To: Taylor Larimore: Early Withdrawals

I recollect somewhere that you retired at fifty-seven without the advantages of chat boards, number crunchers and the chattering classes. Did you begin to withdraw from your portfolio at that early age with only your wits? That you managed so well from fifty-seven to almost ninety must have involved a special strategy since you did not yet know of the 4% withdrawal rules.

It is indeed hard to save money for retirement. The one colossal issue is to give in to the idea of one day being old. This is why automatic investing is a good thing, even though you're still convinced, like Sally Bowles, you'd rather be good looking corpse.

Re: NY Times:For Some, Retirement Is Out of Reach. For Other

People who find retirement boring don't have the imagination. For example, Being committed also gets Arline Tarte going. In 2000, after a long career at the helm of a commercial printing firm, Ms. Tarte, now 71, left the industry for good. For two years, she played bridge, went to the theater and ballet, saw jazz concerts. But she says she found it uninspiring at best. “I was used to doing all that and running a company that was very involved,” she said. “It was boring.” Here you have a New Yorker with the best playground in the world at her feet, who's got bored with a few activities she's tried. Victoria Yes, but the NYT carefully quoted someone who is probably not very interesting anyhow. Lots of retired NYers are interesting and discov...

A Soft Shoe Strut Down Vegas

The weekend WSJ has an article,"Investing for the Fun of It", in which John Bogle and Burton Malkiel each admit to stock picking, but only as a hobby, once the serious business of indexing of retirement funds have been concluded. One instance of one investor uses as much as 5-8% of his portfolio as "fun money". "Enjoy the fun of gambling and the thrill of the chase, but not with your rent money and certainly not with college education funds for your children, nor with your retirement nest egg," warns Mr. Bogle. Does anyone else use extra money from their portfolio to go to the races?

In the weekend WSJ article, "The 100% Stock Solution", it states instances in which an all equity portfolio may be fitting. This strategy flies against Mr. Bogle's philosophy, or does it? Do any Bogleheads go full throttle with an all stock portfolio?
