Also, not sure if mentioned by others, but learn how to retrieve the backed up data if you use software (as opposed to drag and drop). Then retrieve data periodically to be sure it is working correctly. Not everything just a document or two.

I only backup "my documents" and I do that on two different external hard drives and one usb stick. Always two different locations beside my computer hold current data. Of course that doesn't protect fire or theft but I'm comfortable with this.
