For what it's worth, I started my own Foundation. This has helped me spend money. Hopefully it will continue to help others and survive me after my passing. There are many ways to envision large, meaningful projects with a direct impact on the lives of those in need.

Re: Would you work in Bermuda?
I would do it. . Potential new job in Bermuda with substantially higher pay. I'm not interested in moving the whole family, just "commuting", i.e. flying back and forth every few weeks or month, something like that. Current job is good, this would just be like a salary of ~$200k more per year (roughly on the order of double). Personal info: 35, married, 1 kid (2nd grade), house, mortgage. 1M net worth (x SS), moderate COL area currently. I'm just thinking it might be worth it to do for a few years in order to retire earlier. My dad just had a heart attack before age 70 so I'm thinking, "wow retiring at 67 means I might drop dead the day I retire". Sorry if that's morbid. What do you guys think? Anyone ever done something...

To answer the OP's question I guess I let several millions on the table when I retired at age 50. However, I still see patients part time, and travel the rest of the time. The pull to give up my full time position was very strong, made even stronger because of politics.

Let's be careful about stereotypes please. I have provided care to HMO patients the same way as PPO ones, as many of my colleagues have (not all).
To the OP: Sounds like your provider is not part of the mainstream thinking in terms of insurance coverage. I would not swicth plans at this stage in case of possible future paperwork complications. Best wishes.

Re: How many folks choose to give inheritance to their children in unequal portions?
I haven't read all the posts in this thread but IMO choosing to give inheritance to one's children in unequal portions is one of the worst things parents can do. It happened years ago in my own family. My aunt got a house, and my dad got a few books. Both my aunt and dad had a great relationship with their parents, so I don't understand what happened. Nothing was really the same after that. These are issues that still affect relationships among us, the grandchildren, even 30 years later. A friend of mine, who is nearing the end of his life, asked me for some information about inheritance. He has three children, and he is contemplating splitting his inheritance in unequal portions. He is wondering how common it is. Situation - he has three c...

Re: Early retirees, at what age did you "retire"? Is it working out?
To answer your question, seeing patients part time helps for a couple of reasons. 1) I worry less about money 2) I still love what I do and I enjoy the feeling of being "helpful" 3) working even part time helps me keep active - I just can't face being on vacation all the time. I retired last year at age 50. Working great so far. Retiring early has allowed me to travel a lot more. I still see some patients part time, which helps. I live in HCOL area. I regret not being able to retire earlier. In what way(s) does seeing some patients part time help? Is it keeping your hospital privileges, staying engaged and current in your field, having additional cash-flow, etc.? How do you keep the appointments from hampering your ability to trav...

I know it's mainly about saving a ton and living below your means, but did achieving this require a move to a LCOL area? Is the early retirement working out? Do you stress about money? Do you regret anything? Am interested in hearing your insights and experiences.
