Re: Unintentional trading violation at Schwab due to pending dividend reinvestment

So basically they stop the re-investment of the dividend when you do this? They don't auto re-invest and then expect you to somehow make up the difference which would be selling in an IRA since you can't add money (if maxed out). I think the issue is they do NOT stop the reinvestment if you spend the cash that they (invisibly) "earmarked" for reinvestment. Basically, a) they deposit dividend as cash, b) the OP spent the cash, c) Schwab spent the cash on reinvestment shares, and then d) Schwab sent a letter notifying OP their cash balance was negative. The OP options are to deposit cash or sell shares to fix the issue. To your second point, yes if it's an IRA and unable to deposit the only way to fix is to sell shares. At minimum ...

Re: Unintentional trading violation at Schwab due to pending dividend reinvestment

Okay they didn't show your cash balance accurately.

They had booked a share purchase using that cash balance (reinvestment) but have chosen to not show you an accurate picture of your positions until the end of the next day?

It's their fault.

I don't think it's flipping hard to do reinvestment by depositing shares. Or, have the cash debit and credit and share purchase show up as separate line items on the same day.

NY Times article on alternatives, may be behind a paywall. Mint, the Budgeting App, Is Going Away. Here Are Some Alternatives A newspaper paywall and then essentially every option they list is... a paid service. Every little thing a subscription! Just interesting the business model changed to SaaS around the time Quicken matured. From 1985-2010 they could develop enough new features to sell some people on the new version every 2-3 years, until there weren't many new features, because they were basically finished. That's why I kept using the old Quicken, and also why free, open source software works fine. Just doesn't have any marketing budget. You all should look into Money Manager EX. https://moneymanagerex.org/ It's free and offline. Never heard of it but seems really interesting. Do you use it? How do you like it? It looks like they haven't pushed out an update in two years. Also never heard of it The last update was June 2023. At the end of the day Money Manager EX works, and better than spreadsheets. My use case: Checking/savings/credit accounts tracked manually, enjoy reviewing reports and graphs from time to time, but not using these tools for complexities (budgets, stock prices, or cost basis) TINSTAAFL approach, not trading financial data for free access to a tool, not storing passwords online Full accounting knowledge, not really afraid of learning new systems Former u...

No you can't use something, beat it up and then return it. This checks out even when you've paid for a bus company's luggage handlers to beat it up on your behalf.

The commodities market's a bunch of baloney for retail investors. You pay the price for years and years as "inflation protection" waiting for a couple where it puts up a decent return, but never makes it back to your original investment amount, let alone make up for all the lost stock market returns you have foregone.

Re: Commodities never belonged in your portfolio

People were saying roll yield was a pretty big part of commodity fund returns. They hold collateral in t-bills.

I think with ZIRP that would have evaporated pretty much.

There are also more complex concepts like backwardation vs contango. And with the inception of indexing there were narratives around front-running starting to cause problems. Some of the funds were poor at tracking the indices they are based upon, or likely to carry premiums to NAV borne out of thin trading volumes.

Personally I had some minor fun money in the space for a few years and enough fun. Lesson re-learned not to invest in something you do not completely understand.

Tablet preferred for reading books, magazines, internet, music, games - lighter and longer battery, more durable.

Re: Great fish sources And, Best fish for Hawaiian "poke" bowl, sashimi, etc.And great cooked fish?

Generally speaking wild Pacific seafood is better managed, healthier and more sustainable. Most of the hazardous or low-quality stuff is Atlantic, farmed and even marked "color-added" and "from frozen" at Kroger. I really would think twice before purchasing anything with Atlantic emblazoned on the package - know this seems like a big statement but it's reality.

I will buy frozen fish, such as Mahi-mahi or Alaskan Halibut, and defrost at home. Understand that most of this is frozen right onboard the vessel or at the dock. You can get ahi frozen, it's not bad.

Sardines are underrated.

Re: Can I reject a rental application for too many people on the lease?

Non- attorney here. Leases generally fall under "joint and several" liability which means that roommates, co-signers, etcetera are EACH responsible for ALL the rent.

To be honest, when I worked for a realty company we never had grown-ass roommates. Rent was cheaper then. We took college students with their parents co-signing. But we never "needed" to accept them because they almost always had no credit. Not bad credit, mind you, just no credit. We knew we'd always get the rent paid since there were so many responsible parties.

More remote work may be the new normal. However due to tax law and employment complexities, not every employer is willing to hire an employee from any state. They are registered where current employees live.

I believe there will be a persistent local bias in hiring decisions. I also believe there are more candidates for remote jobs, meaning you would need to stand out as an expert to get a job.

As always, Silicon Valley will be different. If you can work for one of those companies, advantage to you.

Nobody where I'm from flew anywhere for work or pleasure until about 1995. It just wasn't normal. We're back to that for now! It's not a homeostatic need of humans to travel by plane, and we have videoconferencing for work. We're all these little jet setters used to planes now. Future unknown. The business market is key to airline profitability because the REVPAR (yield) per seat is so much higher. When you get on a BA flight from London to NY, the profit turns to the left, the economy class ballast turns to the right. Half the revenue in the plane can turn to the left. Has CV-19 caused a permanent change in behaviour? 9-11 most certainly did not, neither did the Icelandic volcano (which shut down trans Atlantic air traffic for 7 days). Ne...

Re: Airline Stocks

A bankruptcy here and there is not to be compared with an entire industry going bankrupt. I don’t think that option is necessarily the optimal one. For example, the bailout of the auto industry is widely heralded as one of the success stories. If all the airlines go bankrupt, what does that do to Boeing? And then what does that do to all the companies that support Boeing? And the companies that support those companies? And then what about Airbus, etc.? Last we checked Boeing was covering up major defects in their latest planes and delaying the fix while airlines idled them. They are a critical defense contractor however. I figure that saves them. Airline companies have come and gone. USAir, PanAm, Continental and all the rest. Most lease t...

Yes, this is important to consider the actual date. The end of Q1 being 31st of March... not a tough concept, so many people miss out.

I think they were sellers in April not buyers. Meaning all the airlines were overvalued... after the big drop, in their opinions.

Re: Car Dealers not really wanting to make a deal

Barron's posted that used car prices have "cratered" citing something called the Mannheim Used Vehicle Index - which declined 11% from March, and is "down roughly 10% year over year". Pretty good support for those of us who feel it's a good time to buy used. Also, for every car you're guaranteed two transactions: the purchase and the sale. Each will be driven by supply and demand. Each will be annoying. It's the same for leasing, except they're putting ink to some estimates about the second transaction and padding two deals at once with profit and interest. Certain vehicles that have an excellent reputation and represent a good fit for many types of buyer - Rav4, Outback, etc - have a recent history of great resale price...

If you say reduce seating by 50%, I don't see the business surviving by increasing prices by 50%. People enjoy going out but prices do matter and if that $15, 20, 30 meal becomes $22, 30, 45 that would make eating home much more likely. If seating is reduced by 50%, prices would have to go up 100% to be revenue neutral. Duh. Thanks. As a math person, I feel even worse. Regardless, anything kind of major price increase would keep many people away. True per square foot? However they may only rehire half the staff they had before, and buy half the food. Commercial real estate companies take some rent as a percentage of sales, which is zero right now at the mall nearby. I do expect widespread vacancies in retail and restaurant spaces. Z...

If we had sufficient medical supplies, equipment and hospital beds, your comment would make more sense.
