Re: Recommending my mother in law cancel life policies

And the age of the policies...

There just isn't enough information for us to know.

I would surmise based on the death benefit that the policies likely are not needed for estate planning purposes, but that is the most likely "need" for life insurance given the rest of the story.

Once you're in Sharebuilder, weekly buys are only $4.
This "existing investor" received the $500 offer "if you deposit $10,000 into a new or existing account."

Also note, if you are a costco member then the weekly buys are only $2. Costco membership also discounts on other fees, from the subscription for free trades to margin rates.

Sharebuilder is now owned by CapitalOne.

There's a good chance the next component will be 0%, thus you'd earn only 0.88% interest for the 1st year. I will wait until April when I know the combined rate (1.76% + ???%) for the next year before I decide to buy more I-Bonds.
Likewise. And unless there is a drastic change by May, I would expect the base rate to stay at 0%.

Re: Information you should have before buying gold

valuethinker Completely agree with the one caveat which I noted, those countries you cite are the very ones where it is most likely that just when you need the gold the government comes and confiscates it (usually at the point of a machine gun) Larry US gold confiscation before raising the price 65% in 1933 didn't require the guns. Actually it did. The message was not, "Come turn in your gold, pretty please." It was not even sweetened by a little bonus. Instead it was accompanied by threat of arrest and restriction on privacy that you could not open your safe deposit box without officials to witness. UNDER EXECUTIVE ORDER OF THE PRESIDENT Issued April 5, 1933 all persons are required to deliver ON OR BEFORE MAY 1, 1933 all GOLD C...
