401k advice

Greetings,

I have a 401k account with Fidelity but I was laid off in June. I am employed again but my employer does not have a 401k program. What do I do with my old 401k account? Move it to a traditional IRA? I don't really know how long I will stay in this job. I like it because no one day is the same and I am learning a lot.

stats
home: NYC
old Fidelity 401k - about $74k
Roth IRA Vanguard- $14k

Thank you for all your help!

You don't want to be an absentee landlord. Get a roommate and save your money. When this bubble pops stupendously then you can probably think about getting a property.

Go with Uncharted 4 and you might as well snag Uncharted Drake Collection and you will have enough to be entertained. I want to recommend Metal Gear Solid to you that is if your into sneaking missions. For senseless fun download Rocket League from the PS4 store, it is the easiest game to play and to get hooked on.

No your answer is sensible. Alas we have to live in this low interest environment. The only thing a person can do is adapt. Save more and try to earn more. The simplest answer is the best answer.

Re: Best way to keep $10,000 liquid yet still earn some interest

Thank you Saimond for the article. It is a thought but I don't have a sizable taxable account. I feel it is too risky to put it in an index fund, but if I did have enough money it would be worth a shot. I would like it to be seed money for a down payment one day. I'm not asking for 5% in this low interest environment. I sure miss those 3% PenFed cds.

Best way to keep $10,000 liquid yet still earn some interest

I would like to earn a little more than 1%. I have searched the forums but I am still undecided. I want to keep it as simple as possible. I would like to read real world experiences from my fellow bogleheads.

1) Create a cd ladder - I would have liked to keep my cds in Ally but their rates are not as competitive. Synchrony wins in this regard but I am not familiar with them, and Barclays penalties are a little lenient.

2) I have heard about Treasury bonds, TIPS and I-Bonds. I get the gist of it but my problem is implementing it. Bonds seem confusing to me I would like to keep it simple.

So what is the best way to squeeze a little return out of $10,000 safely?

Re: Early retirement and opportunity cost, by Harry Sit

I have enjoyed reading all the responses. The main idea took out of it is too have enough. We live in a very fortunate and rich country where we have so many options. I believe when people read blogs like Mr. Money Moustache people often compare themselves to those who retired early and others living on a Tiny house traveling all over the States. It is a mistake to compare your life like that. Your choices are unique to you, you make your life what you want and adapt to your circumstances. There are many ways to live comfortably, make wise choices and enjoy your life. I once asked a waiter "which is the best wine" and he said to me "the wine that you enjoy the most". A nice idea that can be applicable to our life choices.

I agree with you SAM, but one would be naïve not to think something is amiss. I don't subscribe to zombie apocalypse scenarios. There is a common thread embedded in all the noise in the media, a grain of truth as it were. I think governments do more harm than good but I shall leave it at that.

Re: What does holding cash mean?

Thank you for the replies, holding cash simply mean keeping them in low risk accounts like a savings account. I guess it is safe to say without being an alarmist that one should continue to keep cash in banks whether they be online or brick and mortar no matter what mischief governments are doing. My philosophy is to keep a balanced portfolio, I have stocks, bonds, cash online, and a very small maybe 1-2% in precious metals mainly silver. Even the establishment cannot fully control whatever is left of the free market, there are things beyond their control. My goal is save as much money as possible for opportunities that may come but I don't want to keep all of it at home.

What does holding cash mean?

It is obvious that one should have cash on hand. Now when advisors say "hold cash" what does that usually mean? Especially in this uncertain economic climate where governments of the US and EU are comtemplating to eliminate big denominations, and negative interest rates. Is it safe to keep your emergency fund in an online bank? or should you keep it under your mattress? It would be unwise to keep all of your cash in precious metals, so what do they mean by "hold cash".

