You could ask for a cash discount, yet I wouldn't necessarily expect they would agree to that.
Consider yourself lucky that the bill wasn't higher. ER visits are incredibly expensive. While you may have sticker shock, the bill seems to not be outrageous.
The good news is that you recovered... It's not always easy to look on the bright side when faced with an unexpected bill, however.

Re: Financial implications of long jury duty
My employers always paid for jury duty absences with no limit on the number of days. I've never even heard of an employer not paying wages for the entire duration of a trial. You must never talk to owners of small businesses. I never paid my employees for jury duty. Typically, with10-16 employees there was no way we could afford to do it. Likewise, I have never served on a jury. As a healthcare provider, if I wasn't seeing patients there was NO revenue. If there was no revenue, there was no way to keep much of my staff employed. So serving on a jury meant that most of my staff would be out of work during that period as well. The same reason that I hardly ever took time off for most of my career. That makes perfect sense. I got the sense th...

She's so close to finishing that it would be a shame for her to drop out now. I would strongly encourage her to finish the degree.
I don't recall the exact stats, but read a study that indicated that most realtors drop out of that industry within the first year or two because they don't earn enough to make it a viable career.

I live where it snows so refuse to drive a white car, believing that it could blend in with the snow/be less visible in snow.
--I have no scientific evidence if this belief is reasonable or not.
--There are many, many white cars on the snowy roads so my preference is possibly not widely shared.
--Many emergency vehicles are red or yellow, likely for visibility reasons.

...... the day I retired. Saving for short term goals is fine and while I appreciate your focus I never stopped once I started nor would I ever recommend that anyone do unless it's a dire situation. Especially if you lose out on any company matching funds. I'd sooner reduce my contributions. +1. My wife and also stopped saving for retirement the day we retired, but we saved at a significant rate until then, resulting in a very comfortable retirement. Well I don't always like to quote lots of quotes yet in this case, you both have captured our experience very well. We lived frugally so that we could continue to save throughout our working years. In Colorado, the sales tax on your car will depend on your home address. This applies regardless of where you buy your car in Colorado. I'm not quite sure how it works if you do not have a permanent address.
We paid 5% sales tax on our most recent car purchase. This is the same rate we would pay today if we were to buy a car.

I would not recommend this purchase with one income, it's too risky. Like others have noted, if you're in a LCOL area, you should be able to find an amazing house for much less than $900K.
Wait until baby arrives before buying a home, as you originally planned. You seem like maybe your mind is made up about this. Instead, take heed of the advice given by other posters and delay this purchase for a more affordable home.

Re: FIRE-ing In, Quitting versus Getting FIRE-d - Talking to Boss Tomorrow
Living in NYC my whole life, I repeatedly saw how people often end up when they detach themselves from job, family, tradition, context, leaving a job and a structured life too early without a concrete plan other than a vague notion of freedom and personal development. Frequently they were my neighbors, or, after their eviction, I’d pass them on the street. I really want to caution everyone that humans need identity, socialization, challenge, structure and order in their day, and that it’s hard to enduringly replicate those things that a job often provides . The first year or two can be fun but as the years pass things can change and not just financially. I mostly agree with the first part of the highlighted sentence (not everyone needs str...

I am not willing to go out of the U.S. for medical care. We scrimped and saved for many years and while it may be expensive, for now I'm willing to pay for U.S. based medical care, if/when needed. Maybe that's a waste of money, maybe not, but we would cut back in many other categories (if needed) before we'd seek medical care outside of the U.S.
Maybe the jokes on us though? We haven't needed much in terms of medical care but obviously that could change as we get older...

You severance may be $0 since you have limited tenure with your employer, but that's mostly irrelevant. You've set yourself up well to take a break or do whatever you want. You should be proud of what you have accomplished. Most importantly, please take care of yourself during this challenging time. Divorce is a big change. Job loss/change/retirement/etc. can be a big change. Combined, this is a stressful time in your life so YOU should be your top priority, not loyalty to your manager or your company. No, so I made a couple of job changes and greatly increased my salary a few times as a result. My biggest financial regret is staying at an employer for a 10+ year stretch when I was younger; the annual raises were in the 2-4% range. I then learned that changing jobs was the best way to dramatically increase my salary.

