Re: Help my niece choose a marketable college major
Just using my own experience, I really enjoyed the Psychology courses, as they overlapped with Management courses. By the time I finally graduated at the age of 27, I was taking a Bachelor's degree program in a non-traditional program for adults. I was required to document my experiences and competencies in the work force and write a paper based upon the experiences. It was a 70 or so page paper. That was the "Capstone course" for the adult degree. I had to concentrate on three areas or so. I chose Psychology, Business Communications and Business Management. Right after college I became a restaurant manager for 8.5 years and then found my niche as a teacher, in an alternative certification program. If I had it to do over again in...

Re: Help my niece choose a marketable college major
Some observations: 1. Vocational training is way underrated. 2. Colleges admit too many students in non-marketable majors because a sizeable portion of the student body does not have the aptitude or interest for hard sciences, engineering, etc. 3. There are far more students with liberal arts degrees than there are job openings for them in professional careers. 4. A liberal arts degree from a top ranked school (Ivy, etc) goes a lot further in the job market than similar degrees from other schools because a student at a top school has already proven they are smart (others' perception, not always true). A liberal arts major from a state school is a dime a dozen. 5. Start with a career and work backwards to a major. 6. The primary purpose of ...

Re: Should I move to a state with no income tax to save on taxes?
States with no income tax need to get revenue somehow, if those affect you the savings may not be as much as you think. Property, sales, gasoline taxes are common. If you’re renting and not commuting maybe it doesn’t impact you much. +1. This is worth thinking about. How do the states without state income tax pay for the things the other states spend their income tax on? Without a state income tax, they probably have higher property tax, sales tax, gas tax, taxes on utilities and phone service, toll roads, library patron fees to check out books…. Everything has to be paid for somehow or it won’t exist. No money to re-pave the road? OK, you get dirt paths. Not much spent on schools? OK, you’ll have mediocre schools with no enrichment and la...

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
The Banshees of Inisherin on HBO was very good. Excellent cast, especially Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. It's funny, sad, and beautiful, all at once. I would rate it as the best movie of the year. Highly recommended. I enjoyed it especially as a character study and being very scenic. I think older men may appreciate the theme of a guy just wanting to be left alone. There is a plot element having fingers being cut off, gruesome but not too bloody, artistically handled well (for what it is). I think women may have a hard time finding much in the film to appreciate, it lacks substantial romantic elements. Whoa, if this is the best film of the year, I've got to get my cognitive skills assessed. Really only found a few scenes funny or of c...

Hello Bogleheads, My mother, who recently became a green card holder, wants to move her savings to the US because of political and economical turmoil in her country of origin. Her day to day expenses are covered by a government pension. I was thinking about putting her money (about 70k) in a Vanguard fund like Wellesley, Life Strategy Income, or Target retirement Income, however she is adamant she doesn't want to invest in the stock market. She is very conservative and does not want to see her money go down in value. This money is her emergency fund. With the current poor performance of bond funds, what do you suggest? I am planning to get I-bonds, but the max she can get is 10k. Are t-bills a good idea? Do they also go down in value like ...
