the extra money and purchase the adjustable foundation/box spring? Are you happy you did? Any pitfalls you've identified after sleeping on the iComfort / Tempurpedic? Have you experienced issues with off-gassing, heat retention, restr...

Sharing Advice from meeting with High Level Vanguard Advisor Unread postby dcarste » Fri Jan 08, 2016 12:16 pm Thought I would share the experience we (my dad and I) had with a meeting with a high level institutional advisor. My dad got about a 1 hour meeting for free because of the value of his accounts. Dad is 65, retired. Has soc security, pension, and the assets at Vanguard. Advisor recommendations: 1. 50% split between Stocks and Bonds. Helps with investor panic selling and captures a good amount of future stock market returns. Bond portion smooths out volitility - avoiding panic selling and sabotaging investor returns. 2. Of the equity portion, split 70% US total stock index, 30% Total Int'l Index 3. Of the bond portion, again a 70% s...

I have purchased frames and lenses at Costco and liked a particular frame.
Did you ask if ANOTHER location of Costco might have your frame on display that you could buy? Is another Costco location nearby for you to just drive to and check?
Costco is very cooperative about calling around to help customers out. Maybe you could find someone in Optical or Customer Service. Costco Kirkland frames have the information printed on the inside of the frame to identify the frame in case you want to order the identical one. I really liked one frame and they were able to get me a display frame.

I'm interested in anyone's experience with these companies. I know that all premiums will increase on these attained-age policies, but I was told by someone that the plan G rates do not increase as much as Plan F. Also, a Blue Cross rep I spoke with here in NC said you can switch plans without medical underwriting. That's a plus,...