I have been a satisfied Schwab bank customer. I have been doing online banking completely for many years now no brick and mortar banks for me. The only con is moving money from one bank to the next can take a couple of days so you have to anticipate what you may need and plan accordingly. I like the free standard checks I get, I use the brokerage account as a dummy account for planned expenses. It has helped me a lot whenever I ran out of money on my checking account. What won me over was one time when Digit was taking out money from my checking account which of course there were no funds to cover the transfer. Three Fund Portfolio is good advice at least a good starting point. Why have 80% assets in the US? because it is the most developed open market in the world. Not perfect but the best. For me there is too much risks when you invest in international. Besides most major US companies also do business internationally as well. I'll stick to the US of A thank you very much. You can take your international bond fund if you want just make sure you don't have any Greek debt in the fund. Contrary to what the title says Three fund portfolio is good advice.

I like the first chart comparing the 1st year balance between a no load ETF and a front loaded fund. Really which one would you pick? the product with the biggest balance the ETF of course. I like Dave Ramsey's take on debt I'm just disappointed that he continues to recommend front load funds because they will outperform the market because you paid a sales charge and 1% management fee. Rubbish! Just as compounding interest is the 8th wonder of the world compounding expenses is a sure way to be poor. Re: Career Advice: Follow "Passion" or Follow the Money?

If you want to make a lot of money so you can retire early have you asked yourself what are your retiring to? Seems counterintuitive to save a lot money to catch up on compound interest if you find yourself stuck and unhappy now. Why don't you live a little you are already ahead of the game without student debt. There are things in life that you cannot value with money. Don't just throw money at everything challenge yourself.

If you still want to make a lot of money so you can retire early follow Mr. Money Moustache's blog. Don't get into a new job just for the money do the jobs you know you are very good at and the money will follow.

PremierHeat Plan - parts and labor coverage, Annual Payment 127.87 or Monthly $10.65

PremierHeat Plus Plan - parts and laber coverage plus on annual tune up for my heating system. Annual payment $165.32 or Monthly $13.77

These offers are half priced for the first year.

I switched to Charles Schwab. I love their site and their checking account. I live in NYC so whenever I have a check to deposit it takes about 3 to 4 days to clear which includes the time it takes for my check to get to their Orlando office. Schwab's only branch is located in Reno, Nevada. If you need to take out more than $200 you can go to any brick and mortar bank. Schwab Bank will even pay the $3.00 fee most banks charge to take out money. I prefer taking my money out from banks because of their security. If there is one thing I wish Charles Schwab did is if you can deposit your money to one of their offices in major markets that is my only gripe.

Re: Investing Money for House Purchase

If you are saving for a down payment it is a good idea to put the money in a savings account or CD's. about 5 months ago PenFed offered 5 year cd's paying 3%. Watch for these opportunities, 5 year horizon is much too short to invest your money in a volatile stock market. If you were willing to wait 10 years maybe it is worthwhile. Simply put, save aggressively for your down payment and keep it safe, if your still thinking of investing your money for your down payment set aside a small portion and put it in an index fund preferably in Vanguard's Total Stock Index do not buy bond or balanced funds since they will be held in a taxable account. For more information on investing in taxable accounts read the Bogleheads wiki found in the forums.

Yes NYC business legislations is a byzantine mess but I believe I can do it. I don't expect to get rich from it but I need extra income and it is something I can do rather quickly to get a buck or two. I know I can do it on my own but I want to be legit, do all the proper paperwork, and pay the proper taxes. Again I am not hiring employees instead it will be by myself. Of course my tax situation would change so I would consult a CPA. Anyone who has set up a sole proprietorship business NYC please chime in.

If it helps I bought an Epson Workforce 3530 for $119 which replaced a 4 year old Canon Pixma Printer. According to the specs you should be able to scan to pdf and it has 2 trays to hold paper. You have the option to purchase high yield ink. I wanted to save money on ink so this is my first Epson but so far so good. It can print, fax, scan and copy. There is even a separate tray where you feed the document and makes the copy or scan automatically similar to what you would do in an office copier. I love the Canon Pixma printers unfortunately it was an ink hog with 5 tanks to replace but it printed great pictures. Give Epson a try.

Question on the use of Ibonds

I have about $6,000 in emergency funds. Saving rates are low, I figured I should at least preserve it from inflation. If I were to purchase ibonds I would start once I hit $10,000. CD ladders I have heard of but not ibond ladders.
