A couple years ago there was a bill in the works in congress to increase the annual ibond contribution limit...which appears to have stalled.
But I wonder if the treasury might be motivated in the near future to increase the annual ibond contribution limit as another means to fund the country's ever-growing national debt. I'm probably missing something here, but wouldn't that be more advantageous than enticing people with higher fixed rates?

In Blood Meridian, he really takes his time. It's a very slow-moving book, which would normally drive me completely nuts, but on this one it really worked for me and pulled me in in a way that I've rarely encountered before in fiction. He captured the feel of what it must have been like -- long stretches of traveling on horseback through beautiful country interrupted by brief episodes of brutal violence. He has some scenes and images in there that I'll never forget. The Judge character alone is worth the price of admission. From what I read, Cormac was compulsive researching what it was like back, and I guess it's freakishly accurate from a historical perspective.

Re: Is it foolish to keep driving my old car?
If it were me I would keep running the existing car but there obviously will be a point where the costs and repairs wouldn't make sense anymore. Though I generally do the vast majority of my own automotive repairs, which reduces those costs significantly.
As for trips if you're only doing one or two a year, you could rent a car for the week. If you get a reasonable deal on a rental car, the costs should be fairly close. People get trapped into thinking that if you use your own car the trip is somehow magically free (minus fuel costs) when of course that's not the case. Plus, with a rental if things should go south you can call and tell them to get you a new car. Play with the irs personal vehicle write-off numbers once.

Re: What is the Most You Would Buy in the I Bond Gift Box in a Year?
I was struggling with this question myself.
i have 3 years in my giftbox right now and was considering increasing this to 5 years with the rates being what they are. This would be for my wife and myself (5 years each).
I am toying with the idea of going out as far as 7 years but do question whether I'm starting to go overboard with the giftbox.
The reason I was thinking 7 was because I had 4 years of ibonds earning 0 fixed that I was thinking of rolling over to the current rate. This, along with TIPs, which I have been also purchasing, would be used for liability matching from ages 60-80.

Smokey mountains I'll have to visit again because last time we were there they didn't do much for me. However, I thougth the same thing the first time we stopped at Rocky Moutanin National Park on the way home from out West. Couldn't see why it would make anyone's list. Few summers later we visited my daugther who was working in Estes during college break, and it turned out that the Estes entrance is the way to go. Awesome park. Yosemte is high up on my list. It was crowded when we went...but as others had mentioned there's a good reason why it's so croweded. And I dont' think if it has to be an issue. The trick is you get there early, get a parking spot, and don't leave that spot until you leave the park. There are shuttles to get get arou...

Re: Washington Post: "That 'free' annual checkup might cost you"
I've had a similiar experience to others listed here. The free annual checkup wasn't a check up other than the nurse would take my weight and height and the physician would ask a few qeustions like how are you doing/how's it going. He might have listened to my heart but that was it in terms of an exam or even touching me. One time when he asked if I had any concens, I mentioned that I had a new mole pop up on my wrist. He glanced at it for a second, and said that it was nothing. I was in the office less than 10 minutes and the bill before insurance was if I remember right 1200 dollars. When I asked billing why the clinic was billing me what was in essence 3 office visits I was told -- as others noted here -- to not say a word during these f...

Re: I Bonds Mega Thread (I Bond Heads Rejoice!)
Thanks Anon. I'm in a similar position to what you're describing. I had a 2 years worth of ibonds at 0 percent that I was planning on redeeming and using the proceeds to purchase the same amount in my gift box and doing the same for my wife. The thing is I have 3 years worth of ibonds in my giftbox right now and I was starting to question just how many years worth of i-bonds do I want to put this money in limbo. However, I wasn't planning on touching the another for another 10 years anyway at which point I was going to use it to fillin gaps in a TIPs ladder I was cobbing together for ages 57-80.

Re: I Bonds Mega Thread (I Bond Heads Rejoice!)
Anon -- if I might ask, how many years were you planning on putting in your giftbox? I was planning on doing the same this April but am debating how many years is reasonable. The current yield seems like a good deal to me, but on the other side there's some risk to freezing money long-term and I wonder if it's a legitimate concern that the treasury might switch up the rules. Right now I was considering 5 years.

Re: I-Bonds as Part of Bridge--Gift Box Now or Continue with Annual Purchases?
I was considering doing the same -- putting 50k both mine and my wife's giftbox -- but was trying to figure out if there were any gotchyas that I was missing. For example, I know that the treasury has fiddled with contribution limits in the past, which could drastically impact how many years it owuld take to roll funds out of the gift box. "December 3, 2007 The annual limitation on purchases of United States Savings Bonds will be set at $5,000 per Social Security Number, effective January 1, 2008. The limit applies separately to Series EE and Series I savings bonds, and separately to bonds issued in paper or electronic form. Euclid's Elements. What a cool book. It's been 40 years since high school so it's a little foggy (and I'm sure they went out of their way to make it as boring as possible) but I don't remember geometry as being so interesting. I'm pretty sure this is the equivallent of what video games were back than. I have 400-some propositions to go so I'm not sure I'll make it all the way to the end, which is my new goal, but so far it's fun.

