The thing about Google is that they give no warranty on the data storage. They've had data loss incidents with their mail and docs products.

Hacking isn't limited to retrieving data for nefarious uses. It can also entail simple vandalism such as data deletion.
And of course there is good old fashioned user error.
Backups really should be read only.
