Re: Advice / ?'s on incoming funds

toblerone- Thanks for the feedback. I think I understand now, I was a little confused because we have a 401K (my wife) and I wasn't sure if that would be included or not. But then I realized 401K is not considered a TIRA because it is funded with pre-tax dollars. So all in all if this is my only TIR...

Advice / ?'s on incoming funds

All, I would like some advice / feedback and also have a few questions on some money that I am expected to receive in the next few weeks. Just to give you a little background, I took a 401K from a previous employer that was converted to an IRA (due to severance package) and invested that into a comp...

Re: New Couple Looking for Portfolio Overview / Advice

All- I have been continuing my reading and research on this subject since I first posted last week. I have determined that I would like "our" AA to be either a 65/35 or 70/30. I am leaning towards 70/30 because we are still somewhat young and can be relatively risky when it comes to invest...

Re: Financial Adviser / Consultant ?

have you posted your portfolio here for feedback? That would be a free, no obligation place to start. Recent posters have had portfolio sizes in the $10,000 range all the way up to an implied $50,000,000 or more. At the least you'd know what to ask a professional when you finally do sit down with o...

Re: Financial Adviser / Consultant ?

If someone would like to offer some assistance on how to go about finding a professional to assist us that would be greatly appreciated as well. You can send me a personal message if you do not want to disclose info on the posting as well. I would be very leery of any recommendation for an adviser ...

Thanks for the response. Any idea if they are pretty decent about staying neutral and offering sound advice versus trying to sell you on their own products and services?

Financial Adviser / Consultant ?

Can anyone recommend an adviser or consultant to go over someones retirement portfolio? I was thinking it may be more beneficial to speak with someone more knowledgeable on the subject than myself. Any thoughts regarding this? If someone would like to offer some assistance on how to go about finding...

Re: New Couple Looking for Portfolio Overview / Advice

Re: New Couple Looking for Portfolio Overview / Advice

There is no 30% tax bracket. Not sure why you owe money if you both put 0 on your w-4, unless you have income outside your W-2s. Doesn't seem right. At a minimum you should have at least three major deductions on your return: Mortgage interest State Income Tax Real Estate Taxes Unless I'm just over...

Re: New Couple Looking for Portfolio Overview / Advice

A couple things stick out that you're doing that are making things more complicated than they should be. It looks like your trying to mimic your asset allocation percentages in your IRAs and you're doing that in both IRA accounts. That's unnecessary. Your Roths are one part of your retirement portf...

Re: New Couple Looking for Portfolio Overview / Advice

Some tips for getting more useful feedback: Drop everything to the right of the decimal when listing percentages. If something is less than half a percent of your portfolio, just omit it. Thanks for the heads up. I will follow that advice as I continue to answer questions or post more information. ...

Kevin- First off, thanks for your reply and I will preface my future statements in that we are novices at this entire tax / retirement / etc deal. After thoroughly reading what you have described, I am leaning towards calling our current firm (Merrill Lynch) and having them “recharacterize” our curr...

Assistance with MAGI / Roth IRA Contributions 2011 & 2012

All- My wife and I are in a predicament this year due to some miscalculation in regards to salaries / bonuses etc last year and contributing to a Roth IRA. We both started Roth IRA’s in May of 2011 and have continued to do so up until now. So that means we have each contributed about $3K for 2011, a...
