Thanks Paul - The next version has the corrections. I have added Gold as well.Paul Douglas Boyer wrote:Simba, in your spreadsheet, here are some corrections:

Cell SP-85-08!C36 should read "=RATE(Portfolio!$K...
Column P in SP-85-08 incorrectly points to 72 data.
Also,
I have the values for gold in the Google version of the spreadsheet at:

I added a returns vs risk chart for 1972 - 2008
and compared against Harry Browne, Coffeehouse, Scott Burns Four Square, and all of the IFA Index Portfolios there.

Vanguard CEO - Teamwork, Then and Now
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/01/jobs/01boss.html - By William McNabb
But Jack Brennan, who was then the C.F.O. (he later became C.E.O.), talked about what kind of company Vanguard would become. I liked his vision and his Midwestern values. It was a whole different perspective compared with what I had found in New York. I hoped that the Vanguard people would offer me the job, and they did.
Rowing is analogous to business. The sport attracts driven, competitive people, but team members must be willing to let their egos be subservient to the boat.
It’s the same in business, where a company can accomplish so much more if everyone works together.

I use the Avg-Avg for the CPI-U numbers.Leif Eriksen wrote:Not sure about your CPI-U numbers. Are you using the All City Average? The spreadsheet reports 3.84 for 2008. U.S. Department Of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 0.1 for Dec/Dec 2008. See the following link

CPI-U for 2008= (Annual Avg for 2008 - Annual Avg for 2007)/(Annual Avg for 2007)

Re: Simba Spreadsheet: Nominal and Real
What does nominal and real mean or MAR? This is a truly amazing piece of work. Webfoot - MAR (Minimum acceptable Return) [in the spreadsheet] is used in calculating Sortino Ratio . which measures the risk-adjusted returns of a portfolio. The Sortino ratio is similar to the Sharpe ratio, except it uses downside deviation for the denominator instead of standard deviation. Sortino Ratio S = {R-T}/{DR} where R=portfolio return T = target or required rate of return (T was originally known as the minimum acceptable return, or MAR) DR=downside risk. In the earlier revisions of the spreadsheets, I was using the average of T-Bills for calculating the Sortino Ratio. But decided to use a "modifiable" parameter so one can change the target R...

As I've said numerous times, use this ONLY for entertainment purposes. Do not alter your AA based on historical returns.
As Paul says - "Don't chase the ghosts of past returns"
Having said that the I've updated the spreadsheet.
Those interested can download the Excel Spreadsheet [rev7f] or the OpenOffice version [rev7f]
The returns for the single portfolio should now match the returns from the comparison section.

Re: Excel Experts - Help on my Performance Tracking SS
I was following this conversation with interest, because I have the same problem with my madsinger monthly portfolio. The way I "solved" the problem (which is no great solution) is to "leave space" for future rows to be added, and have "bottom" row absolute and not moved. For example, if you have four quarterly returns of 2%, -1%, 3%, -2%, and you're going to track this for a few years: A B 1 2% =1+A1 2 -1% =1+A2 3 3% =1+A3 4 -2% =1+A4 5 =1+A5 6 =1+A6 7 =1+A7 8 =1+A8 9 =1+A9 10 =1+A10 11 =1+A11 12 =1+A12 13 =1+A13 14 =1+A14 15 =1+A15 16 =1+A16 17 =1+A17 18 =1+A18 19 =1+A19 20 =1+A20 21 22 =PRODUCT(B1:B20)-1 So, in my case I "hide" the rows 5-20, and B22 has the cumulative return. When I add new data,...

Thanks Simba - got it this time! I know adding the option to subtract appropriate ER's from the pre-fund inception data must have taken quite a bit of effort. Cb 8) Thanks Cb - it did take a bit. The formula in the "Compare 5 portfolios" section appear to be slightly different from the main section. For example: 1972-2007 TSM = 10.96/17.24 Compare 5 TSM = 11.08/17.25 1985-2007 TSM = 12.22/16.03 Compare 5 TSM = 12.29/15.69 The comparison section does not deduct the ER's. Hence the difference. Back to the drawing board. I am thinking it may be easier to just update the data and deduct the ERs from the index returns. The next question would - how much should I deduct? Obviously the ERs back in 70's and 80's were higher. The current ...

Vanguard's Rearguard Action - Forbes article
Forbes had this articled titled - Vanguard's Rearguard Action John Bogle, founder of the Vanguard Group and one of the 20th century's great innovators in finance, made a colossal mistake 17 years ago. He sent Nathan Most packing. Most, then a 77-year-old product developer for the American Stock Exchange, had an innovative idea of his own: the exchange-traded index fund. Investors would have shares in a fixed portfolio, just like the one held by the Vanguard S&P 500 fund, but would trade these shares as if they were Microsoft stock. They could buy and sell the index fund all day long, they could sell the fund short, and they could borrow against the position. Shares of the tradable index fund would be created or extinguished in response ...

Thanks folks for all the wonderful comments.
I know most of the regular readers know that the idea behind the spreadsheet is not for optimization or to change asset allocation based on backtested results. For the newcomers to the site, this was a fun project and please treat it as such.
I've updated the SS with the 2007 returns (Yet to update data for BRSIX, PCRIX and the Inflation data[CPI-U])
You can download the Excel Spreadsheet [rev7b] and OpenOffice version [rev7b]
I have removed the charts/graphs from the OO version (for now). If anyone knows how to convert the Excel macros to be compatible with OO, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks and Best Regards,
Simba
Edit: My apologies, the file I uploaded was an older version.

Final figures for 2007 have not yet been compiled, but American Funds – part of Capital Group – is believed to have brought in about $90bn, falling just short of Vanguard’s tally.

VEU or VFWIX
Tom,
You can Calculate and compare costs for Vanguard ETFs and mutual funds.
If you are making a lumpsum, the ETF definitely has advantages
- No .25% purchase fee
- .25% ER vs .40% for the VFWIX
Are you planning to sell the current holdings you have (DODFX/VGTSX/VWO)? If so you may want to consider the tax consequences (You probably are, just throwing it out there).
Best Regards,
Simba

VG overview
Jerry/Paul,
I don't believe (IMO) this document was meant for the general public. If you look at the end of the slide, it was presented to the Wisconsin ETF (Employee Trust Funds) board.
Do you think I should add this link to the Reference Library?

Simba

With current assets upwards of 1 Trillion, it amounts to more than 11 billion in savings passed on.• Vanguard’s current cost advantage is 1.13%.
• One hundred thirteen basis points on $816.1 billion in mutual fund assets* under management translates into approximately $9.2 billion in savings passed on to Vanguard shareholders.
Amen to that!Navigator wrote:I am so pleased to trust my money to Vanguard.

401K limits
The contribution limits for 2007 (Ditto for 2008) are:
401k Contribution Limit: $15,500
Catch-Up Contribution Limit (only for those over 50 years old): $5,000
This does NOT include the matching contribution from your company.
So if you are over 50 then you can contribute upto 20,500 (excluding your company's contribution).
Edit: Thanks to Profokiev for correcting the total (15,500+5000=20,500 and not 16,500

Thanks Brad
Brad,
First of all thank you for the wonderful effort you put in providing these numbers.
I was setting up a spreadsheet to add some more portfolios and was cross-checking the numbers to ensure there were no errors in the formula I was using. Since my numbers didn't match yours I wanted to ensure I was doing it correctly. I never doubted your results.
From your reports I couldn't tell what returns you were using and I assumed I was using the wrong formula/returns.
As it turned out both of used a couple of wrong returns
Thanks again for your help and keep up the good work.
Best Regards,
Simba
