Re: Does anyone invest in canned goods, ammo, etc. .

My ex-boyfriend gave me the Y2K stash that his ex-wife had purchased when they were married (I know, an ex of an ex). It's a lot of canned dry ingredients, such as flour, rice, beans, and powdered milk. That was in 2007 and I'm still eating my way through the pile. I've donated the foods I do not use to the local soup kitchen and feed the wheat berries to my goats (during winter blizzards when they can't get out and forage). I just found out a way to make Greek yogurt from powdered milk, so will try that. I'd have to have a lot of water and cooking heat to utilize any of this during a major event, so I'm not sure how useful it is. My wood stove came in handy during a big blizzard that took a couple of weeks to clear out. I was able to melt ...

Re: What was your mid-life crisis

I guess I'm having mine right now. I no longer want to stay in my home and am looking to sell and downsize. I love the place, it's a mini-ranch with a nice setting and terrific views, but the upkeep and chores are no longer fun and I'd rather be on my skis or bicycles or just about anywhere else. If I had my druthers, I'd go back to being a ski bum (in a nice upscale condo, of course!).

Re: Should We Stock Up On Food Now?

About three years ago, I "inherited" some Y2K canned dried food from a boyfriend. I gave the high-fructose sugar items and fake items (powdered cheese) to a local charity kitchen. I fed the large quantity of unground wheat to my horses and goats. I have found that I still consistently use the oatmeal, dried beans, dehydrated potatoes (shredded potatoes, diced potatoes), and the rice in various recipes. I occasionally use the dried fruit (apples and peaches are best) for desserts and in muffins. I also have used the cornmeal, flour, salt, baking soda (cooking and cleaning), baking powder, powdered eggs (in lieu of fresh eggs in recipes), and powdered tomato (great substitute for tomato paste and to enrich stews and soups). I tried,...
