Re: Inherited IRA fiasco
It sounds like you commingled a traditional IRA with an inherited IRA. Is that correct? By closing the account, does that mean you took a distribution? Are 59 1/2 or older? I rolled over my deceased father’s Ira into an inherited Ira that I setup at Vanguard. Yes when I closed the account last week I took the full distribution. I am 64. Was the inherited IRA that you set up at Vanguard also in your father's name? AFAIK that's the only way a rollover from an IRA in your father's name should have been possible. Thrift Savings Plan (where the Ira was originally held) sent my a 1099 stating that the full amount is taxable. Also I have since been told that because the Ira was originally my dad’s then rolled over to my mom (also deceased) it can...

Re: Inherited IRA fiasco
Do you mean that 1) you rolled the original Inherited IRA into a new Inherited IRA at Vanguard or 2) you rolled the original Inherited IRA into an existing IRA in your name at Vanguard? I rolled over my deceased father’s Ira (which I initially thought was an eligible inherited Ira) into an inherited Ira (my account) at Vanguard. Of course now I have come to find out that it was not eligible be set upon as an inherited Ira. sorry for your loss. you don't say why the IRA of your deceased father is not eligible to be rolled into an inherited IRA for you and your sister (the beneficiaries). we don't understand why this would not be allowable. please provide the reason you are being told why you can't roll his IRA into your inherited IRA. Re: Inherited IRA fiasco
Sorry about the description of events. I inherited my deceased father’s Ira and rolled it over into my Vanguard account. I set it up as an inherited Ira (per my sister’s instructions). The payer of my father’s Ira sent me a check. I endorsed it and mailed it to Vanguard. That is how the inherited Ira was set up with Vanguard.

Inherited IRA fiasco
After my parents passed away my sister and I inherited an IRA. She is a CPA and was also the executor of the estate. She told me that I could rollover the inherited IRA to my Vanguard account which I did in July of 2023. She also told me the amount of the RMD to be taken by the end of 2023 which I also did. A couple of weeks ago I received a 1099-R from the payer of the IRA showing the full amount as taxable. Vanguard also issued a 1099 for the RMD. When I contacted my sister about this she informed me that the inherited IRA was actually not eligible for a rollover. Finding this out I closed the account I had set up with Vanguard. My question in all of this mess is will I now have to pay tax on this money twice. In other words pay tax on th...

IMO the biggest downside to Eldora is that they still have quite a few of the old and slow chairlifts. This means of course that you spend more time in the lift lines and when you board the chairs they come in fast which can be an issue for beginners.familythriftmd wrote: ↑Sat Nov 05, 2022 11:21 amReally? Yes this is very true and would probably be a good reason to pass on A Basin. Copper would be a fine choice as well as Winter Park. I would also pass on Loveland because it is located at the top of Loveland Pass it gets very strong winds.

Thanks for the link. It now makes sense. I appreciate the lesson.livesoft wrote: ↑Tue Apr 05, 2022 4:53 pm If VFWAX was your only international fund and your info from Vanguard states that all the foreign tax you paid came out of your VFWAX dividends, then you take the dollar amount of your VFWAX dividends and multiply by the number that Vanguard gives you for the percentage of VFWAX dividends that are foreign-source and NOT US-source.
Vanguard.com gives you that percentage in this document: https://personal.vanguard.com/pdf/FASFTCWS_R_012022.pdf
If you had multiple funds that paid foreign tax, then you have to combine (add!) the numbers up.

The prompt I’m getting is titled Now, tell us where you earned this income. And then there are 3 line items: country where you earned the income ( I entered RIC), income description (dividend) and gross U.S. taxable income from this country.
It was the third item I’m unsure about.

I am using H&R Block software to do my taxes. I’m assuming dividend income is considered passive. The program ask for the gross us taxable income amount. Would that number be the total amount of dividends paid for the year? In this case it’s VFWAX, FTSE US Index. Thanks

I have a job offer at these cities. (Married, no kids, wife works remote.) DENVER = more international community (I am an immigrant) + more mountains and outdoor activities + better direct flight ✈️ options - more expensive CINCINNATI = less expensive + at the middle of the country + ? Pros and cons of the job, team, compensation, benefits, etc. are very comparable. We make enough combined income to live comfortably at either place, but, all else being the same, we like to live at a cheaper city. My question is about overall quality of life at these cities. I have been in the Denver metro area for almost 40 years and have only passed through Cincinnati once. I would slightly disagree with your first item about Denver. While it is getting m...

Re: How does one "find" art?
+1. I have had very good luck with art festivals. They are typically in the spring, summer and fall. There’s usually a wide variety of art so it’s like visiting numerous galleries in one setting. The Denver metro area has a nice one in the Cherry Creek Art Festival. Another option would be to visit art hubs like Santa Fe or Sedona. Most big cities have art districts that are fun to visit as well.livesoft wrote: ↑Wed Jan 19, 2022 1:58 pm Art festivals, art shows. They are practically everywhere. One can even commission artwork, too. I typed into my web browser "local art festivals"

And then you become a Patron of the Arts where you buy new production from your favorite artists whether you need it or not.

I have had good success in buying art at local art festivals and shows. The Denver metro area has several good festivals in the summer and fall. The prices seem reasonable and there’s usually a nice range of prices and types of art all within several blocks. I was recently in Santa Fe and found most of the art to be similar and as expected quite expensive.

I listen to audio books when I ride my bicycle. I have bone conduction headphones that don't block my ears, so I can listen to the book and hear ambient noise at the same time. Same as if I was talking to someone next to me riding a bike. It isn't the same as reading the same book as I don't remember the details so well. But, I prefer it to daydreaming or humming the same 3 seconds of some song the entire ride. I also listen to audio books when I go on long drives, though I rarely do this. These days, the books are downloadable from the (fabulous) SF library. When it reopens, I'll go back to getting books on CDs and loading them onto my phone for later listening. If anyone is interested, I have maintained a list of audio books I've listene...

Both Durango and Steamboat have good public schools so you shouldn’t have issues there. But really you can’t go wrong with either town. Good luck with your decision.

CB is a harsh environment in winter. I have seen it where the snow was so deep it was up to the roof of single story houses and they had to haul snow from the roads as it was piled up 20' on either side of the road. Cost of living is expensive as for gas and groceries. Gunnisson does have a small university and hospital. It gets super cold though. -30f are not uncommon in the winter. If you want lower cost of living, warmer and more chain stores/food, Montrose is worth a look. Lots of good mountain bike trail systems there and in Ridgway. Also not far from the Lunch Loops in GJ or Fruita. Still close to multiple ski resorts like CB, Monarch, Telluride, and Powderhorn. Moving into a remote area can be a bit of culture shock. I think Durango would be a good choice if it fits your lifestyle. One thing that hasn’t been discussed is Durango’s many tourists. You would have to be okay with being around a fair number of tourists especially in the summer. The downtown streets get pretty clogged up but I’m sure the locals know how and when to avoid them. Of course since you have lots of tourists you have the benefit of many services. Some years ago I read that Durango was the most isolated city in the US with populations over 15000. They defined isolated as being furthest from an interstate. Most locals would view that as a positive.