I've bought 3 houses and made money selling the first two. We're living in house #3, which was purchased in 2009. So, I'd like to claim I have excellent luck/timing, but it's mostly luck.
Our suburb has experienced a substantial increase in property values and property taxes. So we're unlikely to buy house #4 because the price of nearby homes has risen as well. We're in an excellent location so are happy to stay here. Yet I worry about younger home owners being priced out of our area...

Re: Denver car theft and crime issues - how bad is it?
We all have our own perspectives and experiences and I definitely don't want to start any sort of argument. Yet statements like "avoid downtown Denver at all costs" seem overly alarmist. Is the area crime free? Of course not. Are thousands of people there safely every day? Yes. Is it the best place to wander alone late at night? No, but you can say that about lots of places within the U.S.
While we live in the burbs, we attend events downtown regularly. There are car break-ins, to be sure, yet these are primarily crimes of opportunity. Do not leave items visible in your car and you'll generally be fine. I truly would not be overly concerned with crime. Enjoy your travels!

You will need a reservation to visit RMNP in the summer.
The biggest risk of stolen vehicles is certain, older Kia and Hyundai models. I don't know a lot of details of which models (Google will know), but these thefts have been prevalent throughout the country. Denver was previously a hot spot for these thefts.
Don't leave items visible in your car, even in RMNP. Theft at the airport is down quite a lot, as another poster mentioned. I would definitely not let possible theft deter you from visiting. Just use common sense, as you would in any city.

Re: Seeking advice: CU Boulder vs. Mines
They are very different universities, as you know. Mines is all STEM all the time, CU offers a broader range of programs. The campus sizes and vibes are obviously much different. Mines students' starting salaries used to be much higher than CU students' starting salaries (for STEM degrees.) Class sizes will generally be smaller at Mines than at CU. I know people who work at both of these universities and used to work with many engineers, so would give the advantage to Mines based on feedback from these people. There is substantial overlap between the engineering and CS curriculum (particularly for first year students at Mines and that may be the same at CU, yet I'm not familiar with the CS curriculum at CU.) CU definitely has some advantage...

Re: Dental Provider refuses to bill all charges to Insurance
Dental insurance can be complicated. I have decent dental insurance, I believe. For example, my insurance covera 4 cleanings a year. But some things are not covered at all by insurance and I pay 100% of those non-covered costs. There is no reason for the dentist to bill insurance for these costs because, by definition, they are not covered.
So, while it can be frustrating, it also makes sense to me that your dentist won't bill insurance for non-covered expenses. Dental insurance is not intended to cover all costs, so I agree that calling it insurance can be confusing.

We greatly enjoyed biking in the Netherlands, which has a fantastic biking infrastructure. The scenery was fabulous and the culture of biking was so much fun. We biked throughout the country, through big cities and small towns. It definitely does not meet your criteria for hilly or mountainous, however. It’s a small country so if you wanted a 1-2 month trip, you could also visit a nearby country (or two or three.)
We looked at bike tour companies' routes to get ideas for our route. You could build your own itinerary by doing something similar.

Property taxes have risen because property values have jumped 50% the last couple of years. Income tax hasn't changes and I believe state tax on SS has actually been reduced and mostly eliminated. I.E. if you are 65 or older, no tax on SS. I'm unaware that "taxes are rising." snip... This is inaccurate. Colorado DOES partially tax Social Security. We live in the Denver suburbs and would not likely consider living in the city of Denver. There are nice areas on all sides of Denver. North of Denver will be windier. Weather this week will range from 64 degrees as a high temp to a possible blizzard on Saturday. Some people don't like the wild temperature swings. Air quality can be an issue if there are a lot of fires in the summer (not just CO fires, but WA, CA, etc. fires can impact our air.) Someone upthread posted a link to check air quality stats. The water situation is not great; many communities offer incentives for removing water-intensive lawns. Definitely research water availability/cost if you narrow down potential locations, as water cost varies a lot in the some of the suburbs...

