Please share your experience on rollovers from TIAA-CREF to VG. Is liquation of TIAA-CREF annuities required? Really appreciate! I think the "annuity" term here is causing you unnecessary worry. This money ain't locked up. Here's my experience/advice on doing direct rollovers from T-C to VG. Assumptions: -no brokerage accounts are involved at either end, and -TIAA Traditional is not involved. Standard advice when rolling from A to B is to have B initiate the transaction. And chances are you could indeed do it all online at Vanguard and never have to speak to a CSR. But T-C is sufficiently quirky that I think it is more reliable and faster to start at T-C. They'll lookup the details of the contract, and in the best case, will alre...

Thank you all for great advice. Bob's not my name Great advice on paying kid’s tuition part. This advice will come handy when it is time to pay my daughter’s tuition next year. dbltrbl Our annuities are with TIAA-CREF, not Valic. They are in the CREF Bond Market and Inflation-Linked Bond Variable Annuities. Thank you. exigent Good advice on the Solo 401(k). My husband then has to have some side income. Maybe, consulting … It may make sense to wait and shield the annuities that way. We did notice that Form 8606 asks for year-end balance as the basis. Thank you. House Blend Thank you for the thoughtful response. We do expect our marginal tax rate to be lower in retirement. As a matter of fact, we are planning on having an early retirement if ...

Thank you for pointing out that I could still use the backdoor Roth even if my husband were to rollover his annuities. It was not apparent to me. But I guess I should know better.
Both my husband and I have contributed the max to our retirement plans at work. We also use FSA. We have a sizable amount of capital loss carryover from the 2008 crash, which should reduce our AGI by 3k per year for many years. What else can we do?
By the way, his current plan does not take rollovers from his previous plan.

Rollover dilemma: Rollover IRA vs. backdoor Roth
We are in our mid-30s. We did the backdoor Roth IRA thing in 2010 since our combined income disqualified us from contributing to Roth directly. And on top of that, we did not have other traditional IRAs or rollover IRAs. So the backdoor Roth thing made sense then. Here is the dilemma. My husband has some old annuities with TIAA-CREF from previous employment and we are debating if we should roll them over to Vanguard (Rollover IRA). The primary motivation for the rollover is that the investment options in TIAA-CREF are limited and their expenses ratios are 3-4 times higher than Vanguard’s equivalents. Currently, the total amount in those annuities is in mid-upper 5 figures, which represents about 10% of our total investable assets. The drawb...
