Most people advise a 529 plan, but I believe that a UGMA would be better for savings in today’s low interest environment. At 2 percent interest, the account would need to have $50 thousand in order to exceed the $1000 tax free interest reporting amount for a minor. In addition the UGMA may be used for any expenses incurred by the child, not only for college. Also the 529 has expenses/fees that exceed that of a UGMA account and is more difficult to transfer from one custodian to another.

When your Dad opens his taxable account, have him request deposit slips and prepaid envelopes. Upon receipt, grab a few for yourself.
To make a deposit to his account:
1. Write your check payable to "The Vanguard Group" (adding fund number).
2. Include his account number on the check. Date and Sign. No endorsement is required since it is directly payable to Vanguard.
3. Enclose in Vanguard envelope along with the completed deposit slip and mail

We are 100 percent invested in Life Strategy in all IRA accounts (Traditional and Roth). Although the E/R is slightly higher than the underlying individual funds, it is automatically rebalanced daily which is well worth the additional cost. The LS also seems better than Target Retirement because the allocation remains constant until specifically changed by the investor.

Over the years CU has focused more and more on social / environmental issues and less on product testing because proper product testing is expensive, since they must purchase the vehicles, appliances, etc. and perform scientific evaluations. Moorestown is great to live but has limited apartments and higher rents. Mount Laurel seems the best and is adjacent to Moorestown with a 10 minute commute. Lots of apartments at decent rates (for NJ), Shops, Restaurants, Rowan University. Other choices are Marlton, about 15 or 20 min away: Trendy shops, Restaurants. Medford, about 20 minutes away, more country atmosphere. Don’t live in Philadelphia: very high apartment rents, city wage tax even if you work in NJ, $4 or $5 toll each day to cross bridge, 30 minute commute to Moorestown. Also avoid Camden, NJ

Re: Which account should be more aggressive, Roth or traditional IRA

If you plan to keep the IRA for a very long term, 20 years or more before withdrawals, IMO a Roth should probably have more aggressive funds, since over the long term stocks have advanced. For shorter terms before withdrawals, the Traditional IRA should probably be more aggressive since the government will share, (usually 25 percent) of any losses. With a Roth you assume 100 percent of losses.

However this is just my opinion and hopefully others have researched this further.

YES, for Auto and Homeowners Insurance because it is not only annual cost but great service and claims handling that must be compared. Other firms may quote a lower cost but ding you with poor service, lower settlements and denials on claims.

YES for Checking, but NO on Savings and Credit Cards.

NO, definitely, on Investment Products because of high expenses. The only decent Mutual fund is the USAA S&P 500 Indexed Fund and even the expense ratio on that is 0.25 vs .05 percent at Vanguard. Others are way higher than comparable Vanguard Funds.

Not sure on Life Insurance or Annuities.

Re: Is Roth IRA superior to Traditional IRA if you cannot deduct tIRA on state taxes? (NJ)

NJ does not allow Traditional IRA deductions, as previously stated, but you are not taxed when receiving those distributions if retiring in NJ. The problem is that you need to keep track of all the contributions over the years so you can apportion the contributions from the interest, dividends, and capital gains which are taxed. It can be a paperwork nightmare. Also if you retire in another state with an income tax, IMO, you must pay tax on all distributions.

Contributing to a Roth IRA eliminates both problems.

Re: "The Retirement Revolution That Failed: Why the 401(k) Isn’t Working"

The problem is that most people prefer Instant Gratification in preference to sound Financial Planning.

With a Defined Benefit Plan, the company sets aside a portion of the employees’ cost for retirement. With a 401k Plan the employee receives that extra amount as part of his/her gross salary and has to decide whether to spend or save it. When given a choice most people will find a reason to spend that extra amount. Then when it is time to retire they blame the plan or someone else for having nothing saved.

You may want to consider a custodial account consisting of Life Strategy Growth Fund which has a 3K minimum, and maintains a constant balance of 80 percent in various equities. Income will be tax free (a tax return need not be filed), until it reaches $1000 and then is taxed at the child’s rate until reaching $2000. Index funds should only be considered when the account reaches substantial value since 3 types of index funds (Bond, US, and International) are needed and preferably admiral shares to obtain lowest cost. Target date funds are also good if the yearly trend toward a more conservative balance is what you are looking for.

I learned not to be as aggressive in my investments and to rebalance. I made the mistake of assuming that the market will continue to rise beyond 2008 after a decade of mediocre returns. However I also learned to make lemonade from the lemons in my IRA by taking the full RMD in 2009, plus an additional amount (RMD’s were suspended by Congress for that year), invested it in the same Vanguard funds in a taxable account. This had the effect of getting more shares out of the IRA without paying additional taxes. In retrospect converting to a Roth would have been better but at the time everyone was saying the financial situation would get worse. Signal boosters only increase the signal FROM the router to the client. They do nothing to increase the return signal from clients TO the router. Both are necessary for wireless communications. The output power for all devices is regulated by the FCC. The best way to increase range is to add a directional or high gain antenna to those routers that use external antennas because that will boost both the effective transmit and receive capability.

No reason to feel old or dumb. A USB cable "can" be used to connect directly to a modem, although a router would be better for security issues. Also a USB cable is used when connecting a computer to a wireless adapter which would then connect to a wireless router or gateway. Both of these would subsequently allow an internet connection.

But in almost all conventional connections a Cat 5E or Cat 6 Ethernet cable is used, with no USB cable involved

The response received from Vanguard concerning the difference in payers, including EIN’s, is as follows:
Vanguard Fiduciary Trust Company is the payer for the distribution from your retirement account. Life Strategy Moderate Growth Fund is the investment from which you took the distribution. If you are using Turbo Tax to import the data from your 1099-R, you should be able to manually change the payer information if you wish.
Summary: The hard copy is what the IRS matches although both records will be accepted.

I will likely upgrade the router to a more powerful one some day after the next standard is official. I just googled it and it looks like the wireless AC standard was approved in the last week. I see a router upgrade for me in the next year. For me the attraction of high speed wifi is not to stream from the internet, but to stream between several computers, for example, Blu-ray ISOs and SACD ISOs, stored on a file server. Also to backup those computers remotely. I have one HTPC wired, but the other HTPC is far away and using wireless N.
In order to stream at the super high AC speed, you will need to upgrade the client devices that you plan to stream as well as the router.
