Re: Security Systems

I do personally know pretty well the founder of one of the largest "security system" companies in the nation who has now ventured into home automation, in his late 30's he happens to be one of the wealthiest individuals in the state of Utah. To say he is a shady businessman would be the u...

Re: Security Systems

Looks like everyone who has posted here has a positive thing to say about these systems. They seem to work as deterrence. Though in the past, I have heard some criticisms that they generate lot of false alarms, and 911/police at times don't give them priority. Also, if your insurance covers fire dam...

Security Systems

I wanted to touch upon the topic of security systems (CPI, ADT, etc. etc.) sold for houses/condos etc. Do we think they are really worth the money we spend on them annually? At least there is competition now, so the prices have reduced. Insurance also gives you the benefit in their pricing for home ...

Re: 2012 Roth investment [Contribution limits]

So technically you are saying if you phase out for Roth, you phase out for Spouse IRA as well... ?? The 17k I got by dividing 34k by 2. The earlier gentleman had 34k as total 401k deduction.. Though taxes are not based on logic, why they allow total 34k 401k deduction when spouse is working, and not...

Re: 2012 Roth investment [Contribution limits]

How do you open a Spouse IRA? I have an employer 401k, don't qualify for traditional IRA, and Roth IRA looks like is phased out unless I find other ways to reduce my income. This spouse IRA may be an opportunity. Where do you find the rules that say I can contribute to my wife's IRA (upto 17k) and t...

Re: 2013 coverdell limit

As I gather from these posts here, Coverdell is still in play in 2013 and beyond with no changes to Coverdell in term of qualified expenses (e.g. K-12) etc., and one family can contribute up to USD 2000 for one kid ? Am I right here? The thread is long, so I thought may be I should just sum up and c...

Investing in bonds

Wanted to know if it is a really good time to invest in bonds of any type (corporate/muni or govt).. Interest rates keep touching new lows every time you check them... So they can go only up from here if investment horizon is longer than a few years (2-3yrs). Even in this shorter horizon, I don't th...

Re: 2012 Roth investment [Contribution limits]

I meant deduction for the amount I contributed towards education. I will take a look at the links you mentioned. The reason I was splitting hair is because my 401k contribution did not add up to 34k as in your example. :( But as I know Personal contribution in a 401k can be maxed at 17.5k, so I am w...

Re: 2012 Roth investment [Contribution limits]

Thanks.. this helps. I looked around, and this was one I pasted to confirm. You are right, it was not exactly right. Thanks for correcting the error, and providing an example too. In this MAGI calculation, are 529 or eduction contributions deductible? Are there any other option to bring MAGI down fr...

2012 Roth investment [Contribution limits]

Hello, have a question related to Roth investing. I wanted to know if the limit given this year for "married filing jointly" as given below is based off 2012 income or 2011? This is what I found online. The reason I am asking is I am not able to get the 2012 estimate given all the income f...
