Yes, it could be a big help.

Re: College Funding Strategies
Live at home, junior college; then state school, dorm (not sorority), clunker (not new car), and work. Tens of thousands do this and graduate debt-free every year. It takes good self-esteem, determination and pluck.

Re: Any BH farm owners?
Not unusual, but I receive the usual subsidies plus tax write-offs for farm improvements. Just received a settlement check from Bayer for genetically modified rice (class action suit). I could double-crop (soybeans on wheat, for example) for additional money, but don't. I could farm crawfish with my rice, but don't. I could flood rice fields and sell leases to duck hunters, but I don't.

Re: uh oh - CPA indicted
Our CPA avoided prosecution by paying back $50,000 he had lifted from an estate. We removed him as our alternate trustee, but have kept him on as tax-preparer since he cannot do much damage there. We cut him this slack because his father was a good friend and an honorable man.

Re: Student Loans for which year(s) of college?
Student loans at the undergraduate level are almost never justifiable (in the opinion of this retired university professor). Before committing, please read up on the subject. Just type "student loans" @ amazon and @ google.

Mel, etc. - I-Bond Redemption
I have $50K in PAPER I-Bonds, purchased November, 2007, and redeemable in six months. I don't wish to redeem, though, and cannot find anything at the TD site about the option/advisability of just letting the bonds ride in my safe-deposit box. Your thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

To each his own, but for me, there is no good alternative for LTCI. My wife and I are happily and reasonably covered by TIAA-CREF/MetLife. It's the best asset protection around, in our opinion.

I'm sorry to say that IMO there's no happy ending to this story. As painful as moving on would be, that is the best solution for your long-term happiness.