Have 2 kid - 1 who just graduated from a flagship STATE school nd a 2nd who will be going in next fall. For the first one I orginally intended to fund 4 years tuition and 2 years of room/board (based on estimates from the top state school here). The timing was such that the market provided us with the ability to cover 100 percent tuituion and room and board per the univerities' numbers. However, while in highschool my daugther loaded up on ap classes and between that, scholarships, and taking heavy workloads she was able to knock out a double major in a record 3 years. In addition, she attended 3 semesters abroad, which counterintuitvely was actually less expensive than in the states. When the smoke cleared she graduated with almost 40k rem...

Jeffrey - actaully I did have quite a bit of money sloshing around in ibonds that I had planned on using after social security started...but now I'm thinking that I'll shift things around a bit and will instead load up on 2040 TIPs like you recommended. That would work. If I needed the money beforehand I could either use ibonds or sell early in the secondary market...and if not then I would have another tranche pushed out to 2040. I'm running fairly conservative estimates so we'll probalby be set during those years anyway. The trick is I'm trying to make this logical and user friendly for my wife when I die. It's starting to get complicated.

Re: Trading Treasuries (nominal and TIPS)
I have been cobbing together a TIPS ladder on the secondary market in that pays out every two years...but have run into a large black hole in the secondary market where no TIPs are available for years 2036/2037 (haven't gotten beyond 2037 yet). Since there are no TIPS available in these years, it looks like I will have to rethink my strategy. What have guys been doing for rungs in years? I see that nominals are around 4.5 percent. I know from here and on other threads that vanguard and fidelity offer TIP funds but have been shying away from those as my understanding is that if you draw at an inopportune time it could negate the protection you get from TIPs. Another option was a plain jane bond fund.

Taking 529 withdrawal in wrong year
My estimate, as well as the university estimate, of how much 4 years at a state school would cost was way off. My daughter recently graduated with two bachelor's degrees at almost half the expected cost. (This was largely because she managed to cram both degrees in in 3 years versus 4 and she studied 3 semesters abroad, which when all the smoke cleared saved a lot of money). The problem is we now have 35k sitting in her 529 account. There is a new law going into effect next year that allows you to roll unused 529 funds into a Roth fund up until the maximum contribution limit for that year, which I expect we'll be doing. Though I will have to do some calculations if we'd be better off just paying the 10 percent penalty versus having the mone...

When my duagther was in 4rth grade we did the Mighty 5 in Utah, and on the way out hit Great Sand Dunes in Colorado and on the way back Rocky Mountain National Park. I didn't think Great Sand Dunes was anything special (but a kid might have a different take on it) and we went back to Rocky Mountain a few years later but this time going in on the Estes side. The Estes side is great. I would definately recommend this iternary or something like it with a Natioanl Parks Pass. Some of these parks you could easily spend better than a week on (like zion or rocky mountain) but a day or a day and a half gives you a really good taste. With some of the other parks, however, an afternoon is more than sufficeint. There's just not much to see. For exampl...

Re: Is there a sort of easy way to decide when TIPS rates are worth backing the truck up on?
I had purchased 1ook of 10 year TIPS at the last auction through Fidelity. I was comfortable with this becasue I had read here and elsewhere that if you buy at auction and hold to maturity you can't loose out other than opportunity cost. But between auction and maturity the overall value of the TIPs can be bounce around quite a bit and so if you sold before maturity you could loose out. Not sure I understand the potential downsides to buying on the secondary market, assuming that I hold onto them to maturity. In that scenario, if you hold TIPS bought on the secondary mateket to maturity would it be virtually the same as buying them at auction in terms of safety, or could you wind up short when you cash them out at maturity? I'm not sure if ...

My first kid just graduated from college at an instate school. Orginally had planned on covering for 4 years of tuition and 2 years of room and board and figured she could fill in the rest with working during the summer. Did better than I thought we would in the market and wound up getting 100 percent of what all estimates of a 4 year degree would cost at that university. Turned out to be way off. She has 40k left over! This was becasue she stacked up a lot of ap classes in college and language classes. Her stats class was considered an advanced math class so it knocked off all math requirements. Between this and taking an agressive courseload she graduated in 3 years with 2 full degrees. We went to Glacier about 5 years ago, and held off our normal early june vacation until mid july due to the snow issues mentioned earlier.
Glacier is awesome, though I think to really appreciate it you have to do some of the rugged hikes. This isn't a park you can view from your car window in my opinion. They're not kidding about the bears. We ran into grizzly bears frequently - once on a trail with a sow and her cub that we chanced upon around a bend, which could have ended badly. If I'd do it again, I'd definitely invest in those bear bells. I think the danger is surprising them (like running into a sow and her cub around a bend with a sow).

