Re: Does anyone here with net worths north of $1 mil use financial advisors?

I have been a member of this Bogelheads site for years and eventually became my family's FA. I am pleased to see how able I was to answer their questions about investing, and where to go here to learn more. What I have learned and what I continue to learn from this site has been tremendously useful for the younger generations.

Re: Are Bogleheads still investing at Vanguard?

Yes I am. About two weeks ago I called for a Flagship representative to help with this year's RMD from which I would take five QCD. In less than a half hour she had the list and amounts for the QCD, tax percentage to be taken out of the RMD, name of the IRA mutual fund account from which RMD would be taken and where the balance would be deposited. In about a week, the QCD checks had been received here and I was able to pass them on to the charities as required. The entire process was very smooth and it was a pleasure to work with this knowledgeable representative.

I have many pack rats and small mice. inside and out. We use the hav-a-hart traps, available in hardware stores, selecting them according to size needed. You can bait them with peanut butter and leave them in the room where you have seen your pests until they are caught. It might not happen right away - be patient. Once caught, set again in case there are others coming in.

Re: RMDs – Best time to take during the year?

I take my RMD in late January or February from my tIRA with federal tax withdrawn and QCD donations made (the later are NOT precluded in January; I agree they are a very good tax benefit). Balance is put in my taxable account. I had excellent experience this year with the Vanguard assistants. As you may know, VG sends checks made out to the donor-specified charities to the donor who passes them on by mail. It may take some time to receive confirmations. This year no problems. But in case of a problem, I try to stay away from Vanguard during tax season or at the end of the year when they are most busy.

Yes, after learning about the newest IRS guidance notice 2020-51 at Morningstar, I rolled back my RMD amount from two of my individual account funds (using selected lots) at Vanguard to the same Traditional IRA account. The amount did not have to go into the same fund in that account. Vanguard required me to relist the amount to be rolled over as cash in my money market fund because they would only accept cash in the rollover. (It could also have gone into a bank account before the rollover). I worked on a call with the VG assistants who were very helpful selecting lots. All was completed in three days. The amount rolled over included what would have been the tax portion. But the QCD that had already been sent in January to the charities I ...

Thanks David for your note. Although as you say the muni fund does accrue daily, there is a payment (as a whole, as long as you haven't sold anything) that appears at the end of the month. As I don't sell shares of this muni fund unless for tax loss harvesting, I was thinking of the dividend payment that appears monthly on my account listing. Before the amount is listed, the NAV does decline slightly until after it is paid.

I don't understand why there should be a cost basis accounting problem with a transfer of funds from one account directly to another, particularly as 'specific identification' is listed under each of my taxable account funds. Please explain your understanding.

After over three months' attempt to have the lot switched to the qualified shares section, my representative and other personnel managed to have the cost basis people make the change. I'm still being told by Vanguard after three months that this year's RMD transfer balance from my IRA equity fund (after correct tax and QCDs) to the same equity fund in the taxable account can't be considered a covered shares lot because I didn't send it from the IRA fund to my taxable money market account, from which I could then transfer it to the fund where I wanted it invested. The lot has been placed in the non-covered shares section. What do Bogelheads think of this? When I don't anticipate any such payments, I return to reinvesting the monthly income payments. Over time, I have been able to tax-loss harvest twice from the fund (rotating between intermediate and short term tax-exempt). Tax-advantages and overall flexibility with regard to my shifting financial needs makes Vanguard Intermediate-Term Tax Exempt far more useful than my I-bonds and cds.
