POV on Vanguard's Global Wellington Fund Admiral Shares (VGWAX)
The fund is ~one year old now. If you've been observing it or studying it, have you developed a POV yet? If yes, please share your thoughts. Thank you
For context ... My parents are entirely in Vanguard Wellington Fund Admiral Shares (VWENX) but were asking me about international exposure. To scratch the itch, we bought some (1% of portfolio value) Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund Investor Shares (VGTSX). If they see international as a good thing, VGWAX proves well managed, and the expense comes down, I could see switching 100% into it. I'm not looking for comment on this piece. It's just background.

Bath is neat. Also, good place to eat.chickadee wrote: ↑Thu Oct 11, 2018 3:13 pm When you leave Bath, see if your route can go through Castle Combe on your way to the Cotswolds. I personally would train straight from London to Bath and rent the car as you leave Bath (this is what we did) and drop it in Oxford and then take the handy bus from Oxford to Heathrow, and sleep near Heathrow the night before.

Re: Advice on Three-Night English Road Trip
Thanks for the feedback - I'm aware that the itinerary is a bit packed. We initially decided to split our time between Paris and London and have our hotels and Eurostar booked. My wife is both a museum hound (our time in both cities should satisfy her) and a devotee of murder mysteries. This latter interest led to her wanting to get out of London and see where, if British television is to be believed, all the bodies are turning up. The brief visit to Oxford is to see in person where those gorgeous scenes in Morse and Lewis were shot. Stonehenge, which is on the way to Glastonbury, won't be much more than a drive by and point. It was extremely disappointing when I visited 40 years ago, the perimeter was at least 50 yards out. I expect that ...

Re: Picking College and College Scholarships
Just to be clear, the OP or his son took on some debt for his son to attend Notre Dame? Because that's what it sounds like. I'm curious because the OP was SO adamantly opposed to any kind of debt at all for his son and was willing to spend $25k cash flow and $10k college savings. What happened? It would be nice to see a summary of how they are paying for Notre Dame. No ... no debt. The short answer is that we are cash flowing it. As noted above, we made a couple of adjustments (spouse working full time w/healthy income) and some luck (couple of promotions). Our improved circumstances allowed for three things: pay off the house, build a larger safety net (dual income and emergency fund), and send him to school debt free. On the helpful side...

Big fan of Bob. I've listened since high school (yes, always been a nerd). Overall, I found his advice sound. I never paid much attention to the market timing aspect.
In the past few years, I picked up podcasting and stopped listening to the radio (mostly).
I did catch the last show. It was very modest, almost too modest. Bob was mostly all business. He did get a little choked up at the very end.

For what it's worth, there seems to be a high correlation between the ACT and SAT. The SAT does have the subject tests (Physics, Math, etc.).

Re: Dilemma: Add room to current house or buy new house?
If you don't like the house, sell it and move.
If you like the house, want to stay, and are willing to live through some construction, I would invite a few architects to tour the house. If you hit it off with one or all, I'd suggest paying them to concept ("draw up") options that stay within the current footprint or offer modest bump outs.
It's shocking what a competent architect can do with existing space.
To find an architect, ask around. You could also Google "AIA **your location**". Check out their websites and see if any feel good to you (like a looking through a magazine).
Good luck.

We left our son at Notre Dame today, closing off this portion of the journey. The school has a really nice ~2 day program for parents and family, including a tour of the football stadium. It eases the transition for the parents, and leaves with you drinking the Notre Dame kool aid. We actually got there a bit early because he needed to be there early to test out of a few math classes. That went well so he'll be able to take a Computer Science class (intro type) and something related to music.

Starting off w/ seeing if there is someone in the family no longer uses their ipod. Thanks again! Haha. Old school. Respect! Locally here, you can borrow IPODs from the library. An option for you locally? IPODs are cheap these days. From your current situation, this will feel like the difference between riding your bike and driving a Tesla. You could probably find lower cost options. Another benefit, which my Dad liked was Facetime. I bought mine from Dick's (brick and mortar). But something like this might work.

To be clear, I don't have these! But they look fine and the price point is modest.
When I'm outside, I only keep in one ear bud. I tuck the other in my shirt. If I'm running, I use a clip to clip the other side to my shirt so it's not dangling or acting as an anchor. Not pretty ... but works.

