The Hall tax in TN is being phased out at a rate of 1% per year and in 2022 TN will join the few other states that have no personal income tax at all.

Re: Can/Should early retiree avoid ACA tax credits?

I don't make the rules but I play by them. Our ACA plan for the past 3 years has cost us $0.00 per month and I've funded our HSAs to the max. (same BC/BS plan (Bronze S07) the last 3 years)

It helps that we've been blessed with good health and very, very seldom go to the doctor. I think between my wife and myself we met around $500 towards our deductible this year.

Lake Michigan Credit Union offers a free HSA that pays 1% for balances of $5k+. https://www.lmcu.org/banking/savings/savings_hsa.aspx

Not a super-high rate but 100% free and easy-peasy. I transferred our HSAs from HSA Administrators over a year ago and it was painless.

Re: Extended warranty on 2018 Outback

No No No.....Never buy an extended warranty. Worked in the industry for a bit many years ago and we were always told to push these products. But if you are thinking about it that is a decent price. Having spent almost my entire career in the ground transportation business I'd add all they are is an additional profit center for dealers. OTOH, today's cars are chock full of sensors and electronics which can get pretty pricey to get into if something hiccups and $1375 for four additional years is simply too inexpensive to walk away from. Put it on a 2% cash back credit card and forgetaboutit. Yeah, this is the way I'm leaning I think. This car is more of a computer than an automobile and I'd suspect repairing/replacing any of the electronics ...

Extended warranty on 2018 Outback

Mulling this over and interested in feedback.

I purchased a 2018 Outback 3.6R Limited with EyeSight and cold weather package #1 last week. Out the door price was 38,180. The car comes with the usual 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty. We're not car people so we expect to have this car for 10+ years.

I can buy a Subaru backed, 7 year, 100,000 mile warranty with $100 deductible for $1375 - this warranty basically extends the factory warranty for 4 extra years and 64,000 miles (with a $100 deductible per event).

I've called various dealers and the price for this warranty ranges from the low of $1375 to north of $2000 so $1375 seems to be as low as I'm going to get.

Question: Would you buy the extended warranty?

One of the best and least talked about online security options is the ability to "Restrict account access from unrecognized devices".

Upside: Only the devices you've logged into Vanguard with can get in.

Downside: If your recognized device becomes unrecognized (deleting cookies, device dies...) you can't get back in - so you'd need a backup recognized device.

As for me, I save receipts for things that are "receipt worthy" - items I may need to return, gifts the recipient might want to return, service work on home/car/etc, and items I deem expensive but if I buy a coke and a Snickers and insert my card into the chip reader - no... I don't get a receipt.

Small CU with 3.04%+ 72 month CD (Tennessee)

Of interest to very few due to limited scope but wanted to announce anyway. Appalachian Community FCU http://www.myacfcu.org/Rates has a 72 month add-on certificate with a 3.04% APY.

You can get 0.10% bumps like so:

Bump 1: Add a free checking account with estatements
Bump 2: Direct Deposit
Bump 3. Use bill pay with checking account
Bump 4: Jumbo CD (over $100k).
Bump 5: Have a loan
Bump 6: Get their VISA

Max bump = 0.50%

I left there this morning with 1 certificate earning 3.44% APY and opened 2 others earning 3.34%.

EWP: 365 days interest

I particularly like the add-on aspect as my Penfed 3% certificates will be maturing in 18 months or so and I can roll them into these.

We haven't experienced a single problem with DTVN but I follow a DTVN subreddit and it is clear that there were/are some issues with the new service but also reports are becoming fewer and they seem to be working through the problems.

I won't be renewing Vue. Having said that, the great thing about all these streaming services is that they can be stopped and started via the click of a mouse. Can you imagine how hard it would be to switch all these services by calling a call center somewhere?

This summer he "moved back in with us" here in Tennessee meaning that he opened a local bank account, licensed, insured and registered his car at our address and registered to vote here. There are so many ways to get 5% back from Amazon it's not even funny. Who can keep up with them all?

You can get 6% back on Amazon for up to $6000 by buying Amazon gift cards at the grocery store with an American Express Blue Cash Preferred card ($95 annual fee, 6% limited to $6000, then 1%.)

Most people probably don't spend $6000 at Amazon each year.

p.s. There was an Amex offer for "$10 off $50 at JC Penny" last month. I had it on 12 cards so I bought twelve $50 Amazon gift cards at JCP for $480 - works out to 20% off at Amazon! :)
