Thanks to all. @EnglishGirl, yes, I believe the score hit for applying is nearly always temporary. These things age out over time and so it's not a problem. Seems one does not want to apply for too many cards within a rolling 12 month period, generally.

Sold in sealed boxes. Cannot try in store. At least I've never seen functioning TracFones on display in any store.
