Re: Brokerage/Custodian Question

I am not a "trader" at all. All my investments are either mutual funds/ETFs with the exception of one stock. I was able to negotiate the lower fee due to my account size, I guess.

Brokerage/Custodian Question

Currently I manage my accounts (After Tax, IRA, Roth IRA) at TD Ameritrade. I have no complaints on their service. I was able to negotiate a lower fee for non-preferred mutual funds (like Vanguard). I pay $10 each way vs. their standard $49 fee each way. They also have a a number of ETFs including Vanguard which have no fee trading. I have been considering moving to Vanguard but from time to time have read concerns on service and websites. My biggest complaint on TD Am is the lack of Vanguard Admiral share class availability. Admiral shares appear to be available at Scottrade.

I know many on this board use Vanguard services. I appreciate any feedback about their service quality. Thanks

Re: When should I start taking Social Security?

Here are my ideas for your situation. I believe your wife will be eligible for a spousal benefit based on your work record. Some or all of the SS may be subject to Federal taxation (state taxation varies). Since she has reached her FRA, she will receive 50% of your FRA benefit ($1,150 based on your $2,300 FRA benefit.) as long you are drawing your age 65 benefit. If you have not reached your FRA and are not taking your benefit, your spouse can not receive the spousal benefit based on your work record. If you delay taking SS until later, this will not increase her spousal benefit, as it is always 50% of your FRA amount. Now when you reach age 66, your FRA, you could suspend your benefit and she will continue to receive the spousal benefit. T...
