Re: EXTREMELY frugal things from our parents and grandparents
I wouldn't say this was being frugal, but more security from living through the depression. My Grandparents were born in 1903 and 1912. They were starting out during the depression. After losing his garage and Hudson and Willy's dealership because of the war, he bought his first farm. As a kid there were two wall freezers always filled with food in addition to the normal food they kept on hand. During Easter we always got an Easter basket and on top was always a silver dollar. I never realized why until I was much older. I don't think they were trying tone frugal. I just think they always wanted to make sure their family were taken care of regardless of the situation at hand. Looking back, I consider them lucky to do as well as they had giv...

Re: Diminished value claim advice
It doesn’t matter because it’s wrong. Something is only worth what someone will pay for it. You may find someoen that will not care about the accident and pay full vale. Someone may not. You don't know until you sell it to find out. A diminished value claim, by its nature, is to reclaim your lost asset value as compensation due to someone else's fault. It is your choice whether you sell the car after receiving the compensation or if you drive it another 20 years. The goal of the appraisal (if necessary) is to have an unrelated party determine the change in worth for your vehicle. Just as you can be taxed on your property based on its value without selling the property, you can determine the DV without selling the vehicle. In fact you need ...

If you run the car until it dies there is no diminished value, as long the accident did not cause premature death. If you do not sell the car, you don't have any diminished value. I am wondering why would the quoted above matter? It doesn’t matter because it’s wrong. Something is only worth what someone will pay for it. I contacted her a day later to set up a time and said she bought something else. She was just using me to unsure she had a backup incase her first choice did not work out.

Quebec is great. I was there in May with my little one. It was cold then. We stayed at the Hotel Frontenac. Great place. Quebec is in the French area but English is spoken widely. I live not too far from there and have been many times as a kid also. It feels like you are in Europe.

You will have to pay sales tax and doc fee again when you buy out your lease. You will pay sales tax on the residual. In the end it is more expensive overall to lease a car and then buy it out.

Re: How to pay for upcoming medical / IVF expenses
Our situation was very similar to your situation. It was very hard for the both of us. We seemed to have had many failures before finally IVF working. It was about a 2-year process for us. I remember when it came to the last thing we tried it was $20,000 for one shot or $40,000 for guaranteed or after 6 attempts we would get a full refund. Up until that point we had already spent around $35,000 out of pocket. My wife only wanted to do the one shot because of expense. I knew if we did that we would only have one more attempt. I also did not want us to feel it was the end. I chose the $40,000 procedure. Of course, luck would have it we had a son with the first shot. I don't regret spending the extra money. I am in sales and I remember just li...

Since it has only been 4 months I would take it back to the dealer. I am not certain, but since it was a very short time since the repair the part should have its own warranty. Ask to speak with the service manager. I bet they will do something.

Re: How to value a truck for sale
The first question I would ask yourself is, Would you buy $950?
Based on the condition that you are stating you can basically throw out KBB trade-in or retail price for it. Do you know what is wrong with the idle? If it is an easy and inexpensive fix it should not hurt your chances. You may even want to fix it if it is cheap. INterior issues are not as hard to overcome as engine or transmission issues.
I would also look to see what others of similar shape, age and miles are selling for to get an idea. I would price a little bit below those numbers to move it.

I am starting to think about a new vacation to take. I like to go to places that are different. We first went to Iceland before it became a tourist nightmare. I am fortunate to have Icelandic friends and we have visited 5 times. It has definitely changed in the last 7 years. we also enjoyed Norway a lot. We seem to like Scandinavian countries.
I happened to come across information on the Faroe Islands when I was looking at the Channel Islands. The more I looked at the pictures it seems a very interesting place to visit. I was wondering if anyone has been there and if so what to expect.

Re: Lease buyout negotiation tips?
Unfortunately there is no negotiating a lease buyout. The dealer has nothing to do with it. They do not own the car, the finance company does. Buying out a lease in most cases costs more than if you originally just bought the car out right. In most cases a leased vehicles value is less than buyout value.

