Hello,
Looking at adding some TIPS to the defensive part of portfolio. Age 40. Plan to work at least 15-20 years more at minimum, God willing, and wouldn't need the funds till then. Looking at TIPS fund for Roth IRA and/or regular IRA. Which duration(s) do you recommend? If you have an ETF or fund you recommend that would also be appreciated. Thank you!

Investing in Gold and Silver
Hello, I am looking to move a portion of our Roth IRA and regular IRA into precious metals such as gold and silver. I have been talking with the folks at Miles Franklin, a precious metals dealer, and they work with New Direction Trust to handle the storing of physical metals within IRAs. The advantage of this over a precious metals ETF is you can take delivery of 100% of the physical metals later on from what I have been told. Curious if anyone else on this forum has done similar with a part of their portfolio? If you have any other companies to compare to, or any other advice in general, I would appreciate it. Here is New Direction Trust's website: https://ndtco.com/precious-metals/ and Miles Franklin: https://www.milesfranklin.com/ Thank ...

Re: Wood Fireplace - Keep it or Get Rid of it?
Since you like the ambiance and splitting wood, it seems like a modest luxury that should be easy to justify unless things are tight. Also, while a significant percentage of buyers may not care about having a fireplace, since it is there, it will likely be checked during a buyer's inspection, and even if they had not previously had plans of using it, most buyers will probably still want to know it is in good condition in case they ever would want to use it. With that said, as long as you are going to have a little bit of work done, this is a good time to consider installing a wood-burning insert, especially if you burn a cord or more a year. It's normal to have large glass doors, so you still get the ambiance. They are far more efficient t...

Good to know. Thanks for sharing. Do you happen to remember what kit you bought?lthenderson wrote: ↑Fri Aug 19, 2022 10:46 amWe've either had a wood fireplace or ripped out the gas insert and installed a wood burning insert in every house we've owned. My lot has plenty of trees to provide the firewood so it is essentially free other than my sweat equity which I enjoy. It is also nice to have a heat backup for those winter power outages to prevent pipes from freezing. Have you considered doing the chimney sweep yourself? I bought a kit years ago for around $50 and it takes me only about 20 minutes to unscrew the raincap, do the sweep and put the raincap back on.

The chimney swifts are amazing birds, eat tons of insects, and really need our help. They nest in the summer when you are, presumably, not using your fireplace. A single swift will fly over 1 million miles per year since they live their lives on the wing.

Wood Fireplace - Keep it or Get Rid of it?
We have a 1950's house with a fireplace on main floor and one in basement. We really enjoy using them for the ambience. I also enjoy splitting wood for the exercise. This year though, expenses to maintain it will be a bit higher to pay a chimney sweep to clean as well as repair damaged top of chimney and add chimney caps. With this upcoming expense, it's making pause to see if putting money into repairs of the wood burning fireplace still makes sense for enjoyment reasons mentioned above. My second concern is will the EPA change guidelines going forward that might ban wood fireplaces in the next few years. I haven't heard of any but seeing things moving to clean energy makes me wonder how imminent banning of a wood fireplace and similar cou...

Re: 6 Month Treasuries for Holding Some of Our Savings?
I would consider buying another year of I Bonds in your gift boxes (for 2024 delivery) before buying Treasuries. Delivery would be only 16 months away (and as you know you can't sell them for the first 12 months anyway). As you know, you will earn 9.6% for the first six months. Then you'll get the Nov 1 rate reset for the next 6 months (which I think will be quite attractive). [Note that If the CPI remains flat from June through Sept (unlikely) the reset rate will be over 6.0%. That is not likely to happen, so figure you'll likely earn something like 7.5%+/- for the second six months or ~8.5% for the first 12 months.] Then hold for an additional 4 months and you'll be at January 2024 and could sell them should you choose to do so while not...

Hello, I have maxed out our I Bonds contributions for my wife and I this year and bought the 10k gifts for each other for next year. This is largely going to be used to store our savings and emergency fund. Instead of keeping our other relatively large chunk of savings in a low yield bank savings account, does it make sense to buy some 6 month treasuries right now as also part of our savings / emergency fund along with the I Bonds? Seems with the relatively high rate on the 6 month treasuries now it makes sense to me but maybe there are better options I don’t know about (CDs, etc). Re: 6 Month Treasuries for Holding Some of Our Savings?
I have been buying some at Vanguard. There are one or more long threads here you can search for treasuries. Kevin has been sharing what he has learned. I started with several 1 units ($1,000) so I got a little practice before I started with larger units. 1,000 units would be $1,000,000, AFAIK, so clear up any confusion first. I had Vanguard pull from my bank to put into the federal money market that comes with each account, which I had never used before. Then any order of treasuries or CDs can be filled by money in the MM. When they mature, the cash goes right back into the MM, now yielding 1.84%. (Some brokerages let you set up repeat purchases as each matures, but not V., AFAIK.) I buy either treasury bills/bonds or CDs from banks at Van...

Re: Does paying additional principal make sense in inflationary environment?
What matters is not specifically inflation, but the rate of return (and risk, if appropriate) on an alternative investment. If you have ten years left on your 4% mortgage, paying down the mortgage is a risk-free 4% return with a 10-year duration. If 10-year bonds yield 3%, then you get more money by paying down the mortgage than by investing in those bonds. (You might choose not to pay down the mortgage for other reasons, such as needing liquidity, or contributing more to your retirement plan for long-term tax-deferred growth.) Inflation is indirectly relevant because it affects the return on bonds; if investors expect inflation to be high, they will trade bonds at yields which give high nominal returns. Currently, 10-year TIPS yield 0.14%...

Now that I have already bought them - when I go to "Edit" and then add my wife as registrant, do I add her as the primary owner or beneficiary? I imagine beneficiary?
And, after that do I add her as First Name Registrant or Second Name Registrant? Probably a dumb question but doesn't make sense to me.

The gift for January 2024 delivery would earn 8.5% though March 2023. The interest rate for the April 2023 - September 2023 period is going to be based on what inflation is during the April 2022 through September 2022 period, which will probably still be elevated.
So, the interest rate for the first 18 months you hold the bond will probably be high. That makes a gift that can be redeemed in January 2024 also worth considering.

I can't figure out the error in my thinking. I know exactly what you did because I did the same thing the first time I bought a gift. When buying a gift you select a person other than yourself in the drop down. But since it is the first time you are buying a gift for this person you selected "add a person" (some statement like that). Then, you created the profile for that person. Next you moved forward with the purchase. However, after creating the new person's profile the drop-down selection defaulted back to you instead of the new person you just created. Which Company Do You Use for Renting a Car?
Curious who you use for rental cars and why you choose that certain company?
I have heard good things about the Turo app from a friend, as well as using Costco to find a rental car.
We are a family of 5 with young kids that will be staying in California for a week coming up. So looking at a minivan, SUV or sedan at the smallest.
For those with a family with kids, have you ever tried doing Lyft or Uber instead of rental car? Or, is it too much of a hassle with finding someone with a big enough car?
Any input is appreciated! Thank you.
