Wash D.C. speed camera - how accurate?

Hi, Anyone have any advice for getting a "speed camera" ticket reduced in the District of Columbia? My vehicle was photographed with a vehicle speed of 41 mph in a 30 mph zone. Thus there is a violation described as "11-15 OVR LMT". I'd admit to being over the 30 MPH limit, but I...

Re: Replace Bond allocation with 4% fixed?

Thanks for the reply FinancialDave. You see, part of the reason I could go 100% equities on the risk scale is that my pensions + SS already give me almost an 80% fixed income allocation, I am also expecting a pension. I have 17 years in a State Retirement Fund, which as of a report at 12/31/2011 was...

Re: Replace Bond allocation with 4% fixed?

Thanks for all the replies. 93% equity and you're worried about bond drama? Something doesn't add up. Perhaps the term "drama" was a poor choice of words. What "doesn't add up" is that I feel comfortable with a high equities allocation and maybe others don't. The main purpose of ...

Replace Bond allocation with 4% fixed?

Hi, I'm thinking of replacing my bond allocation with the 4% fixed account offered in my retirement plan. I've read lots about how interest rates can't go much lower and can't stay this low forever, so I'm considering sitting out the bond drama and grabbing 4%. Background: 15 years until retirement,...

Re: Going to a timeshare presentation - advice?

Most of the major Hotel chains now have what they call "Vacation Clubs". This is the new term for what used to be called Timeshares. I've attended a Vacation Club presentation in Orlando put on by a major hotel corporation. It took the full 3 hours. The salesperson had an ready answer for ...

Re: Selling non-retirement mutual funds to pay for Roth

Thanks for the thoughtful replies everyone. Good board we've got here.

My thinking is that by moving funds that are taxed (especially if I can tax harvest) then if they appreciate they will not be taxed.

Synergy - can you explain in more detail your tax harvesting plan? Thanks!

Selling non-retirement mutual funds to pay for Roth

Hi, I'm interested in some feedback about the concept of selling non-retirement mutual funds in order to fund Roth IRA contributions. Basic background info: mid-40's married couple, solidly middle-class, currently contributing 20% of gross pay to retirement; Both spouses max'd on job related retirem...

You are going to love the HOF. Great little town as well. Make sure you spend an afternoon in Skaneateles. About 1 hr from Ithaca. That time of year in CNY (Central New York) is very nice. Lots of apple picking choices. Oct 8th & 9th: Lafayette Apple Festival Niagara Falls - absolutely stay on t...

If you have the Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund, why do you need those other international funds?

I have been ramping up my international exposure.

The Vanguard fund is being used for Roths, the other funds are through my retirement plan at work.

OK, I stand corrected.

The 2 managed funds I was referring to, Templeton Growth & Hartford Inter Opportunities, both are up 2 - 3% YTD.

Sorry for the wild goose chase.

As a longtime lurker, so much for my first post to this board.....

Thanks for the replies.

Vanguard Total Inter Index Fund ONLY up .56% YTD; Why????

Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund ( VGTSX) is only up .56% YTD. My other managed international mutual funds are up around 10% or more YTD. It's Emerging Market exposure is almost 25%. I'm at a loss to explain why the performance isn't more impressive in 2010. Any ideas? TIA, SyrDave
