Re: Changing Old Truck to Full Synthetic Oil?
I switched mid-life of a vehicle to synthetic and it leaked like a sieve, but that was around thirty years ago or more when Mobil 1 just about first came out. The posts with more recent experiences are much better indicators. One thought would be to use a high-mileage semi-synthetic as a migration step. See how it goes oil change #1. If it works well, maybe blend your own mix with a 3:2 synthetic to non ratio #2. If that works well go to full synthetic. Anecdotally, I used to load a Ford Tempo 4 cylinder (essentially a Ranger with a car body) to the gills and full roof rack for long-distance camping trips. I put in 4 quarts of Castrol 0-50 full synthetic and 1 quart of Castrol straight 30 weight for those trips and felt I could drive that ...

In the frequency of repair surveys in Consumer Reports, Toyotas usually fare among the best while Chryslers usually fare among the worst. Being acquired by Fiat has only further degraded the quality of Chrysler products. If you REALLY want to drive a Chrysler, just rent one. It will be fairly new and thus unlikely to have problems. If your rental Chrysler does have problems, it's the rental car company's responsibility to find a replacement and/or get it fixed, not yours.

It is incredibly dangerous out there today due to distracted drivers, and motorcyclists are extremely vulnerable. I got hit by a deer going 65 mph and suffered some serious injuries, and I was wearing all the safety gear. Fortunately they were able to rebuild me and I am pretty much back to normal today. I ride a little here and there, but nothing like before. Trust me. The pleasure of riding does not offset the pain of serious injury.

Re: Trading a BMW for a Toyota
Usually once you already own a car, the most cost-effective thing is to just keep that vehicle. If you anticipate very high maintenance costs (possible w bmw), then it might be worth making the swap. In terms of your next car - I would shop new camrys before choosing used. Used car prices are sky high and Toyota’s tend to depreciate very little. Also, sedans are not selling well, so you likely could get incentives/significant discounts if you aggressively shop around and negotiate with multiple Dealers. Also check out car max, vroom, carvana when looking to get a sense of what the current car is worth. I've owned both BMWs and Toyotas. NO comparison on maint/repair costs and the need for repairs. Toyotas are amazing really. Ive had 2 Prius...

I would see a gain if you got out of the BMW for out-of-pocket cost of $5K (sell BMW for $25K and payoff $30K loan with $5K cash) and bought a replacement used vehicle with $10K (or less) cash. My guess is that you don't have $15K laying around, that's one of the main reasons people get stuck with vehicle financing. Due to the front-loading of interest the loan will often exceed the vehicle value relatively quickly.
The "gain" will be in the maintenance and repair costs of keeping an older BMW running. I know from experience. A Toyota is bullet proof.

I was with the USPS for 38 years. it is a very complex business model, quasi governmental and yet expected to perform like a business, but without freedom to take actions without intense oversight from Congress. Over 600,000 employees, multiple labor unions, 40,000 retail units, the largest civilian vehicle fleet in the country, hundreds or thousands of processing plants , Congress watching every move, etc. It takes an entire career to learn the organization. Most Postmaster Generals in recent years came up in the system from the lowest levels (I began unloading trucks). Now, the new PMG, who has zero experience, has stumbled into a quagmire by making radical changes that will not support efficiency. We should all expect major problems.

So, with the recent market volatility, and extra time on my hands working from home, I've found myself doing a lot more exchanges than usual. Always keeping roughly to my 70/30 allocation, but doing "opportunistic" rebalancing. Buying on Really Bad Days, and selling on Really Good Days. Yesterday, I exchanged $100K in bonds for S&P 500 at -7%; today, the market appears likely to close up around +3% (but it is still early in the day). I'll exchange back again at the end of the day to bonds, and net a $3,000 gain for a few mouse clicks. Funds are within a 401K with no trading costs and no frequent trade restrictions. If the market had continued to go down, I'd continue to hold, for years, if necessary. What am I missing? Is the...

I have got a little investment (less than 100k) in P2P in the Uk where I live; I hardly ever watch it but at this time I get messages from the company Zopa explaining that many borrowers will be late with repayments due to the current situation. Zopa had navigated the 2008 crisis rather well, so I am not too worried. I know that Larry Swedroe recommended P2P investments so I am wandering whether there are many Bogleheads who have invested in these products and if so how they are reacting? Selling now one would incur losses since interests have gone up; besides these loans are probably not very liquid. Any thoughts/experiences you want to share?