Re: ACT test - got 34, try for 36?
It's ridiculous to think the difference between a 34, 35, or 36 matters. What matters more is high school grades and taking the strongest classes available, recommendation letters, what your application reveals about you, and to some degree, your activities outside of academics( sports, volunteering, etc. - but having a handful is just as good as having a long list - because a long list implies you simply have spread yourself very thin, and not committed much to anything). I'd say rather than spending the time prepping to try to up an ACT score, take a summer community college course and get a strong grade. The latter would be more impressive as it strongly demonstrates potential to succeed in college, plus commitment to academics, plus th...

On a personal note, my oldest is going into college this fall. He got a 36 (similar performance on SAT). I doubt his score was anymore helpful than a 34. In fact, his dream school was MIT. He did not get in. A friend of his got into MIT with a 32 or 33. While she was (per tests) a lower performer, she was more well rounded. For example, she had leadership positions (with real accomplishments) in several organizations. In corporate speak, my son would be the CIO or CFO. She'd be the CEO. But to take the contrary position, is MIT noted for churning out CEOs or rather CIO/CFO ? You see, majority of CEOs don't come with extremely strong technical background because they don't need to and can instead just *hire* the needed technical talent. Sil...

Stop the madness! We are going through this process right now as I’m writing this at a hotel near Clemson. Do your research on the schools your son/daughter is interested in attending. Each schools website will tell you if they super-score the SAT (most do), the ACT (most don’t) and typically what the mid 50th percentile scored on the SAT, the ACT, and their respective GPA. Some schools will tell you their typical score ranges to qualify for a scholarship. You also need to know how a school reviews the application. Some schools are number schools (SAT,ACT, GPA) and could care less about your extracurricular activities. Penn State is a perfect example of a numbers school. If you score within the range they are looking for, you have a GREAT ...

Living in Florida I was able to purchase 2 Florida Pre paid plans. This was a great investment. They now are both using the college plan. This is the only investment I made for their college. But it was cheap and backed by the state of Florida. I don't think I would of ever invested in a 529 when I was younger because I knew very little about investing. I know of a gentleman who lives in Florida and bought two of those pre-paid plans for his two children. But one of them decided not to attend, and he'll only get back the nominal dollars he put in (i.e. no interest). That's a pricey exit option. Also, I think to many parents over do the idea that if they don't have college savings for their kids then the kids will mount to nothing and the p...

Re: Pay for college with cash flow
Good topic. Good posts.
Our oldest is heading off to school this year. I have two more in the pipeline. We have some funds in 529 but we were not aggressive enough, not nearly. Overall, we are in good shape: retirement savings, emergency, house is paid off, etc.
We are mostly cash flowing college. We can cashflow without impacting most other things in our life: retirement, current lifestyle. My spouse and I both probably have more upside career wise (more $) so this situation should continue to improve. If this doesn't manifest, we will be fine too.
What I can't answer well is could we have saved more. For example, instead of paying off the house should we have saved more for college? Fair question.

That's Dr. Stanley's website. As noted, his daughter (soon to be coauthor) has been posting since 2015. Her posts echo his themes. She seem like a good writer. That's positive for the book.

That bench PR is from years ago and do not really do it much due to shoulder issues, but did just square 465 3x3 on Tuesday.

Re: New book based on Millionaire Next Door
Here is what I recall (various places on the internet). He was working on this with his daughter. It was pretty far along before he passed. She is finishing it up. She still blogs on his website. Her content is solid and echos Mr. Stanley's line of thinking well. So, I am kind of hopeful for this book.Odysseus wrote: ↑Mon Jul 16, 2018 7:28 am Thank you for sharing this. I really enjoyed these books...certainly the first two anyway.
I'm surprised to see this new title, as I believe that Mr. Stanley died a few years ago in a car accident. This leads me to question how good this new title will be, but I'll certainly check it out.

Re: Anyone not have a Budget?
We look at our monthly outflow about every 6 months. And adjust as needed ... based on sloppy spending/habits or something that we need to save for. A few years ago we tightened things up to pay off the house. More recently the focus has been on getting the right amount in retirement and funding college.

Since retiring and getting into the Chromebook, I have been working with Google Sheets. At first, I thought it was a watered down imitation of Excel. That was before I learned everything it can do:

Quite amazing, really.
My kids grew up on Google products, not Microsoft. They find my recent "discovery" and evangelizing comical.