Re: Signed Car Lease, Dealer calls later asking for a CO-SIGNER despite excellent credit
Sorry for the delay in posting an update. I'm afraid it has been a rough week for us, as on top of all of this... the seller for the house we were buying backed out. Long story, but short version: our house hunt has been quite awful and we're a lot more bummed about that than the car! I want to *again* clarify the "combined income" thing because even though I've explained more, people must be skipping that part of the thread and honestly I did not believe that point alone would spark such debate. We NEVER, EVER implied that my husband's income was higher or misled ANYONE by trying to pass off our household income as his only. They *specifically* asked for our combined income, in addition to merely my husband's income, even after ...

Close BUT; I'd tell them you don't feel like doing that and for them to to bring a certified check for everything you have paid and when brought to you they may pick the car up at your residence at that time. FWIW, you have an executed contract signed and delivered in good faith . That party is over. Have you seen the contract? How can you know that? Some threads make me think there is more to the story and this is one of them. If they were supposed to be using only the husband's credit/income but included the wife's income, that is incorrect. The OP said "To clarify, since it has been asked: the dealer’s finance department based the loan on our combined household income". The dealer based it on this? How did they get the wife's ...

Not true. they are not approved for the loan/lease. if they do not return the vehicle it is theft. And yes the police can take action. All deals have a disclaimer stating that if financing is not secured then vehicle must be returned. Financing is not secured and the vehicle must be returned.wrongfunds wrote: ↑Sun May 06, 2018 8:30 am Because of the connection, I suspect you know for sure that the dealer has really nothing enforceable and is just using the intimidation tactics on OP. This makes no sense what so ever. The lender decides who is approved and who is not. Not the dealer. The dealer acts in good faith until final approval. think you missed the point where OP stated they used a combined income and then they had to rely on his income alone. I would suspect that he may have limited income, limited credit, limited time on the job and so on. When a credit application is not filled out correctly things change, which they did. Well, I am in the market for a vehicle lease. First time ever; I usually buy outright, but this is an EV. So are you stating essentially that I should not consider the deal done until the financing company has signed off? So then, should I not take delivery and not hand over title and keys to ...

If the dealership is going take title to a trade-in, lead the buyer into thinking they have a complete deal, give them the keys, and engage in other deceptive practices, the dealership should underwrite the lease or loan. In other words, the DEALERSHIP should be required to co-sign the lease/loan if they want to get paid. Appealing to the fine print to renege on the deal is unethical. But then when does anyone expect a car dealership to be ethical in their dealings? Or maybe the lender trusts the dealership less than even a borrower with a sub-standard credit history. Prepaying doesn't work. According to the lease company there is not a deal. Sometimes it is easy to blame the dealership. I do not think they are scaring you at all. The dealership wants the deal just as bad as you, if not more. It is tough to say exactly what happened. A 740 score is right on line between 2 different tiers. He may have been approved for a lower tier which increased the payment substantially.

There is a problem, and it is not the dealer. When you do paperwork on a vehicle you sign a spot disclaimer form stating that if, for whatever the reason, financing does not go through or the check bounces, the dealer can take the car back. This is a finance situation . It seems that you combined both your incomes but only he is on the lease. Unless you are on the deal you cannot use your income. I would bet that the bank looked at his income alone and his debt to income was not sufficient. Either he gets a cosigner or he returns the car. The values for 2018 vehicles are not out yet for KBB. Where I live there is no diminished value until you sell it. Then you can realize the loss. I guess if you were to run it into the ground you are not losing any value compared to when you trade it in and you lose trade in value due to a loss.

I do not believe that your situation is eligible for it. I once bid on a car and noticed it was built before there were rear seatbelts. I sent a message to the seller and explained. He understood and was fine. Luckily there were a few people bidding on it which within the last hour I was outbid and it didn't matter anyway.
So I guess I would contact the seller and explain. they may be ok with your reasoning.

Don't bother fixing it. Best case scenario is you get the full $650 back in trade in. Most likely the dealership has its own body shop and will fix it for less than what you will be able to and the loss in appraisal value will not be the full $650 in value.