Snip... Or you can just buy a nice Jetta and keep an extra $10k in your pocket. I have a 2023 on my daughter's driveway right now with only 5,000 miles. Great car. Hope this helps. Car purchases are so very personal. I've posted several times before that I had my heart set on a Mazda CX5 but the seats were incredibly uncomfortable for me. Others love them and that is just fine. I loved the get up and go, which are not positive aspects of our Forester and CR-V. Our friends previously had a Jetta and that would be at the bottom of my list of cars that I would ever recommend. I drove it a couple times (terrible driving experience) and they eventually dumped it due to lots of problems. Plus I don't envision how a Jetta would be equivalent to a...

Re: Resignation Letter
Everyone thinks they are a top performer, especially on Bogleheads. I have seen actual top performers get raises when the official corporate line is "no raises for anyone."
Do not resign until you have received the bonus. Then submit your resignation as per company policy. There is certainly no benefit to including a reason for your resognation in your communication to your manager.
Enjoy your retirement!

Re: How did you make your first $1M?
College->Degree->Job—>lived below my means—>saved & invested Then it’s just time. Time is definitely powerful; compounding is a wonderful gift. I grew up in the lower class (never homeless or without food, however) and going to college was unheard of for my family. I don't likely align with the typical Boglehead profile as a result of my relatively poor upbringing. My spouse grew up in the middle class however. I persisted and earned great grades in school, completed undergrad and then had an employer who paid for my grad degree while I worked full time. Despite earning a modest salary in my 20s, I contributed to retirement accounts in my 20s, which is key because I'm a big believer in the power of compounding. I increased my salary su...

Re: When should I switch from tax-deferred to taxed investments for retirement?
If I recall correctly, we opened taxable brokerage accounts in our 30s, while still maxing our tax deferred accounts. So, I don't necessarily recommend a switch; if possible contribute to both. Do NOT give up a match on a tax deferred account - that is throwing away free money. It's not an either/or option, the answer is "contribute to both." Or contribute to as many accounts as you can. You've not provided extensive information about your investments and retirement timeline so the "contribute to both" advice is somewhat generic...

Re: A Sales Team's Ultimatum
Agree with JoeNJ28. Find another place to work. That said, in my industry (before I retired last June) I saw compensation schemes all over the map. I've been technical attached to sales so either was on the same compensation plan or a modified version. Companies had wildly different compensation. Some examples: Jack FFR1846, Just curious what was the commission percentage. In the good old days, Telecom salesperson get 2% of the gross sales. Many major account salespersons are far richer than the VPs. KlangFool So salesperson is richer than sales VP? Richer? Maybe... Maybe not... If you have a particular sales person that is blowing out their number, year over year over year, they could be making a massive amount of money. Very of...

Re: If you are able to accomplish these, please tell me how
1. anyone who gets to gym or works out "everyday" is lying. I know plenty of people who do, although I know a lot of gym rats. Perhaps not literally 365 days a year in the gym, but plenty of people do at least some sort of work out 5 days a week (myself included). I maintained that even when I had 2 kids under 5. Sometimes all I could work in was 15 minutes of running or calisthenics, but I feel awful if I take more than 3-4 days off exercise. I also feel awful if I take more than a couple days off of working out. Thankfully we have gym equipment in our basement and also live about a five minutes walk from a gym, which is very convenient. Most of our friends are also gym rats and/or very active, which is the lifestyle that we are...

Re: What frugal thing did you do today?
Trimmed and repotted Amaryllis bulbs used for holiday decoration. Hope to overwinter them in a sunny spot, move them outdoors for the summer, and force the bulbs again at the holidays next year. These were good quality bulbs costing ~$30/each, so if successful will save $90 or so. Excellent idea! I am waiting for our amarillys bulbs from last year to bloom again. Hopefully that will happen any day now. Hopefully your experiment works well. Related to this, we kept our poinsettia alive from winter 2022 and it is still on display. It looks great after keeping it in the dark for twelve hours a day and exposing it to daylight for the remainder of the time. It is covered with bright red leaves, so we did not buy any holiday plants this year. Go...

Re: Utah National Parks trip in May
Utah park hiking is fantastic! We've hiked the major parks several times. Last May we hiked Bryce in snow. The previous March we hiked there without snow, so be sure to be prepared for varying weather. Zion and Arches are likely to be the busiest parks.
