Advising a friend
Let’s say someone is coming into some money from a lawsuit and wants to start investing, fund 529’s etc., but doesn’t know anything, and also trusts no one but one of his friends; however, that friend is not an FA. Here’s the wrinkle, he wants to offer either annual fees or a % of gains for the advice. How can this be arranged? Say Fidelity is used, then the other person manages the portfolio and any agreed fee paid separately? Any other suggestions?

529 vs gifting shares
Other than state tax deduction where applicable, what's the advantage of a 529 plan over just transferring appreciated shares (both invested in a similar index fund) to your child in college? If you gift, and that 18 year old is at an income level with 0% long term capital gains, the child can sell them and pay for education that way (up to $30K per couple/year?).

Move IRA to 401K for Age 55 rule
Can one roll an IRA into 401K and immediately take advantage of withdrawals at age 55?
“Age 55 Rule (Early withdrawal?). Starting in the year that you turn 55, you can make a withdrawal from your 401k without the 10% early withdrawal penalty. You will still owe income taxes for a pre-tax 401k withdrawal, just not 10% penalty. For IRAs, you would have to wait until age 59.5. Potential early retirees may value these 4.5 years of additional flexibility.”

Are you referring to the "no mutual fund share class" or something else specific to SPY?
SPY is a unit investment trust, and it must hold dividends in cash until they are paid out.

Yes a taxable account. So how can one assess if low er simpler choice vs calculating tax efficiency, is that possible? In taxable, the question would be whether the tax savings of ETFs (or VFIAX if one doesn't want to use ETFs) would exceed the savings from the lower cost of Fidelity or Schwab mutual funds.

Delaying match if an employee leaves? Sometimes that is accounted for by delaying match vesting. This type of matching is quite the norm. People responding above are being generous when they said this is "somewhat common", it's actually more like 80% of the plans operate similarly. They match on a per paycheck basis. The advantage to the company is that this forces incentivizes the employees to contribute at least 7% of their annual salary, and in turn, makes it easier for the plan to pass the ADP and ACP testing imposed on the 401k plans. Odd 401K Match
Have you ever heard of such a thing? Basically, the match one can receive is capped at 50% of 7% OF THAT PAYCHECK, basically penalizing you if you meet the annual limit too early, thus no incentive to contribute any more than 7 % per pay. And are these two excerpts the same? “When you contribute to the 401(k) Plan, the Employer will match 50% of the first 7% of your Annual Compensation that you contribute to the 401(k) Plan in the form of before-tax, Roth 401(k) or after-tax contributions. Matching contributions are made each payroll period.” “Receive Company matching contributions each pay period if you contribute on a before-tax, Roth, and/or after-tax basis. In my “MFJ high tax state” case, the new tax law resulted in a (slightly) lower federal tax liability for 2018 than the liability would have been under the old tax law. If the new tax laws had applied to 2017, this was also true. It was easy to analyze using Turbo Tax’s “what if” feature confirmed by my excel tax model. The AMT change offset the impact of no longer itemizing deductions which included very high large state and local taxes paid.

SALT benefits couples to remain unmarried
Isn’t the new deductions limit a reason for single couples to remain unmarried? Say both individuals have more than $10K in income tax. Is this essentially a $3000 question assuming the other partner would get an additional refund approximately in that amount? “The new tax law has largely eliminated the penalty, but it has introduced another penalty for married couples living in high income tax states — a limit on state and local tax deductions on tax returns, also known as SALT. SALT is now limited to $10,000 whether you are single or married. So, a married couple can deduct $10,000 versus two unmarried partners who can deduct $10,000 each. There are a few other tax benefits for unmarried couples with children. One partner may file as head...