Anil -- thanks. i'll have to keep my eyes open then as new information comes through. (We have two kids so there is a lot of moving parts where if nothing else I can transfer leftover funds from the first kid to the kid who is still in high school. The problem is a self-imposed one where I' feel strongly that I have to make it equal between the two kids and so I thought that a transfer might allow me to do that without adding any addtional mo ney to the pot.)
Anyway, my understanding at this point was you could do up to 35k over the course of several years so as not to go over the roth contribution limit for any given year. In additon, the account had to be opened 15 years and the money you're transferring had to be in the 529 for 5 years.

I was planning on purchasing 100k worth of new issue 10 year TIPs via an IRA at Fidelity. I've never invested in TIPs before so this is new to me.
A 10 year auction is reopening next week. So I could purchase this weekend...or wait until the scheduled 10 year TIP auction in July.
I wonder if the debt ceiling debate would have an impact on TIPs come July. Are there any schools of thought on this -- if an ongoing ceiling debate would drive up prices or is 10 years too far out to be effected.

I really like charely patton, so I had ceertainly heard of John Fahey before (he had written a book on patton and right before fahey died his company released a box set of patton's work) but I had never really listened to Fahey himself before.
My god is this guy awesome. So creative.

Re: best stand up comedy
George Carlin was a genius. No one comes remotely close in my book. His stuff is beyond comediy. He turned it into an artform.
Though I only like his later stuff from the 80s onward (with the exception of his last special which wasn't very good). His early material doesn't do much for me.

Re: Leaking chimney?
This is bringing back bad memories. Shortly after we moved into our house I discovered that the inside of the chimney had been leaking from the top and running down the inside to bottom for years. Wasn't an old house so it must've started leaking the day after it was built. The osb was rotted from top to bottom and we had to get the chimney stripped and rebuilt at the cost 0f 7,000 I think it was (which was 20 years ago). Haven't had any problems since it was rebuilt. I thought I read somewhere that chimneys are a notoriously weak part of a house.
So, it's great news that you saw it when you did!

Re: 2.5 days in Milwaukee
I would drive out to Holy Hill area in the kettle moraine just outside of Milwaukee. Should be beautiful out there at that time of year with the leaves.

Re: 2.5 days in Milwaukee
Would you be able to move it up a month and come in early oct? Nov in wisconsin can be questionable. You can catch a good weekend in nov..but I couldn't count on it. Oct, on the other hand, is a great time to be in wisconsin.

Re: What are you listening to now
Eddot89- That brussels shows is awesome! So good. I found the full album on youtube and had it on repeat the past few days.
Nicholas - yeah, I've been hyper-focused on the beggars to goathead soup era, which for years was the only stones music I was interested in, but I'm just now starting to expand to their other albums, like Some Girls. I'll have to add Satanic Majesties to the list.

I'll be sure to check out that stones concert tonight!
In addition to Let it Bleed and Beggars, I'd add Exile and most definitely Goat Head Soup to my list.

Re: Purchasing MYGAs (multi year guaranteed annuities) - mega thread
Thanks Stinky!
After checking out that thread, I called the Wisconsin Insurance Security Fund and spoke to them. 300,000 aggregate per person, but there were caveats ontop of caveats and then a few more caveats.
With that in mind, I'm leaning more toward nationwide.

Re: Purchasing MYGAs (multi year guaranteed annuities) - mega thread
Inspired by this thread, I am in the process of purchasing a 150k nationwide myga at 5 percent for 5 years. The sign up process has been going on for over a month now. The agent at nationwide had screwed up on the first contract and so we did it again and most recently they fed exed paperwork required by the company that currently holds the annuity that is getting transferred over to nationwide.
In the interim, there's been discussion here about a canvas annuity at 6.2 percent for 5 years, which I'm now thinking about. I see that canvas has a lower rating (B++ versus A+) and I'm trying to wrap my head around the cost/benefit of whether the 1.2 percent difference is worth it.

Re: Purchasing MYGAs (multi year guaranteed annuities) - mega thread
What should I be aware of in terms of fees associated with MYGAs? I know annuities are famous for high fees.
Right now I have 150k in a money market annuity over at fidelity earning 3.8. My understanding was that fidelity was probably as low you'd get in regards to fees. After reading this thread was considering a 5 percent Secure Growth 7 MYGA at Nationwide. But I wasn't seeing what the expenses would come to online...and even if I did I wouldn't trust that those would be the actual fees.

Re: [Debt ceiling discussion mega-thread]
But if the gov truly defaulted wouldn't any t-bills be at risk regardless of when they mature?
