Re: Bankruptcy
(1) Are you the original borrower? This would mean that your mother only co-signed the loan to help you out when it was originated. Go read the promissory note and security agreement and see what it says about the BK of a borrower or guarantor. (2) How is the car title held? Jointly with your parent? If so, it is technically an asset of the bankruptcy estate and may need to be scheduled. (3) If you intend to continue paying the car loan so that you will not be in payment default, you should contact the lender and find out how to proceed without causing a default and acceleration of balance of the car loan. The title is listed in both of our names (jointly with my mother) and the car is paid off. I made all the payments but that's irrelevan...

Bankruptcy
A few days ago I found out my parents are filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy in MD. They looked at other options 13, restructure, etc.. and this is their decision. My mother co-signed for my car while in College. I have heard that sometimes you are forced to sell assets to repay loans owed. Is it possible that my car could be involved in the bankruptcy? Should I get the title transferred to my name only?

Re: What was your worst investment?
Freshman year a college buddy convinced me to invest in a Ponzi scheme known as Excel (long distance phone provider) all I had to do was get a bunch of friends and family members to switch their phone providers and I would be making money hands over fist. $250 later (all the money I had at the time) and I soon realized I had been swindled.

$17/trade for vanguard/index funds. Makes rebalancing tough. One upside is no yearly maintenance fee.

I understand I should not try to time the market, but it run crazy up for so long, it is scary.
what should I do now?
Confused.

Re: Just Sold Out. What do you think?
The market is at an all time high but it is just a tad higher than it was 6 years ago. Who is to say that it will not reach 20,000 30,000 or even 50,000. Personally, I am young enough (30's) to handle a 30, 40 or 50% decline because I know the market will bounce back. For me the only variable in the market is time, not bull market rallies or bear market declines.

Funny how so many bogleheads own Berkshire. Never seen it mentioned until this thread. I'd guess many people do not take the same advice they give.

Re: How much is too much for car repairs?
Hindsight is 20-20. You can't change what you spent but you have to ask yourself how much you like driving your car? If another big repair is needed, can you stomach the bill? Having the repairs done, would you be happy driving your car for another 5 - 10 years given it only needed minor repairs? I havent purchased a vehicle in a while but I will bet $250 a month doesn't get you a whole lot without a lofty down payment.
I havent had a carpayment for 6 years and plan on staying that way. I have a few good mates who a skilled mechanics. I lean on them when I need to.

MD = high taxes, high c.o.l, horrible traffic, extreme weather. I am a former MoCo resident and do not regret leaving. If you like metro/city life it's not so bad. However it's not an ideal place to reitre.

Re: [My Fee Only Planner's] Fees are going up!
My fee only planner for the last 5 years has changed the fee structure of his business and a reasonable $2700/year fee is going to be $6000 next year with an increase to $8400 the following year. The new fee is based on net worth. I will pay for advice on the assets he actually advises but I'm not willing to pay on my total net worth. I won't pay an ongoing fee for my house and other hard assets. The question is, do I start over with another planner or try to go it myself? I'm 5 years away from retirement. Most of the retirement assets are invested in index funds that I've been buying and selling through discount brokerage firms, including Vanguard. My second question, what do I do when it comes time for distributions? Has anyone used the ...

Re: After the Election, the Stock Market has been Diving
TBH if you spend less than you make it doesn't really matter. I put the same amount of money in my account whether it goes up or down. Everything else is just bumps in the road. In the last 12 years the market has survived Y2K, 9-11, numerous wars, debt ceiling being raised many times over, this is just media doing what it does best, arousing fear so people watch more media.

Re: 5K or 3K oil change?
I use synthetic which says I can theoretically go 15k before oil changes, my manual recommends 3k. However, my last oil change was 7 months ago (about 2.5k miles) and upon inpection found my oil level was low. Apparently, last time the dealership changed my oil they left the gasket from the old oil filter on which affects the seal.englishgirl wrote:10k for my car.
As a result, my new rule of thumb is I change the oil whenever it is needed (kinda like rebalancing) either based on miles or on time. I have to periodically check my oil level and as long as the level is fine, I generally change about every 6 - 7.5k miles or yearly.

I am not talking about X months of emergency funds, or short term savings for a particular item, but a real % allocation to cash in your AA that you maintain over time independently of those things.
Eventually, this will be 0.

I just sold all of my mutual funds and feel liberated from paying high fees, even redemption fees in some cases. I have 30k to invest and it is going to be in a taxable account.
